Long Lasting Benefits Of Massage Therapy

If you've had a long day and you're feeling a little drained or fatigued, then maybe you could use a massage. A massage is basically the use of different types of touch, using firmly applied pressure on the tensed areas of body. It's also a very relaxing technique which requires the use of vigorous massage movements on the skin, including the underlying muscles and tissues to release soreness or pain.

Because a massage has a direct effect on the nerves, blood vessels and skin, as well as, other parts of the body, it's actually a good way to help reduce your stress levels and stimulate the release of built up toxins in the body. Massage therapy is also great to loosen up any stiff joints you may have.

The rewards of a good quality massage effects not only the body, but also your mind and spirit.

Some of the spiritual benefits of a massage include:

  • Experiencing a sense of balance, harmony or "oneness" in your life. And you may feel more at ease and content. You may also be a lot happier because you feel so good.

Some of the emotional benefits of a massage include:

  • Your self-confidence and self-esteem may improve. You'll probably be less stressed and full of tension or anxiety. Overall, you'll may have a greater sense of calmness and peace.

Some of the many bodily or physical benefits of massage therapy are:

  • You may experience better circulation, and a body that is free of stiffness in the joints and cramps in the muscles.

  • You'll probably have increased vitality and energy, and improve mobility and range of movement.

  • You may even begin to sleep better, lower your blood pressure, and improve the removal of toxins out of the body.

If you have any doubts about the positive factors of massage therapy, here are a few health concerns that massage therapy has been proven to be effective for:

  • Chronic aches and pains such as fibromyalgia, back pain, neck pain, muscle fatigue, foot pain, and a myriad of other bodily aches and pains.

Types of Massages

There are a variety of massages from A-Z. Some include, a deep-tissue massage which is used to apply heavy or intense finger pressure and careful movements on the stressed areas of the body. A deep-tissue massage is known to help release toxins out of the body.

You may want to speak with a professional massage therapist to get more detailed information about what type of massage would be best suited for you based on your individual needs and health concerns.

While getting a massage is good for anyone who is feeling extremely overwhelmed and stressed out, it's also important to note that there are times when seeking a massage is not the best option for you to help relieve your tension. And those times are as follows:

If you are seriously ill or debilitated from some disease getting a massage is not recommended for such critical or major health issues. Special concern must also be given to those who have diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, heart conditions, and many other serious illnesses and diseases.

All in all, if you're looking for a way to unwind after a hard day's work, or if you just want to do something good for yourself by treating yourself to a day at the spa, then consider getting a massage to relax and let everything go.

Lead Therapist Positions in Casino Massage

Casino Massage & Poker Massage Programs Require Dedicated Management Personnel

Within the Casino Massage or Poker Room Massage industry we see many companies employ the "Lead Massage Therapist" position as an economical yet flawed approach to manage daily operations. Not only is the lead therapist position one of ineffective and limited managerial supervision, but both continuity of gaming experience and operational consistency are lost all too frequently due to this position's turnover rate. Ultimately, this absence of proper supervision and control is the main source of poor customer service.

Managing the daily front-line operations of a casino massage company for over 4+ years, I have come to realize and understand the importance of a dedicated, impartial and equitable managerial staff to maintain the highest standards of customer service.

In this first article we explore one topic: Limitations of dual role, lead therapists supervising while also performing massages services. Additional related topics and points will follow in subsequent articles.

Although highly unlikely, for the purpose of this article let us assume that the lead massage therapist in question has the proven ability to lead, is a formally educated and seasoned manager, is well-versed in the finer points of conflict resolution, is completely familiar with any and all emergency procedures, and has acquired years of casino/gaming-industry specific expertise.

Even presuming the above list of impressive credentials to be accurate, we still have to ask, how much time can a lead therapist devote to supervising up to six others while also performing tableside massages for the majority of his or her own work shift? From my own experience, individual massages last anywhere from 20-40 minutes each on average and in extreme cases, therapists have been retained for the entire duration of the work shift. I have, on few occasions, monitored poker massages that have continued for more than 8 hours! Suppose that this particular massage therapist was indeed designated as the manager or as the "lead therapist". The managerial faculty during those 8 hours would effectively be reduced to zero.

While the above example is an infrequent but not unrealistic occurrence, consider an ordinary shift where the average time spent performing casino massage services consists of approximately 70% of the therapist's total time on duty. The remaining time is readily taken up by the working therapist's individual advertising efforts, records keeping, preparation for pending services, and regular breaks. Yet again, any managerial duties would suffer due to the lack of time allocated for such responsibilities.

The non-stop nature of gaming industry compels casino massage companies to operate virtually around the clock, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. The massage profession by its very nature is especially physically demanding and therefore most casino massage therapists are scheduled to work no more than 18-20 hours per week. During a 168 hour work week the number of lead therapists needed to cover all shifts would be nearly 10. Designating that many therapists as lead and then strategically scheduling them in order to cover the entire work week would surely prove to be an ineffective solution if not a nearly impossible plan.

It should also be noted that most lead therapists are commendably making every effort to maximize their earnings and therefore desire to stay as busy as possible performing casino massage services in order to do so. It's no surprise that these dual role employees are more concerned with actually performing casino massage rather than managing casino massage.

It seems a simple enough concept to understand; one cannot be tied up doing the job and be expected to supervise others at the same time. Casino massage therapists will be occupied with their job duties during most, if not all of their scheduled shifts. Furthermore, the working therapist will be confined to one small area while performing services and are not able to patrol and observe the vast sprawling span which is characteristic of the typical gaming floor.

Expanding upon this topic, we must now ask how well the lead therapist can fairly distribute the workload of customer requests for poker massage services in a timely fashion while he or she is occupied and unable to complete the chain of communication between the casino resort, the guests, and the other active massage therapists.

To give some insight as to the aforementioned chain of communication, requests for casino massage services on a busy gaming floor originate almost entirely at the guest level but are also frequently initiated by casino hosts. The request is most often communicated via telephone to the massage company's on-duty manager. Information relayed is generally comprised of the guest's personal preference for a particular therapist, the exact location within the casino for the service to be performed, the time desired for the service to commence, the number of therapists needed, and whether the service will require casino comp approval.

The lead therapist (who we have already established will be performing hands-on services 70% of the time) would not even be able to answer the request call, let alone be privy to the information needed to satisfactorily fulfill the request.

Back to our question; how well is the lead therapist equipped to deal with customer requests for casino massage services? The rather troubling answer to this question is that without any accurate situational awareness of where co-worker therapists are located within the casino, a running tally of the time remaining for each therapist's service currently being performed and the individual guest's preferences, the lead therapist will not be able to deal with customer requests very well at all. It should be obvious that in these situations, customer service levels are diminished to an all time low, and the guest will quickly associate this poor service with his or her overall gaming experience and with the property itself.

Given the above examples, it stands to reason that when the most simple and basic fundamentals and functions of management can't be accomplished through this "lead" position, it's safe to conclude that more complicated matters would be completely out of the scope of the lead massage therapist's managerial capacity. Such matters include the fair distribution of the work load, employee behavioral and disciplinary issues, customer complaints, employee conflicts, scheduling, absenteeism, emergency procedures, and all facets of player development/relations. One could also go so far as to conclude that as it relates to the casino massage industry, the lead therapist position is essentially the equivalent of having no managerial presence at all.

At this point one might ask why any poker massage/casino massage company would ever utilize the lead therapist position. The answer is simple, cost is the main factor. It's far more expensive to hire, train and employ a qualified managerial staff than it is to assign a current employee additional responsibilities. Most massage company owners realize the deficiencies, issues and conflicts associated with lead therapist positions and gamble that they will go largely unnoticed or at least unreported by casino executives, managers and casino staff who are already fully involved with their own daily tasks and duties. A better question to ask would be why any casino resort would contract with a massage company that solely employs these poor alternatives for legitimate management solutions.

Luckily, not all casino massage companies are the same. Some understand the importance of a dedicated, impartial and equitable managerial staff. They know that it's more expensive to recruit, train and retain the right people, but they realize that their reputation and customers are just that important. Few are committed to the highest standards of customer value, professionalism and ethics. Few confidently invest in experienced, quality management and staff, and are guided by an unwavering belief in the true meaning of World-Class service.

