The growing popularity of smart phones, tablets, computers, laptops, mobile phones, and other such gadgets has both positive and negative effects. While it makes it easier to stay in touch with the people that matter to you it can also lead to several physical pains that result from prolonged use. The American Chiropractic Association reports that tens of thousands of Americans currently suffer from a debilitating condition called Text Neck. Americans send 4.1 billion text messages everyday which is why it comes as to no surprise that this physical complaint is getting more rampant each day.

What are the body parts that are affected with Text Neck?

Studies show that constant texting and typing causes inflammation of the tendons and wrist. There are even some cases wherein teenagers and young professionals, which is the demographic that sends text messages the most, are diagnosed with arthritis in the thumb.

In addition to the tendons and wrists other injuries that could come up from prolonged use of these gadgets are neck and back pains. Doctors and chiropractors have all agreed that this stems from poor posture. Users of these gadgets especially the cellular phones and tablets often hold these between their waist and shoulders so there is a tendency for him to look down and lower his head all the time. This causes strains on the neck and the back.

If you are one of those people who experience these symptoms then you should see a doctor right away. If these go untreated and if you will not correct your posture you will eventually develop more serious conditions like tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

How can massage therapy help ease the symptoms of Text Neck?

A massage is highly beneficial to anyone who is feeling some aches and pains on his back or neck. Years of studies has shown that a massage can help alleviate tension build up in your body and will help reduce stress. Having a massage will result to feelings of deep relaxation because it improves the circulation of blood flow in your body.

Technology will continue to bring forth a wave of new gadgets and gizmos that will make life easier and more convenient. Smart phones and tablets appeal to every demographic. With this in mind, understanding the potential threats and injuries these devices may cause us from over use is important and should be expressed to all who use them.

Continuing Your Education With Physical Therapy

The healthcare industry sets stringent standards for education, training and licensing for all its professionals including physical therapists obviously because the health, welfare and, ultimately, lives of their patients rests largely in their hands. One of the most important training standards is continuing education, which every physical therapist is well-advised to undergo for several reasons.

Why Undergo Continuing Education

There are several reasons for physical therapists, of which the most important are:

• The requirements for renewal of licenses among physical therapists include credits in continuing education, as mandated by state law. For example, Florida law requires licensed physical therapists to undergo education in various areas like clinical education, clinical management and clinical science for a certain number of hours.

• The courses are designed to assist licensed physical therapists stay abreast of the latest developments in their field. New techniques, tools and treatment methods can be learned from these courses.

• The maintenance of memberships in professional organizations (i.e., the American Physical Therapy Association) requires proof of continuing education even among long-time practitioners.

It is not just the physical therapist that benefit from continuing education - patients become the recipients of better services from their physical therapists, too.

Types of Continuing Education

The most common venue for continuing education courses are physical therapy schools including colleges and universities for obvious reasons. These venues are also the most convenient since the courses are offered the whole year-round, which cannot be said of other types. Physical therapists nowadays can choose between brick-and-mortar schools and online sites although the latter must be approached with great care particularly in their accreditation status.

Other venues for education are audio conferences, industry seminars, and professional workshops conducted by the likes of the APTA. Just make sure that these venues are accredited under state law so that the number of hours can be counted as a valid requirement for renewal of licenses.

It should be noted that the education can be stated either in contact hours or in education units (CEU). Providers of continuing education courses state the number of CEU while state licensing boards state their renewal requirements in contact hours. The difference between the two can mean renewal and non-renewal of licenses.

For example, most states have a ratio of 10 contact hours equal to 1 CEU. Keep in mind that an hour in one contact hour is not necessarily a full 60 minutes but it should be at least 50 minutes in duration. Thus, 1 CEU equals 1 contact hour while a.2 CEU equals 2 contact hours and so on and so forth.

Since each state registration board has different licensing requirements, it is best to ask the board before enrolling in continuing education classes. You want to ensure that you are complying with minimum requirements while also enhancing your knowledge of the latest advancements in your field.

The Benefits of Therapeutic Massage and Therapeutic Touch for Couples

In the spa in Redding where I have a massage studio, both men and women come into buy massages for their significant others. The intent of these gifts are wonderful. The significant others are always grateful. However, there are times in massage sessions where a client will say, "I wish my husband or wife could massage me the way you do". They say, "you have this way of connecting to my body that my partner does not". Those comments illustrate what is often times missing between many couples- a deeper, loving. physical connection.