One of the many instances to illustrate the importance of dedicated managerial personnel happened when a woman playing Black Jack was overheard expressing to her dealer just how much "getting out" once a month on Friday night means to her. She sincerely confessed to him, "This is the highlight of my year. I work nearly 60 hours per week and don't have many friends in the area. Coming here for a drink and playing a few hands once a month is my little getaway. I thoroughly enjoy it!"

The empowered personnel (manager and massage therapist) made the perfect decision to politely offer a 20 minute of service free of charge. What better way to complete her overall experience than to offer a complimentary massage service? Pleasantly surprised she accepted and it goes without saying that she will not forget her gaming experience that night.

While this chance to delight the customer appears to have jumped out and presented itself, I believe it was only so clearly apparent because unlike the owners and lead therapists of many casino massage companies, this team of dedicated management personnel worked on the front-lines everyday and were accustomed to seeking and recognizing these types of opportunities.

It's only through time, experience and maintaining a constant presence on the front-lines that one can develop that 6th sense of "customer awareness". That is how to become truly in-tune with the energy of the casino resort and in-tune with its most valued resource: the resort's guests.

Will The Nintendo Wii Change Physical Therapy?

Many patients begin a painful physical therapy process following shoulder surgery. Following the invasive process of implanting bone anchors or the cutting and replacement of tendons the arm is further inhibited by weeks of immobilization caused by wearing a sling. Once the sling is removed, typically after two to six weeks, the arm is stiff, weak, and painful to move.

The physical therapy process starts with passive stretching to try to regain the range of motion the shoulder joint is capable of. Lack of movement has caused a buildup of scar tissue and a lack of sinovial fluid to "grease" the joint. Initial range of motion exercises are painful and take a great deal of effort. Range of motion returns slowly. Passive, or assisted, movement returns much quicker than active, or patient directed, motion.

After about four weeks the patient begins strengthening exercises. These are also tedious, painful and take a lot of time. The mental focus needed to perform these exercises leave the patient mentally and physically exhausted. The slow pace of recovery often takes its toll on the emotional health of the patient. Around week six or seven, many patients report to onset of mild depression. While sounding extreme, the pattern has repeated itself among members of sports medicine community web forums.

The majority of patients find out that real recovery, the gain of strength and flexibility, occur when the shoulder is used on a day to day basis to do real tasks. A return to exercise is difficult but the activity builds active range of motion very effectively.

The big question is, how can a patient build active range of motion and strength without the pain of physical torture? I mean therapy.

The answer may lie with modern video game systems, specifically the Nintendo Wii. The Wii uses motion sensitive controllers to control the characters in the game. Instead of sitting on the couch exercising the thumbs, as is the case with other systems, users of the Nintendo Wii are up and active. Simulating the movements needed to swing a tennis racquet or box with an opponent. The game gives the patient something other than the pain to focus on which in turn removes the mental anguish from physical therapy.

The Wii is starting to find a home in hospitals around the country. Herrin hospital in southern Illinois has started to use the video game system and reports that patients refocus their energies into beating the opponent instead of focusing on the pain. This pushes them further into rehab than they would normally. The patients often do much better.

Having spent time competing with friends to see who is the better boxer, I can say that my shoulders were heavily fatigued following play. Whether prolonged use will turn into stronger shoulders or not, I'm not sure. Play definitely got the blood flowing and the muscles working.

For liability purposes Nintendo does not market the Wii has a physical therapy device, although clearly the potential is there. It's only a matter of time before we see systems that use this technology geared primarily for physical therapy. I would not recommend that patients fresh from the sling start swinging virtual racquets and don virtual boxing gloves right away. It's clear that the potential is there for a faster recovery. Definitely talk to your doctor before starting any physical therapy and perhaps the Nintendo Wii is in your future.

Physical Therapy for Back, Shoulder and Knee Pain

Body pains especially neck, lower back, shoulder pain and knee pain are very common with more than 90% of all people experiencing such body aches at least once in their life time. Most structural related pains are associated with improper body posture such as excessive bending and seating postures that affect your neck and back.

There are diverse ways of treating structural aches including medication and in some extreme cases surgery. However, one of the more effective ways of dealing with these pains is physical therapy. Physical therapy entails both passive and active processes.

Passive Physical Therapy

Passive therapy, as opposed to active therapy are the processes that are done onto your body by a physiotherapy without involving exercising.

Massage

Deep tissue massaging is ideal for neck, back and shoulder pain relief as it applies sufficient pressure on tissues to relief pain and muscular tension. Massage is especially ideal for the simple conditions especially those associated with poor posture. However, to resolve the main cause of the condition, it is important to train the patient the right body postures to protect them from the re-occurrence of the conditions. If the pains are severe, massaging may not be ideal as it may cause further discomfort.

Heat Therapy

Heat therapy is very effective in treating aches since it helps relax muscles and allows for better blood circulation which in turn provides more oxygen and nutrients to the affected areas. Though heat therapy will not resolve the cause of the aches, it will help reduce it to manageable levels. Heat therapy is especially effective in resolving both back and shoulder pain.

Electric Muscle Therapy

Electric muscular therapy helps reduce muscular discomfort and body aches by reducing muscular tension. This therapy process also triggers the body to produce more endorphins that are used by the body to naturally relief pain. Electric therapy is mainly used for neck, hip and knee pain.

Hydro-therapy

Water is known to be a pain reliever and it simply helps muscles to relax as the water massages your body. Relaxing in a water bath helps in reducing structural discomfort especially back and shoulder pain. However, there are advanced hydro-therapy machines available with some physiotherapists to aid in relieving body aches.

Ultrasound

This is a physical therapy process that uses machine generated ultrasound waves to increase general body temperature and thereby allowing for better blood circulation. Improved blood circulation increases oxygen levels in the affected areas and therefore speeding the healing process.

Active Physical Therapy Treatment

Active therapy involves personal exercising of your body to relax muscles and improve blood circulation. These exercises may be used hand in hand with medication. However, in some more severe conditions, the victim may not be able to perform these exercises and therefore, other treatment processes may be used.

Abdomen Muscles Exercises

Abdominal muscles play a major part in maintaining body structure and stability. These muscles help support the back muscles that in turn help in supporting and protecting the spinal cord. Abdominal muscle exercise is therefore ideal for back and shoulder pain relief. These exercises include captain chair, bicycle maneuver, exercise ball crunch, vertical leg crunch and torso track exercise.

Muscle strengthening

Muscular strengthening exercises are exercises that work to build your muscular strength and thereby protecting your body structure from excessive strain and pressure in your daily chores. Furthermore, some structural pain conditions may be averted by the muscle strengthening processes.

Must-Do Marketing For Solo Estheticians and Massage Therapists

Whether you are a solo esthetician, stylist or massage therapist - going it on your own has its benefits and challenges. Without a retail location, you may feel that you are at a marketing disadvantage to salons or day spas. Little do you know, most of those day spas and retails paying a pretty penny for retail space are thinking YOU are a smart cookie--- because you have very little overhead and no employees. Just like most things in life, the grass is always greener on the other side. As for building your solo practice, here are must-do marketing actions to take to bring new clients.

1. Get a marketing plan. If you are a rabid Friends fan like me, you might remember the first season episode when Phoebe laments "Get a plan?! I don't even have a pluh." And while it may seem overwhelming to create one, it is can actually make your life easier once you have one. The beauty of a marketing plan is that you know what you are going to spend, do (and NOT do) for marketing month by month. If you don't know where to start, drop me a note or call me. With a few phone calls and emails, I'll get to know your goals, budget, background and help you craft a plan that will put you in control.

2. Set up a client contact system. This can be paper-based or using a client database on your computer. The goal here is to remind you to reach out to clients you have seen before. Some occasions to do this are:

*Two days post treatment to see if they have any questions. Inquire about how they feel about their skin (any flare-ups?), their neck/back/etc. that they mentioned prior to their massage or if they have any styling questions about their new cut.

*Birthdays. You may be the only person to send them a card!

*If you have seen them in six weeks - or whatever would be your recommended interval for the next service.

*Three weeks after purchasing a product - do they need more?

*Client anniversary thank you - every year they have been a client, send them a little thank you note. Hand written cards are so very special these days, but email greeting cards are just as effective as getting the point across that you appreciate their loyalty.

You can see that tracking client activities and creating a system to remind you of these things is essential.

3. Reward for referrals. Review my No Cost Referrals tips and create a system that works for you. Building your business by word of mouth is the most inexpensive marketing around...don't be afraid to be generous to clients you refer you. A $25 Starbucks card for one client can save you from a $800 newspaper ad that brings in the same number of new clients (you got...just one.) No need for a fancy points system...your business cards (yes you need 'em) will do the trick. Give your clients extras when they book an appointment and list on your cards: "I build my business through referrals and would be delighted to help your friends or relatives."

4. Leverage the Internet. Having a website is, in my humble opinion, absolutely critical for any business. Use lower cost hosted solutions like Inspirational Web Hosting or SpaBoom - businesses that understand yours and provide low cost and easy to use solutions. On your site, be sure to collect emails and allow instant gift certificate purchase. Online sales is a nice perk, but not for everyone because you have to then ship out products very quickly after receiving the online order. If you are in a treatment room all day, this might be cause a delay...just be careful to correctly set customer expectations.

While there are several more marketing activities I'd recommend like a professional logo, or printing a brochure, there are also things you should not waste money on. Avoid advertisements and direct mail. The cost will most certainly outweigh the benefit you'd receive as a single practitioner.

Be sure to track your marketing pennies well. It is important to be conscious about how much (and where) you are spending your marketing dollars so you can decide whether to continue or not.

How to Massage Migraine Headaches

Massage, a common method of relieving migraine headaches, can be done by a professional - or you can do it yourself using this technique.

A light massage combined with migraine pressure points will give you the greatest relief. You need only a few simple points about how to massage a migraine headache.

Migraine Pressure Point Defined

It is important to learn the migraine pressure point or points that bring relief. A migraine pressure point is a point on your body that, when pressed, will lessen the pain in your head. Surprisingly, a migraine pressure point is not necessarily the point that hurts most.

A migraine pressure point may be pressed and released in slow, rhythmical fashion, and deliberately massaged to gain relief. This will release congested energy and blood from the head and ease your pain.

Migraine Pressure Point Technique

You will be treating each migraine pressure point with these simple steps.

* Use only the pads of your thumbs or first two fingers - never the ends.

* Keep the pressure light to moderate, depending on how sensitive the point is to your touch.

* Press hard enough so you can feel hardness or tension under your thumb or fingers.

* If a migraine pressure point hurts so much that you can't take a deep breath, apply less pressure on that point.

* Let your fingers sink into the migraine pressure point as you apply pressure gradually. Feel your thumb or finger going gently, gradually deeper and deeper.

* While your thumb or finger is as deep as you want to go, massage the point with tiny, circular movements of your finger.

* Keep your thumb or finger on the migraine pressure point until you feel a movement or change there. It may feel softer or warmer.

* Now slowly, gradually release the migraine pressure point until your thumb or finger leaves the skin.

* Repeat several times at same point.

Migraine Pressure Point Locations

Remember to be firm, but gentle. Insufficient pressure on a migraine pressure point will not be effective - too much pressure will create tension in your surrounding muscles.

Here are a few migraine pressure point locations to get you started. Start with the first, and work your way through each point, consciously relaxing as you do so.

1. Migraine Pressure Point at Base of Skull

Locate the bony base of your skull in back. Place your thumb pads under the skull's base, each thumb about 1 inch from your spinal column. Holding your thumbs against the two points, tilt your head back slightly. Now press upward gradually, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions of the thumbs, still holding the pressure. When you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 again. Repeat 5 times.

2. Migraine Pressure Point at Mid-Forehead

This migraine pressure point is located at the middle of your forehead, right between your eyebrows. Using the migraine pressure point technique described above, and your thumbs or one of the first two fingers, press inward gradually, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 as you do so. Repeat 10 times.

3. Migraine Pressure Point at Eye Corners

Feel the face at the outer corners of your eyes. Move your fingers away from the eyes until you find the spots just behind the bone. Using the migraine pressure point technique and one or two finger pads, apply pressure gradually inward, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 as you do so. Repeat 10 times.

4. Migraine Pressure Point on Hand

Surprisingly, you have a migraine pressure point on each hand. It's the fleshy part between your thumb and index finger. Using the thumb pad and index finger of your opposite hand, gradually squeeze the upper portion of this migraine pressure point, counting to 10 and breathing deeply. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 as you do so. Repeat 10 times.

5. Migraine Pressure Point on Foot

The last point you will use to massage migraine headaches away is located on the top of each foot. Locate the place where the bones come together between your big toe and your second toe. With thumb or finger pads, press downward gradually, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 again. Repeat 10 times.

Different bodies respond differently to pressure points. These should work for you. If you want information on additional migraine pressure points, ask a local shiatsu professional. A professional will also be able to give you a complete treatment for relief or prevention of migraine headaches.

Mobile Massage Therapy - Massage Reduces Stress, Relaxes and Boosts Immunity

The accumulation of everyday stress

Working long hours at the computer can result in stress, muscle tension, injury or pain which can drain you physically, mentally or emotionally. This can impact negatively on your social life as well as on your work. As the most important benefit of massage is the reduction of stress, general health can be improved and maintained by massage therapy and the negative effects of stress can be alleviated or prevented. On an ongoing basis it can reduce pain, prevent injuries and maintain health. It is an important part of staying healthy physically and mentally as it relieves stress which is responsible for 90% of illness and pain.

Due to reflex effects through the autonomic nervous system, massage affects internal organs and areas removed from the area being treated. It promotes relaxation, reduces pain, boosts mood and mental clarity. Massage can be used for relaxation or stimulation and may be applied to rehabilitation after surgery, injury or poor health. It improves blood and lymph circulation, increases natural killer cells and lymphocytes which destroy cancer cells, boosts mood by increasing serotonin and dopamine and relieves pain by increasing pain killing endorphins. Massage can relax the body, decrease blood pressure and heart rate and reduce stress and depression. It may also provide symptomatic relief for acute and chronic conditions such as headache, facial pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis. It realigns and rejuvenates, restoring balance to body and being, so you can take in your stride whatever life throws your way. It promotes digestion, joint mobility, muscle relaxation, relief of spasms and cramps.

Bodywork as a medical treatment

Massage therapy is becoming increasingly sophisticated and effective as it moves into new areas such as medical massage which is the fastest growing modality of massage today. Training in massage therapy was an integral part of medical massage and nursing care up to the mid 1950s when it dropped to almost nothing due to the rapid development and almost exclusive use of technology in the twentieth century. Manual therapy was no longer seen as necessary for standard hospital care. Today, however, it is realized that massage in the hospital is necessary to provide a sense of wholeness and care which is absent in the increasing fragmentation of hospitalization due to the growing emphasis on specialization. Medical massage uses the traditional strokes of massage which are then specifically adapted to treat, for instance, cancer patients, hospital patients and pregnant women. Medical massage may be given in the hospital setting, an outpatient clinic or as a mobile therapy where the therapist travels to the patient's home to give the patient a personally tailored treatment protocol.

In massage therapy for the cancer patient, the therapist pays close attention to the side effects of the curative medical treatment to devise an appropriate protocol. Here the therapy is designed around the particular side effects the patient is experiencing such as pain, lymph-oedema, scarring, nausea, stress, tension, insomnia, fatigue, anger, depression and anxiety.

Thus cancer massage is a uniquely designed therapy which complements the curative medical treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Hence, it requires more extensive knowledge of medical procedures, pathology and side effects than ordinary therapy. Failure to understand this will result in harm to the patient as the therapist will not be able to adapt the therapy to design a competent treatment protocol.

In pregnancy massage the therapist must take into account mainly musculoskeletal issues caused by the weight of the growing uterus altering the centre of gravity of the woman's body. Treatment in this case will focus especially on upper and lower back pain, sacroiliac dysfunction as well as pubic symphysis and lower abdominal pain. The therapist must also be alert to and able to detect acute medical problems such as deep vein thrombosis and preeclampsia which are both potentially fatal if not medically treated.