Because they want that level of connection with each other, many couples are requesting that I teach them how to massage each other. There is a deeper message that is being communicated to me from couples, not just male and females couples either, all variation of couples. Women tend to receive massage more, so for their men I teach them that one of the greatest gifts they can give their woman is the magic of being a man who gives touch and massage with the intent of having her feel good, all without wanting sex afterwards. This intent can apply to any variation of couple. It's simply genuine intent and open heart space that people wish to feel, whether they are consciously aware of it or not. This is why professional massage feels so good. Many of us massage therapists have trained ourselves with that level of intention and presence. I teach clients that giving your partner loving, therapeutic touch is much less expensive(and more fun) than buying "things" like an expensive dinner or flowers, especially if funds are limited.

Lately, stress levels for so many are higher than ever. For couples though, during high stress times, the physical, intimate connection is what often times gets neglected first. Luckily now in society it is becoming widely accepted that therapeutic massage and touch are way to decrease stress levels. Loving, therapeutic touch can always be available between two people. The benefits of massage are infinite; physiological, emotional, and physical. In addition the boundless loving energy that can be exchanged between two people is amazing. Everything is linked. The mind/body are one, when you affect one area, you always affect the others. Here are just a few of the benefits of massage; A physiological benefit is that touch releases serotonin in the body, and serotonin is the "feel good" chemical. This connects right to the emotional benefit of touch, it feels good, it brings happiness. The physical benefit when the body is touched, is that muscles will relax, thus decreasing tightness. This decreases pain in the body. It's always a cyclical effect.

Clients will say to me I can't massage my partner because I don't have strong hands or my partner just doesn't know how to get to those tight spots. There are ways to train oneself so those problems do not affect the level of connection between a couple. The real goal is staying connected with the intent of love and presence, because energy goes where thoughts (intent) flows. You can have tiny hands and still give an excellent massage.

Like I mentioned above, nothing beats getting a high quality therapeutic massage. You get presence, experience, plus the breadth of knowledge of a professional massage therapist. All this, without having to give back. You lay on the massage table and drift off into dream land, trusting that the massage therapist will attune to you, your body and give you the love and focus you need. If you have a truly skilled massage therapist, then he or she will know the power of giving massage from an open heart. You can sense in anyone's touch what their intent is. The warmth of their heart will flow through their hands.

Imagine that you and your partner have all those qualities. It is possible. This is where intent comes into play. In your mind's eye imagine how wonderful it feels receiving loving, therapeutic touch from a trusted partner. You can still drift into dream land. Trust that your partner is giving to you because they want to make you feel good and you don't have to give back. Then practice giving touch to them the same way.

There are many skills and techniques one can learn to give excellent therapeutic touch for helping each other de-stress and relax. First though it really comes down to heart space with the ebb and flow of giving and receiving. Like I said, energy flows where intent goes. If you want to make your partner feel good, then your partner will feel good. This open heart space coupled with communication are keys for navigating the art of giving and receiving.

Especially during stressful times, staying lovingly connected is one of the most important things we can do for each other. This loving connection often replaces material things. Plus that abundant energy is returned to us in profound ways. Next time you are stressed, maybe just let that stress go. Focus with your partner on giving and receiving therapeutic touch. You might be surprised at how it can relax both of you.

Achieving Wellness Through Physical Therapy

In recent years, physical therapy has become a popular method of treatment for those suffering from a physical condition that limits their ability to function normally in their daily lives. Because more people are living longer and the fact that there have been many advancements in the field of medicine that have helped people survive such conditions as head trauma, strokes, neuromuscular or musculoskeletal dysfunctions, heart attacks, and many other physical injuries, physical therapy has become a key part of achieving optimum health and wellness.

A physical therapist is a licensed and trained therapist who assists patients with recovering from traumatic physical conditions causing debilitating physical limitations. This form of therapy involves a variety of physical rehabilitation techniques and the use of therapeutic medical devices. When a patient undergoes physical therapy, they will be involved in therapy techniques that will help strengthen and improve their range of motion, improve motor function, manage and reduce pain resulting from incapacitating conditions such as arthritis and osteoarthritis, improve muscle strength, use therapeutic devices to help with mobility or balance issues, and the development of in-clinic and at-home therapy programs.