Bodywork has a broad therapeutic application

The greatest benefit of massage is the reduction of stress and tension. Since a wide range of physical and psychological conditions stem from stress, massage can help alleviate these conditions and therefore has a broad therapeutic application. The most prominent benefit and use of massage is the alleviation of stress which then relieves muscular tension, promotes relaxation and treats lower back, neck and shoulder pain, pregnancy, bedsores, severe burns, iliotibial band syndrome and spinal cord injury as well as ameliorating systemic conditions such as cystic fibrosis, attention deficit disorder (ADD), fibromyalgia, asthma, autism, diabetes, bulimia, eczema, HIV, lymphoedema, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Sleep disorders, cancer-related fatigue, diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal cord injury, low back pain, lowered immunity, post-operative surgery, infertility, autism, eating disorders, age-related disorders and smoking cessation can all be treated by massage.

Bodywork, such as shiatsu and massage, offers a drug-free, non-invasive and person centred approach based on the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Bodywork in Pregnancy

The great physical, mental and emotional changes of pregnancy affect your lifestyle, your job and your relationships with friends and family. Massage helps you integrate these changes successfully. Massage therapy during pregnancy improves overall health, decreases stress and relieves muscles aches and pains. It addresses the many discomforts associated with the skeletal, muscular and circulation changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy.

Massage alleviates low back, hip and leg pain, oedema, nausea, heartburn and constipation. Regular massage decreases anxiety and lowers stress hormones during pregnancy. Labour is shorter and easier while babies are healthier. There are fewer obstetric and postnatal complications, such as premature birth and low birth weight.

Bodywork for Cancer Patients

Massage for cancer patients is a safe, non-pharmacological treatment without any side effects. It helps reduce anxiety, fatigue, depression, stress, tension, anger, insomnia and improve self-image and quality of life. Massage may reduce pain, muscle tension, nausea, constipation, lymphoedema and scarring.

Massage as a supportive care intervention for children with cancer helps reduce pain, anxiety, depression, constipation and high blood pressure. Massage also strengthens the function of the immune system and reduces nausea and depression during periods of immune suppression following chemotherapy.

Exercise The Negative Can't Into The Positive Must

You've no doubt heard of the expression, "Turning muscle into fat."

In this article, I'd like to explore the idea of exercising the negative can't into the positive must.

Just how easy is it to make excuses for why we can't exercise? Of course, it's too easy.

Falling back on excuses -- the "I can't because" meme is as easy as flopping on the sofa, remote in one hand, with the other hand free to dig into the bag of junk food of the day, or text our friends, tweet or whatever else people do with their phones these days.

Being a couch potato (or sofa yam as I like to say), takes little to no effort. Coming up with excuses for not physically moving your body are almost as easy as being a lazy boy.

Of this topic, making the "I can't" excuses, I am an expert. With the snap of my fingers, I can come up with myriad reasons why I can't do something I should do -- that I must do -- especially when it comes to exercise.

The thing is, I really enjoy exercising. I do. Once I get going, I totally love it. But before that happens, I have to overcome so many "can't" and "because" hurdles, I'm almost exhausted by the time I give in to my fat muscle "can't."

"I'm too tired" wins out every time, even though I know full well that after I exercise I actually feel better. I may be exhausted physically, but I feel better than I did when I was just tired.

Let's see, there's "it's too hot," "it's too cold," "it's too windy," "it's raining;" "I'm too busy," "I'll do it tomorrow for sure," "I don't feel well," "I don't have time."

Here's a good one that I used to use all the time when I was a full-time massage therapist: "I need to save my energy because I have a really busy week. My clients need me to be strong for them."

Does any of that sound familiar?

It's actually rather embarrassing to actually see those excuses on my computer screen. I actually had to stop myself from sharing even more of my excuses so I wouldn't start to cry. Okay, I'm exaggerating, though if I think about how good I've gotten at this "I can't because" excuse thing, I just might cry.

The point is, I have exercised my excuses -- my can'ts -- into a muscle-bound monster, while I allowed my commonsense and willpower to get weak and puny.

Can't is a limiting word, giving power to the weaker part of oneself. And yet, I have made an art of I can't when it comes to my own physical well-being.

How did this happen?

Prior to my training to become a massage therapist I was in fantastic shape. I worked out several times a week at a local health club, I danced at least twice a week and I worked out on my rebounder every day. My weight was good, and I was strong.

When I started massage school, after a whole day in school and working my business, I was exhausted. Little by little I stopped going to the gym because I was too tired or didn't have time. Then when I started massaging full-time, I thought the work would be physical enough that I could give up the health club. And then... I wanted to save my strength for my clients so I couldn't work out on work days.

Slowly but surely my can't muscles got stronger and my must muscles just withered away.

You might wonder why I choose the word must instead of want to or can, need to, ought to, or should.

Simply because those other words will never be strong enough to compete with can't. Even unexercised, can't is a powerhouse word. Want to, need to, ought to or should combined are not strong enough to overcome the might of can't. Must, however, when exercised to its full strength can absolutely crush can't.

It's a well-known fact that exercise keeps us young, healthy and trim. When I think of how important exercise is to my health and longevity, it's so much more important than want to, can, need to, ought to or should. I must exercise! Those words just don't cut it when we're talking about vitality and longevity.

If you're under thirty and you haven't even begun to think about your longevity yet, believe me when I tell you, the next twenty-five years come along a whole lot faster than the first twenty-five. Before you know it, you'll be wondering what your next twenty-five might be like. My mom is about to turn eighty next month. If you ask her, she'll tell you it seems like yesterday that she turned sixty.

I'm talking from experience here: don't wait until you're in the last third or half of your life to start considering your longevity. Everything's much more difficult. Losing weight, lifting weights, running, walking, riding (getting in and out of chairs, cars...) are all much more grueling and take more energy than when you're young, especially if you've ignored your physical well-being until middle-age.

Regular exercise promotes healthy weight via boosting your metabolism, increases your circulation, enhances your mood, strengthens and tones your muscles which in turn strengthen your bones, strengthens your heart and improves sleep, just to name a few of the most important benefits of exercise.

For me, it also boosts my creativity. It's actually quite amazing. My mind is always working, which can be annoyingly confusing sometimes, but when I'm working out in some way, whether it's hiking or walking, riding my bike, swimming, or rowing, I experience an incredible clarity of thought. Seemingly difficult problems are easily solved, sometimes in the course of a twenty minute workout.

When I think of the idea of exercising can't into must, I think of can't as fat and must as muscle. I know, I know, I just said can't is a muscle bound beast and must as is a weakling. Well, can't is both things.

Have you ever tried to lose ten pounds? Twenty? Thirty? Fifty? A hundred? If you have, you know that fat is a beast of its own. It's powerful, willful, stubborn and determined to exist against all odds. Fat is a determined survivor; and, coincidentally, so is can't. Can't is a bad ass muscle and a hundred extra pounds of useless and unhealthy excess weight at the same time.

So how do you exercise can't into must?

This is what I think:

  • When I want to say, I can't work out today because... I have too much work to do; I need to say instead, I must workout so I can get more work done. My mind will be clearer and I'll probably figure out how to solve some problems that have me stuck.

  • When I want to say, I can't hike today because... it's too hot; I need to say, I must move my body for my health so since it's too hot outside, I will row on my Water Rower instead.

  • When I want to say, I can't ride my bike today because... I'm too tired and the hills are too steep; I need to say, then I must at least walk the dog, so we can both move our bodies today.

I think the more you do it, the stronger must becomes and the weaker can't becomes. Just like exercise.

This came to me as I was walking, and I realized it only takes a little bit of work to rephrase my excuses into must dos. What a simple, but powerful idea!

As I explained before, I think it's so important for bodyworkers to pay attention to their own health and well-being, at least as much as they do their clients'.

I read something the other day that really resonated with me. It went something like this: In a year from now, don't wish you'd started working out today. It's not an exact quote, but that was what I took away from it.

Are you a good excuse maker? Is your can't a muscle bound beast? See if you can exercise can't into must in areas that of weakness that may be plaguing you.

You will finally get your license after going through the rigors of college when you pass the requirements set by your state. Some states will require you to pass through the National Physical Therapy Exam. Each state requires a different amount of clinical observing for those who wish to be licensed.

9 Key Questions For Finding a Hot Stones Massage Therapist

What do you as a customer want? Research shows that the formula is simpler than we might expect: low prices and good customer service. Price wars often cause a back-and-forth volleying between companies, about who can claim the lowest prices in town. So customer service typically becomes the key. We enjoy a tasty restaurant meal less, if we must wait an hour for it to be served. We lose trust in Laundromats that refuse to compensate us after ruining our favorite clothes, with huge bleach spots. And learning that the warranties for our electronics or appliances will not be honored, due to some fine print that requires a magnifying glass to read-can be devastating. Like other goods and services, how can we find the best prices and services for massages with hot stones?

Dollars and sense
As customers, we are typically satisfied when we feel that there is value in our purchases. From hamburgers to houses, if we feel that we got a "square deal," then the price is not an issue, per say. That said, we work hard to earn a living. Even if a good or service is a good deal, we may not have the cabbage, lettuce, cheese or dough (translation: money) to buy it.

How much should a massage with hot stones cost? It depends. Factors such as the location, demand, type of therapeutic massages offered, and a therapist's experience, can influence the cost. For example, prices tend to be lower in rural areas than in metropolitan ones. Also, day spas often offer more services (i.e. manicures, pedicures, facials, etc.), so their rates tend to be higher. You can also look for special deals for therapeutic massages. For example, some spas offer discounts for first-time customers, or for a package of massage sessions.

If you are satisfied with the massage, pay a little extra amount, or give the massage therapist a tip. I am a firm believer that competition breeds excellence, so I tip big if a therapeutic massage was relaxing.

Customer service is king
That brings us to the second important aspect of a massage with hot stones: customer service. The medical profession has recently been rediscovering and promoting an ancient form of stress-reduction: heat therapy. Massages such as those with hot rocks, have proven to reduce muscle tension, boost blood circulation, reduce heart rates, and improve one's overall moods.

Asking the right questions
When searching for an excellent therapist for a therapeutic massage, learn the answers to these questions:

o Which certifications do you have?

o How much have you been trained?

o How long have you been giving therapeutic massages?

o What types of massages do you specialize in?

o Do you have personal references?

o What types of products do you use, and can I buy them?

o How long is the massage session?

o Can I make appointments?

o Do you have discounts for referrals?

A "good" massage
You should consider several issues after receiving a therapeutic massage with a hot stone kit. For example, do you feel better? Also, were you satisfied with the therapist's personal techniques? Each therapist has his or her own "touch." Next, does your personality fit relatively well with the therapist? For instance, if you are a reserved person, you may feel uncomfortable with a therapist who is more talkative. Finally, did the therapist create a sense of trust? As with any other relationship, trust between the massage therapist and patient is vital.

"The customer is always right." We have heard that saying time and time again, but it still holds true. When searching for a therapist for a therapeutic hot stone massage, customer service and competitive prices are the keys to customer satisfaction. You work hard for the money, so you deserve to be treated rightly.

Massage Therapy Schools - To Get on Their Massage Courses, What Hurdles Do You Have to Overcome?

There are many career fields of massage therapy accessible nowadays and so training to be a massage therapist may possibly be a great move towards creating a stimulating and rewarding job. To get on any of the massage courses however, you have to look appealing to the massage therapy schools who (and it should not be a surprise) need to operate as a business; they need to find the best candidates to help safeguard their name and maximize their income through the fees from their various massage courses. Therefore the massage institutes set entrance requirements to help sort the "wheat from the chaff"; so what are some examples of these requirements?

It'll come as no big surprise to learn that all the massage therapy schools are different when it comes to their entrance requirements. To start with, the massage school will be searching for proof you have enough academic capability to absorb all the theory that accompanies massage therapist training e.g) subjects like anatomy, ethics, endocrinology, public health etc. A high school diploma is generally requested to get on massage courses and normally you must have accomplished results in human biology. Massage school entrance requirements are different should you just want to do additional specialist massage therapy training however.

Generally when a massage therapy school runs specialised massage courses in for example Indian Head Massage, you need to demonstrate you have already a certification in massage therapy. Why? Well the massage school will prefer not to have to cover all the basics too; you will be expected to know this already. However, just what should you do if you don't have the needed bare minimum prior academic background? Now just what should you do if you don't meet certain massage school's entrance requirements?

To begin with don't panic & give up. Its occasionally possible to essentially take a course along side your massage courses so you are catching up all the while. It'll involve some more work but the effort ought to be worth it in the long-run & saves you time as you are not finishing certain courses initially before getting onto a massage course. Talking to your favorite massage therapy school is certainly the way to go in the beginning. Now for other things you must know.

Additionally to proving ones academic ability, you will probably need to display you're well presented, with good communication skills, and the right personality. If you're shy and reserved, you might not be able to display to a customer an air of self-confidence to assure them they are in the right place and strike up a good relationship. Furthermore you will be required to prove you can meet the massage courses term rates; if this is a challenge then commonly you may get help with finance so just ask the massage therapy school.

The previously mentioned is not necessarily a total run down of what you require to satisfy in the way of entrance requirements to massage courses; as I have said all massage colleges are different. Do ones research early on so you can make all the correct moves to aid you get onto ones chosen massage course & into that completely new massage therapy profession you deserve.

Aromatherapy Massage Is Great in Relieving Stress

Aromatherapy massage is the art of combining a massage method with the use of scented herbs that are great in calming, energizing, and uplifting our body through our emotions. This is believed to have better positive effects on the patient rather than a plain massage therapy as the aromatherapy possesses many healing properties that boost the health recovery of the patient. Aromatherapy massage is common in Ancient China, Japan, India and Egypt as an old practice in soothing and healing people with emotion-related stress.

In our modern times, aromatherapy massage is considered as a mood controlling therapy with the use of essential oils that help our emotion. Modern massage therapists use many different scented candles during an aromatherapy massage to enlighten the mood of their patient and in return releases the bad energy gathered from their stressful day. Most spas also light scented candles all over the place to set a good mood for the whole place. These scented candles have different healing properties as well and are similar with essential oils in controlling the emotions of the patient.

Aside from using essential oils, the technique used for this type of therapeutic massage is similar to the other types of massage therapies which use massage strokes on different parts of the body to remove muscle tensions that result to body pains such as muscle cramps, spasms and sprains as well as a good anti-stress. These massage strokes help in providing an enhanced oxygen circulation as well as removing the formations of lactic and uric acids as well as other types of metabolic wastes that should be removed out of our system. During the massage therapy, the massage therapists will be using up to five different types of essential oils, all of which you have chosen for your own preference.

Knowing what healing properties these essential oils have is essential if you want to have an enjoyable aromatherapy massage as each herb has its own unique properties. They are all highly concentrated plant extracts that have been taken out from all parts of an herbal plant from its roots to its leaves. Unlike perfumes and colognes, these essential oils are 100% natural and taken only from herbal plants in the form of ointments.

Make a good preparation for your aromatherapy massage session and always remember that you never go on a massage therapy with a full stomach or after having a heavy meal. This is not advisable as it is unhealthy and is known to give discomfort to the patient during the massage therapy session.

Make sure that you are comfortable with your massage therapist so that you will have a relaxed and enjoyable session at the spa. You can always ask for a different massage therapist if you feel that you are uncomfortable with your therapist. This is why it is important that you do a careful research and track record check on your massage therapist before deciding on having one. Make sure that he or she is experienced and skilled in this type of job.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Treatment: Massage Therapy Can Boost Your Mood in the Depths of Winter

For some people, the arrival of winter means cozying up to the fireplace, enjoying snow sports, and the excitement of celebrating the holidays with family and friends. For others, it means the arrival of shorter, darker, colder days, and a mood that heads steadily south until the weather turns nice again months later. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects some 9% of residents in the northern United States, bringing symptoms of depression, stress, and decreased energy along with the change in the weather.

If the dark, short, cold days of winter have gotten you down, there's a surprisingly easy and effective solution: get a massage. Many people don't realize that massage therapy can be an effective treatment against the symptoms of SAD. While many people have heard of using antidepressants or phototherapy (bright light treatment), many aren't aware that massage can also foster positive outcomes in patients suffering from SAD.