Massage therapy devices in a clinic or at home can include using ultrasonic machines, EMS machines, weights, whirlpool baths, tread mills, TENS machine, and many other therapeutic exercise equipment. As well, physical therapists help patients correctly use such medical aids as braces, wheelchairs, artificial limbs, crutches, walking canes...etc. The objective of physical therapy treatments is to help a patient live comfortably and independently. A treatment plan is designed around the needs of the individual patient and the progress of the patient's recovery is constantly monitored, recorded, and adjusted so that he or she is able to recover safely and much quicker than if they had not participated in the therapy.

One can find massage therapy programs in a variety of areas such as orthopedics, professional sports facilities, geriatrics, cardiology, pediatrics, neurology, military hospitals, fitness centers, the school system, hospices, heath and wellness centers, the work place, and much more. People who suffer from a sports or exercise injuries will often use physical therapy as a means of recovery. As well, people who suffer from a slip and fall where they receive serious physical injury such as a broken bone, spinal cord injury, herniated discs, head injury, back injury, neck pain, torn ligaments, soft tissue injury, and muscle sprains, will often engage in physical therapy treatment. A patient may also need muscle strengthening before or after a surgical procedure. As well, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, osteoporosis, and spinal stenosis, are conditions that typically require physical therapy.

Because there has been an increase in the numbers of the aging population which is expected to continue, and more people are now becoming involved in gyms and fitness centers, as well as participating in extreme sports activities, physical therapy is now an indispensable part of the medical community. More people are now taking advantage of the benefits physical therapy provides as well as the safe and effective techniques used to help them improve their health and well being. If you are one of the millions of people suffering from a physical limitation, you may want to consider physical therapy as a method of achieving wellness.

Physical Therapy Schooling - How to Become a Physical Therapist (The Smart Way)

Physical therapists are healthcare professionals who are trained to apply various rehabilitation and exercise techniques for the treatment of abnormalities or injuries that cause the limited body movements of patients. A physical therapist works hand in hand with patients to reduce the pain from the injuries as well as to increase the patient's mobility. In short, physiotherapists help patients to prevent further physical injuries by means of healthy living and regular fitness routines. If you are planning to become a good physical therapist, you first need to find a good physical therapy school to get excellent training and instruction.

Step 1: Complete a Bachelor's Degree Program

As a preparation for admission to a graduate degree program, you must first obtain a bachelor's degree in any course. There are no specific degree courses being required as long as the course contains relevant math and science courses. The essential subjects you will need to take in your bachelor's degree course are physics, anatomy, chemistry and biology. It will also be a huge advantage if you could spend some hours as a volunteer at the physiotherapy department of clinics or hospitals. Most PT schools offering physiotherapy graduate degree programs require student applicants to have some first-hand training in this field.

Step 2: Get a Graduate Degree

It is a general requirement for all physical therapists to finish one of the physical therapy doctoral or master's degree programs accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association or APTA. Master's degree programs typically last for 2 and half years, whereas it takes three years to complete a doctoral degree program.

Step 3: Complete a Residency Program

After completing a graduate school program in an accredited physical therapist school, you will need to attend a residency program to prepare for your profession. As mandated by APTA, residency programs should include approximately 1500 hours of physiotherapy practice in a formal setting in 9 to 36 months. In these programs, residents work with the guidance of licensed physiotherapists. Residents are allowed to evaluate and diagnose patients while at the same time training in a specialty.

Step 4: Take the Physical Therapy Licensure Exam

A physical therapist can only practice his or her profession after obtaining a license. The requirements for licensing depend on which state you intend to practice. But in general, states require that candidates have graduate degrees from any accredited PT schools. Aspiring physiotherapists in the United States are required to pass the National Physical Therapy Examination or NPTA, which is administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.

Step 5: Consider Taking a Specialization

As a physical therapist, you will have an option to become a specialist in the field of physiotherapy. You can do this by getting a certification from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties or ABPTS. The most common specialties are neurology, geriatrics, orthopedics, and sports. All physiotherapists who wish to proceed to specialization must be licensed physical therapists already. It is also required that they have at least 2,000 hours of practice in whichever specialty they choose.