Although it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact mechanisms by which massage therapies generate symptom relief, most clinicians believe that massage helps SAD in at least two ways: by targeting stress and creating a supportive, caring environment. Massage treatment can help reduce stress, one of the key components of SAD, by helping relax tightened muscles, regulate hormone imbalances by targeting the endocrine system, and increase the body's serotonin levels.

The time spent with your massage therapist also works to reduce stress and alleviate depression by allowing you to develop a relationship with that individual. This bond, even when strictly clinical, enables you to feel more supported and able to overcome the negative symptoms of SAD.

Working on at least these two levels, therapeutic massage can help you reduce the sadness and stress that may come along with shorter days, darker nights, and colder temperatures. Even for those not suffering from symptoms severe enough to be officially diagnosed with SAD, massage treatment can help keep you happy and healthy through the winter. If you're interested in learning more about how Swedish massage and other types of massage can help keep your mood and your body healthier this winter, contact your local massage center. Talk to a massage therapist about your SAD or SAD-like condition and ask them how massage treatment can specifically help you. They should be able to offer advice regarding particular massage styles as well as schedule your appointment for therapeutic massage.

So don't dread the arrival of winter this year. Combat those down feelings with a relaxing and healing massage therapy session!

Aroma Massage Therapy Benefits

Fast paced and stressful lifestyles strain the body and the mind, but despite this do not give the possibility to relax and unwind. You cannot remember the last time you took a day off, but your tired body and stressed mind call for a break. In this case, massage therapy is the perfect solution as it does not take up a huge amount of your time and it is also easily accessible as many beauty salons and spas have a wide selection of treatments to choose from. Some are more traditional - for example Swedish massage, others are rather unconventional like chocolate or honey massage.

However, do not be intimidated by the names of these techniques. They may sound rather luxurious, but in reality they are really suitable for all people despite their age, sex or body type. Commonly these treatments are preferred by female clients, but men are also welcome to try the techniques. Chocolate and honey massage therapy techniques have developed over time and have become fully accessible quite lately. They have their roots in the same massage techniques that originate from the ancient China and Japan, but in addition to applying pressure and carrying out movements, have a modern side also.

Still, one can doubt the usefulness of getting smeared with chocolate or honey. For some people this might even sound unpleasant - all the stickiness and sweetness. However, chocolate and honey are natural substances and they do not differ much from other essential oils used in massage sessions.

The Best Physical Therapy Programs

Physical therapy programs are meant to help you restore your quality of life by minimizing physical functional limitations or disabilities that may be due to injuries. Typically, physical therapy is a treatment meant to enhance the quality of movement by relieving pain and restoring and improving your fitness levels. At the end of it, a successful therapy will make it easier for you to perform better in your daily tasks and activities. When it comes to choosing physical treatment programs, there are numerous options. There are a number of such programs that are specifically meant to benefit those with injuries and other movement difficulties. As such, there are others whose use helps eliminate or reduce mobility loss before it occurs.

Bearing in mind that the physical therapy field is one of the most rewarding fields, you stand to gain a lot by taking physical treatment programs. For aspiring physical therapists, here is a guideline of what will be expected for you to become successful in your physical therapy programs:

- First, it is important to understand that depending on your state, the programs may vary. However, basically, you will be expected to have passed in a number of education classes that may include physics, psychology, chemistry and biology.

- Then, once you are accepted to undertake a program, you may be required to take various courses related to therapy. These may include laboratory instructions, medical related courses and even gain some experience in clinical therapy.

- At the end of your physical treatment program, you will be expected to take an examination whose results will determine your licensure or otherwise. At this point, you can then be allowed to take specialization courses in neurology, sports medicine or even pediatrics.

It should be noted before you become a certified physical therapist, the least qualifications is a master's degree in the field. Again, depending on your state, you may be required to continue your education for you to retain your license. The cost of programs vary ranging anything from $7800 to over $26000 for a masters degree and anything from $13000 for doctorate programs. However, with the use of the internet it is possible to get physical therapy education online at lower prices. Some online schools can even cost as low as $9000 for a doctorate degree. With the existence of various financial aid agencies, you will have no reason whatsoever not to get your desired physical therapy programs.

The Healthy Benefits of Amma Therapy

Amma is a type of massage therapy that uses a combination of various techniques to heal, improve and correct the medical conditions of an individual being. This technique is a wonderful addition to the many different types of massage therapy used all around the world. Swedish massage, chiropractic techniques, and other therapy techniques are used in order to improve the health and to prevent disease.

The history of amma therapy can be traced back as early as 5000 years ago when the legendary Yellow Emperor of China was still in command. This type of therapy was also used in the army of the great emperor. Due to its technique being based on the Taoism philosophy, most Chinese individuals embraced this form of therapy with arms wide open.

This therapy as with most oriental developed therapeutic massage uses the philosophy of addressing any type of medical conditions through the energy or life force within the human body. Practitioners of this therapy refer to qi as the balancer of good and bad mood and condition of the human body. It is believed that as qi is restrained to circulate freely within the body, sickness and disease will attack and bring down the immune system. Key areas in the client's body are targeted with the combined forms of hand therapies.

These hand techniques include friction, pressure, and touch that vary in strength. Specific techniques are used in each condition and problems which all aim in healing the body. The strengthening, boost in immunity and the prevention of disease are also included in the effects of amma therapy to the human body.

The client's body benefits from a variety of effects that the amma therapy provides after massage sessions. Here are some of the healthy benefits a client can expect to receive from this therapy:

• Relief from Body pain - neck, back, and shoulder pain are some of the body pain that amma therapy can relieve. Regular session of this therapy can also prevent acute and chronic pain.

• Better Sleeping Pattern - allows the body to relax and maintain a better condition which helps a lot in improving the sleeping pattern of the client.

• Relief from Stress - as the therapist works his or her hands on the different key point areas of the body, stress is released through toxins and the loosening of muscle tensions.

• Removes Anxiety and Depression - emotional problems are also addressed and corrected as the therapy also touches the nervous system of the patient during a massage therapy session.

• Improves and Corrects Circulatory Problems - blood and oxygen circulation are enhanced with each sessions, thus correcting blood pressure, respiration and other circulatory problems.

Risks and contradictions should be consulted with your doctor in case you are planning on having amma therapy as a part of your regular medical care. If your doctor is convinced and agrees with the effects and benefits of this therapy, finding a good massage spa and therapist should be the next best thing to do in order to attain best results.

Six Tips to Keeping School Grades Up - My Child's Serious Illness

Children who are going through medical procedures and dealing with chronic diseases want to be the same as their peers. That means doing what their peers are doing and going to school. Keeping your child's grades up is an important goal so that your child will not fall behind in school. It is devastating for a child to undergo a medical treatment and also to have to repeat a year in school.

1. To keep in touch with your child's school, talk with the school principal, secretary, teacher, counselor and any other professionals involved in your child's life. Let them know what is happening and how they can keep you in touch with school life. The more people that understand your situation and know how to help your child, the better it is for your kid.

2. At school you can have a primary contact person who understands the child's illness and is sensitive to his/her needs. Often the school nurse is the contact person but it can be any staff member.

3. The challenges that a child may face could be physical, cognitive, social, or academic. The support group that a child has is important to a child's success. The support group would include the school team, medical team, family and friends.

4. The school health plan is crucial as it describes the chronic illness or disability and lists medications given at school. It outlines medical procedures and describes accommodations that are needed for the success at school. The school health plan can be a 504 Plan or an IEP. The 504 is a civil rights statue that prohibits discrimination based upon disability. It is a written plan for students with disabilities requiring only reasonable accommodation. The 504 refers to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The IEP is a more legal document that sets out the duties and responsibilities of the school. Individual Education Program in a federal law IDEA 2004 which is Individual with Disabilities Educaton Improvement Act. It provides funding for special education.

5. The first step parents need to take is to request a Child Study Team Meeting to decide if the child is eligible for an educational plan. That is an IEP or 504 Plan. Have every conversation and discussion in writing so that you can document it later if necessary. Anyone who works with the child in the school setting along with the parent can be a part of the Child Study Team. Some parts of the country will call this team a different name ie., Student Success Team.

6. The Child Study Team or Student Success Team will decide if any of the following evaluations are needed-- medical, psychological, educational, social history, speech/language, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Accommodations can then be made that the child needs to succeed at school. Examples include the following

•Student excused from testing at P.E.
•Student allowed extra time for test taking or homework
•Student be given an extra set of books
•Student given bathroom, clinic or other passes as needed
•Student granted a rest period during the day
•Student assigned a buddy to help take notes or write if necessary.

Taking these steps will ensure that your child gets what they need in terms of help at school and this in turn increases the overall recovery.

Physiotherapy Jobs To Rehabilitate The Weak

Physiotherapists are commonly known as PTs or physical therapists. They are responsible for patients with injuries and body ailments. Their skills are mostly needed in hospitals, sports club, rehabilitation centers and nursing care home which mostly caters to geriatric patients. Before a person can be a certified as a PT, he must first graduate from a known and certified school that has an accredited program for physical therapy. Most colleges and universities have this as one of their course. The subjects that are tackled are pharmacology or the study of medicines, biology, anatomy and physiology and some classes in psychology. Once the student finishes the course, he has the option to further his study by enrolling for a master's degree which will take two years and after that another three years for a doctoral degree. His license and some of his requirements are managed by the regulatory board of the state. There are some states that will require a continuing education to maintain their license and their physiotherapy jobs.

A physiotherapist's job is to evaluate the physical condition of their patients and determine the cause of pain, type of injuries and the limited movement of their muscles. The condition of their patients can be assessed when they do a number of movements with their client's body to be able to know the problems that cause them discomfort and pain. Some problems that they may experience are caused by vehicular accidents, injury from sports and neurological and physiological conditions.

Physiotherapists are not only for rehabilitative care but should also learn to be attentive to their clients' needs by listening to them. This is a good way to practice good interpersonal skills when dealing with them and their family. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are also required when taking down notes on what you had observed from them and the care plan that you will apply. For a PT to do quality care, there are techniques and programs for treatment that he must review so he could apply it more accurately.

MASSAGE

Massage therapy is done to relax the joints, muscles and tissues. This is usually performed either before or after an exercise to enhance the circulation of blood and oxygen in the body. In a typical setting, the massage will only be done on the affected body part.

EXERCISE PROGRAMS

Every exercise for a client is designed specifically for them. This is based on their condition and the tests that are done to them. The aim for this is to lessen the pain and improve their mobility. The training that they will have to do is light cardio workout, some running and walking, bicycling and swimming. The exercises will be based on the asperity of their condition. If the patient will show improvement, their exercise routine will be modified to be more laborious.

PLAN

The treatment plan should last for a long time to ensure that no pain will be felt again and also to regain full body mobility. This will not only include cardio trainings and exercises that will be planned by a physiotherapist but also nutritional plans to ensure that the patient will remain to live healthy.

Massage Therapy - Healing Your Skin Through Massage Therapy

The largest organ in the human body is our skin. Scientifically, skin is known as the integumentary system. We don't generally pay a lot of attention to our skin, despite its size; but it is truly a phenomenal design. An average persons skin is about 1 to 2 square meters and weighs anywhere from 9 to 11 pounds. There are three layers of skin: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Massage therapy has its benefits for all three.

The outer layer of skin, which communicates directly with our environment, is the epidermis. The epidermis serves as a protective layer and aids in temperature regulation. Skin can be thick or thin, depending on where it is located. Human touch was proven to be of significant value during the war, when the mortality rate of infants receiving human touch was found to be much lower than that of infants deprived of human touch.

Going just beneath the surface we find the dermis, which is actually made up of two layers, the papillary and reticular layers. Immediately below the epidermis one finds a loosely woven mat of elastin and collagen fibers called the papillary layer. About 80% of skins thickness comes from the deep reticular layer, which is found directly beneath the papillary mat. The reticular layer is a dense layer of irregular connective tissue containing thick bundles of interlacing collagen fibers. Fibers run along many planes however most of the fibers are found running parallel to the skin's surface. The dermis' reticular layer is home to capillaries, nerve endings, touch receptors, glands, veins, arteries, and hair. Massage therapy, whether a special treat or a regular part of your life, is known to promote healthy gland activity, and aids the body in toxin removal.

The hypodermis (or superficial fascia) isn't really considered skin, but rather a subcutaneous layer of areolar and adipose tissues. Fibers extend from the dermis and anchor the skin to the hypodermis, which in turn adheres to underlying tissues and organs. The hypodermis is host to body fat and blood vessels. Generally, pressure sensitive nerve endings (pacinian corpuscles) are housed in the hypodermis, but they can sometimes be found in the reticular layer of the dermis as well. As a part of the normal aging process, the hypodermis looses some of it flexibility which can result in pain when moving. A massage therapist can manipulate the skin without the aid of tools or oil to find areas where the fascia has become inflexible or rigid. The sensitive fingers of a therapist applies pressure continuously to a region facilitating the release of the superficial fascia, thereby increasing flexibility and relieving pain.

Emotionally, massage therapy is recognized to help lessen stress, it has a positive impact on depression and anxiety, and normally creates a general state of well being for the recipient. No body system is an island onto itself. Rather it is part of a delicate balance of interactive systems responding to the world. The benefits of therapeutic massage are multiplied significantly when the olfactory system (sense of smell) is stimulated through the use of essential oils and aromatherapy, at the same time the integumentary system is stimulated through therapeutic massage.

Our bodies are a delicate balance of interactive systems reacting in harmony to the input of outside stimuli; so, we think is our globe. As you take part in massage, either through giving or receiving, remaining cognoscente of the Body, Mind, Spirit connection and the interdependence of all things, healing occurs on several levels.

Launching Your Career With a Kinesiology Degree Online

A kinesiology degree is a fantastic stepping stone to a wide variety of careers in sports, the medical field, therapy, and the exercise industry. A degree in kinesiology can help you find opportunities in a variety of other career paths to, including careers in the insurance industry, pharmaceutical sales, management, and corporate wellness administration. One of the fastest and easiest ways to get started is by pursuing a kinesiology degree online

An online kinesiology degree is not going to be any less vigorous and intense then if you attended classes on campus. You will discover the curriculum is very similar to what you will find on campus with the exception of many of the hands-on labs. Many colleges offering online kinesiology classes do have a requirement for minimal on-campus courses to complete your degree. Be careful in your evaluation of programs to determine if this will be the case and where the courses are offered.

What Classes are Included in Online Kinesiology Courses?

Before we get to specific classes, let us define Kinesiology a little more carefully.

Kinesiology is the study of anatomy, physiology, and the mechanics of body movements in humans. Technically the study can be extended to animals, but in most situations is limited to human study. A degree in Kinesiology prepares you for a career in exercise, fitness, sports, rehabilitation, and the health industry. The classes are focused around the study of the following areas:

Biomechanics

Exercise Physiology

Sport Physiology

Nutritional Science

Fitness Testing

Sports Psychology

In some University settings you will find a choice of concentrations, or specialties, within the Kinesiology department usually between these two options:

Exercise Science - Targeted towards individuals moving into health careers.

Fitness and Human Performance - Targeted to students wishing to pursue careers in the sports and exercise industries.

Now is the time to give you a list of a few of the actual class names you may experience while pursuing Kinesiology courses online. The classes could include:

Physiology of Exercise

Cardio-respiratory Exercise

Nutrition and Exercise

Therapeutic Exercise

Exercise and Mental Health

Body Image, Eating Disorders, and Obesity

Gender in Sports and Exercise

Since the study of Kinesiology is based upon a well-rounded Bachelor degree program you can expect the following types of courses also:

Public Speaking

Philosophy

General Psychology

Sports Psychology

Sociology

Biology

Anatomy and Physiology

Biochemistry

Information Technology

These lists of courses are far from complete but should give you a basic understanding of what to expect. A degree in Kinesiology opens so many doors because of the well-rounded curriculum which exposes you to the human condition both physically and psychologically.

Choosing a Direction for Your Kinesiology Degree Online

One of the biggest choices you will need to make very early is whether you intend to pursue your entire degree online, or use a combination of on-campus, remote campus, and online classes. By using a combination of classes your choices expand dramatically.

Many local Universities, private colleges, and community colleges provide a variety of classes online, but not their complete Kinesiology degree program. By choosing to take Kinesiology classes online which are conducive to home study and then attending a campus environment for lab based classes is ideal.

The combination allows you the independence and freedom of studying at home but does not deny you the opportunity for the hands-on experience which is critical in Kinesiology. This hands-on training becomes of even greater importance if you intend to pursue a career in Physical Therapy or another allied health career.

Check with your local universities and in-state colleges to see what opportunities they offer for off-campus study. You may be surprised to discover you can complete 50 to 75 percent of all your courses without ever stepping on the campus.

Finding an Online Kinesiology Degree without Stepping Out the Door

If your heart is set on doing your entire education without stepping a foot outside your front door your options will decrease. This is not just a decrease in your number of college choices to acquire your online degree. Kinesiology studies without hands-on experience could dramatically decrease your opportunities in moving forward into post-graduate studies in Radiology, Physical Therapy, or Medical School. All of these advanced degrees require a very hands-on approach. When you have missed out completely on the physical experience it could deter these colleges and universities from accepting credits or even completely denying admission.

With that warning out of the way, your options for your Kinesiology degree online can be acquired from several very reputable schools including:

Ashford University

Walden University

ASU Online

American Military University

One thing to be aware of as you explore colleges. Their degrees for Kinesiology are often masked under other titles like Health Sciences or Exercise Sciences. You may need to contact the universities directly to determine the proper courses.

Extending Your Existing Bachelors Degree into a Masters Degree in Kinesiology

There are other options for acquiring a Kinesiology degree online if you already have an existing Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. There are several universities offering an opportunity to earn your Masters degree in Kinesiology with online studies. These schools include:

Fresno Pacific University - A 17-Month Program

University of Wyoming - Requires 3 courses, 12 hours of electives, and a research paper.

University of Texas - Requires a comprehensive exam or thesis at the conclusion of the course.

(Note: The University of Texas program is offered by outreach institutions at Permian Basin, Tyler, Pan American, and El Paso campuses.)

The Final Analysis

The only negative to this path is as has been discussed. It can lead to reduced opportunity for graduate studies and does not give you the hands-on experience desperately needed in Kinesiology careers. In the final analysis pursuing a Kinesiology degree online can reduce your time in classes, speed graduation, and reduce cost.

Stone Massage Therapy

The benefits of stone massage therapy.

Most stone massage therapy has many benefits. In the past few years, it has grown rapidly in popularity. Both hot and cold stone techniques have their own benefits.

The benefits of hot stone massage

Hot stone massage is not only a relaxing massage method, but it also has many healing properties. The use of hot stones allows a therapist to give a deep, penetrating massage without putting excessive stress on his or her own body. Additionally, the stones will heat the skin, open the pores, and prepare one's skin to better absorb massage oils. They, therefore, increase the benefits any given oil will provide.  The use of massage stones is also a great way to increase circulation in and around the area being massaged. Increased blood flow will help clear out toxins and assist in healing an injured or strained area.

The benefits of cold stone massage

Cold stones are excellent because they promote circulation and act as a powerful decongestant for the body. By promoting circulation, a cold stone treatment can ease inflamed tissues, decrease muscle spasms, and can reduce swelling or fluid build-up (for example, as manifested in dark circles under the eyes). Unlike with the use of ice, cold stone treatments will not severely desensitize the skin. The overall effect of a treatment is the reduction of tension with a simultaneous feeling of invigoration.

Using both techniques in one routine can be very beneficial to your partner assuming that you give them stone massage therapy. Switching between cold and hot applications causes blood vessels to alternately dilate and constrict, leading to increased movement of fluids within the body, increased removal of toxins and increased healing. However, this type of treatment is not recommended for people with circulatory problems because they may be too sensitive to the sudden, increased circulation.

Choosing stone for massage therapy

Many different types of stones can be used for stone massage but there are a few that are generally favored across the massage industry. You may a stone set where all the stones are shaped to be specific sizes and shapes. Having a set like this can make it easier to add precision and develop a routine. However, naturally shaped stones may be preferred by some people because it creates a more natural look and feel.

Hot stone massage: Basalt stones

Basalt is the ideal material for hot stone massage. The composition of this volcanic rock (high silica and iron content) makes it hold heat longer than most stones. Using a different type of stone may mean that you have to switch stones in and out of the warmer quite often or they will become too cool for treatment.

Some people think that basalt stones should be a deep black color. The color does not necessarily determine how well the massage stones can hold heat. Most basalt stones are actually gray when dry, but they normally turn black when using with oil. Trace elements influence the color of a stone, but as long as the stone has high silica and iron content, it will retain heat well. There may be some other variation in the color of our stones but they are all excellent at retaining heat.

Cold stone massage: Marble stones

Marble stones are considered the best option for cold stone therapy. The reason that basalt is good for hot stone therapy is that you can massage a person's body for a long time before they cool. Basalt is also acceptable for cold stone therapy but not as good as marble. Marble stones have proven to be the best at retaining coolness. They do not heat up rapidly during a massage and can draw heat from the body.

Why Are There Different Styles Of Thai Massage?

There is Thai Massage. But this by itself is not sufficient to clarify what we are talking about. It is somewhat like saying "There is Christianity". Well - are you talking about Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Born Agains... It is similar with Thai Massage. There is a northern style, a southern style, a royal style, the strictly traditional style and a whole number of styles that have been mixed with other Asian healing arts or with yoga therapy or energy work.

Why are there so many different Thai Massage styles? Why not just one? There is the saying "variety is the spice of life", and this is very true. Imagine if there was only one car, or one mobile phone - wouldn't you agree that it is much more fun if you have many choices? Just like you can match a car to your preferences, so can you match a massage style to your body and your likes.

Some people like strong massage, some soft, some like stretching, some prefer oil massage, and some love rocking massage. And then some people love foot work, some love abdominal work, others love head massage. I think I made my case why it is an advantage to have many massage styles and variations.

Here is another good reason. Once a therapist becomes seasoned and experienced, he or she does not want to just follow the routine which they learned in massage school. Massage is a creative, intuitive, graceful, flowing art, not a mechanical system of pressing or rubbing on predetermined points. Therefore it is natural that therapists express their creativity by developing their own styles.

This leads to an ever developing evolution of massage techniques. Without that there would be no growth, no spontaneity, no improvement. Of course there are traditionalists who believe that everything should be done like it has been done for hundreds or thousands of years. And that can also be a good thing. In this way a core style can be preserved and maintained as a bench mark against which newer styles can be measured. And some traditional systems are very good the way they are.

At some point every single massage system has been invented and developed by someone. And those persons were innovators. Innovators create, and traditionalists maintain. There is a place for both. The world would be a boring place without innovation, new creative ideas, and new styles and techniques in the massage and healing arts arena or any other field.

Thai Massage is often not practiced the same way in western countries as it is done in Thailand. The reason for that is that western therapists, unlike their Thai counterparts, have much more access and exposure to other massage styles. Therefore there is always a tendency to mix and blend and combine techniques. Therapists in Thailand have generally never been exposed to anything but the traditional way of working, and therefore you don't find much blending and changing in Thailand.

Also western therapists have often started out learning massage, and mostly Swedish massage, on a table. Therefore many of them have adapted Thai Massage to the table which of course changes it somewhat, and many blend Thai Massage with Swedish massage.

Personally I have studied Thai Massage in Thailand with several excellent and well known teachers. They all had their own style and their own unique techniques. And that is without blending Thai Massage with any other modalities.

So what style should you choose as an aspiring Thai Massage practitioner? This depends on 4 factors mostly:

1. What style do you most enjoy receiving? You will do best giving what you like to receive.

2. Which teacher do you resonate with? You will be most inspired if your teacher can bring the technique alive for you.

3. Which style works for you and your body? For example, if you study a very rigid style which relies on a lot of thumb pressure work, but your thumbs cannot handle it, then this is not the best choice for you. You will do better with a softer style. Or if you study a style which uses a lot of difficult stretches, but you are 5 foot tall, then this might be difficult for you. So make sure that you study a style that works for your body.

4. What is your objective? Do you just want to learn a few good moves to spice up your main style? Or do you want to learn and practice Thai Massage as a complete system? In the latter case it is much more important that you pick a style that suits you.

The best way to find out what works for you is to receive Thai Massage sessions from a variety of practitioners. In addition to getting general full body treatments, ask for specific therapeutic work and get a feeling for how they are being handled by various therapists.
