Using Massage for Depression Relief

For people who are depressed, massage for depression is not a cure but may help lessen some of the symptoms and support recovery.

About Depression

Depression is a brain disorder, and research has shown that the brains of depressed people look and act differently from the brains of people who aren't depressed. The causes of depression are not well understood, but most likely involve a combination of genetic, biochemical, environmental, and psychological factors.

Depression comes in many types. For example, major depression is disabling and prevents a person from functioning normally in daily life, while dysthymia is a milder, usually long-term, depression where a person can still function but probably isn't living a normal and full life. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which usually affects people during the winter months, is also a type of depression.

Often the most obvious symptom of depression is an overwhelming feeling of sadness, but depression has many other possible symptoms that vary depending on the type of depression and the individual. Common symptoms include:

  • Appetite changes

  • On-going physical problems, such as aches and pains, headaches, or digestive problems that don't improve with treatment

  • Fatigue

  • Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, helplessness, or irritability

  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in life, including lack of sexual desire

  • Trouble concentrating and making decisions.

The two most common depression treatments are medication and psychotherapy. Another treatment, primarily used for SAD, is light therapy, which involves exposure to a strong artificial light that mimics sunlight.

Massage for Depression

Touch is important to human beings - babies die without touch. Lack of touch may even contribute to depression. And, if a person is depressed, massage may help.

First, dealing with depression presents a lot of stress, and relaxation is one of the best benefits of massage. Depression can also lead to muscle tension and pain that massage can help relieve.

Beyond helping a person relax, massage may reduce the body's production of stress hormones, such as cortisol and norepinephrine, and may also increase the body's production of pain-killing endorphins and mood-altering serotonin. Studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami have shown:

  • Lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol immediately after massage.

  • Increased serotonin, dopamine, and endorphin levels, helping elevate a person's mood, after massage.

  • Increased production of oxytocin, a hormone that reduces stress and promotes relaxation, after massage.

These effects may occur because the skin and muscles contain many millions of nerve receptors that are linked to the nervous system. Touch and massage can stimulate the nerve receptors, causing the release of chemicals in the brain.

The benefits of massage for depression are further supported in a review, published in the March 2010 Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. The authors reviewed 17 studies of massage for depression and concluded the studies supported the ability of massage therapy to significantly lessen symptoms of depression.

Plus, a great benefit of massage therapy is that it rarely has side effects, when received from a trained, qualified massage therapist. People who want to try massage for depression should always let their massage therapist know about their condition and other treatments and tell other healthcare providers that they are receiving massage.

Massage Therapy Training - What Does it Take?

Massage therapy is growing in popularity because of the many health benefits that it contains. However, we the realization of the benefits is not something that is recent. As a matter of fact, massage therapy has been used for approximately 2,400 years. It was actually Hippocrates who noted that friction has certain health benefits. In modern times, massage therapy is being used for treating tired muscles, reducing stress, taking care of painful ailments, and even in physical therapy as a tool to rehabilitate after an injury.

The massage therapist massages the soft tissues of the body in order to improve circulation. This improvement in circulation removes waste from the muscles. Anytime there is any sort of waste product in the muscle, the muscle doesn't work properly. Administering massage therapy does take a special type of training, which is not hard to acquire.

The training

There are almost 2,000 massage therapy programs within the United States today. They exist within post secondary schools and in colleges. There are many career centers that offer massage therapy courses. Students can acquire financial aid to take the classes or they can pay out of their pocket. The cost of the class is usually not as much as your traditional college course. This is because massage therapy programs do not last as long. There are some programs which last as little as 10 months to a year. The focus is just on massage therapy and the curriculum that is required to prepare for it.

The curriculum includes learning anatomy, the organs and tissues, and the physiology of the body. Massage therapists also learn business ethics and they study body mechanics and motion.

Learning massage therapy is also very hands on. In order to properly learn the techniques, the student must practice frequently. This is usually done with their fellow students before taking their newly learned techniques on the road. Many massage therapy schools will take their students to sporting events, such as marathons, to give massages to the marathon runners at the end of the event. This helps speed up muscle repair and makes the runner feel much better.

What does it take?

Now that you know that finding a school is easy and that getting in is fairly easy, you simply have to have a drive to learn. As stated before, the classes do not last that long. This means you have to learn a lot in a short period of time. With the proper motivation, you can do that.

In the end, you do have to take the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. This is an exam given by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and they do have their own criteria that must be met.

There are several areas that are covered by this exam. They are: kinesiology and physiology, pathology, therapeutic massage assessment and application, anatomy, ethics, professional standards, and legal and business practices.

Once this exam is passed, you can run with the world. This is because you can be employed within a chiropractor's office, a fitness club, another type of doctor's office, or you can have your own business. If you can acquire your own massage therapy equipment, then you will make the highest salary by having your own business. This is because people will pay a lot of money for a quality massage.

So if you don't think you have what it takes, know that you are wrong because you do. Find a school, enroll for the class, take the class, take the exam, and then decide what it is you want to do from there. There are many career possibilities, so run with them.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Techniques to Eliminate Pain - Treating Tightness in Pectoralis Minor Muscle

How would you feel if you had access to a unique technique to teach to your clients so that they could practice these exercises between consultations and thereby speed up recovery?

And what if this new technique wasn't covered in textbooks or manuals about carpal tunnel syndrome nor in medical school? A technique that is fully effective, is practical and has the potential to give professional massage therapists an "unfair advantage" when it comes to diagnosing, treating and monitoring this condition.

Due to her own need to deal with her own overworked hands Hilma Volk, a licensed massage therapist with over 20 years experience noticed how a rowing team was treating their own numb hands. She further developed, tested and refined techniques that can be easily imparted and are effective in treating not only the fingers and hands but other limbs as well.

A casual remark at a continuing education course sowed the seed for the solution, namely, that tightness in the pectoralis minor muscle can be taken for a false carpal tunnel.

Hilma worked out a technique where she could work on her pectoralis minor muscle, and, with just a few treatments in one day, each treatment about a minute at a time at the most, the pain had gone. She continued over the next few days, a few minutes at a time, and repeating this monthly to keep muscle loose and supple. The beauty of Hilma's technique is that it offers permanent relief from the pain.

From her professional experience Hilma has found that pain in a number of different places in the body can give similar symptoms to true carpal tunnel syndrome. That's why accurate diagnosis is so important. She found that very rarely do people feel pain in the areas that are actually causing the problem. Rather it is necessary to clarify with them where the pain actually exists. And massaging these muscles or areas can indeed be painful so her clients are encouraged to do the massaging (and, of course, repeating it in their own time until the pain clears).

Experience with clients also showed that clients will not always be forthcoming with verbalizing their actual problem because they don't realize it can be cured. This underlines the importance of professional expertise in correct diagnosis, treatment and monitoring between successive consultations.

Relieved with their pain gone clients will see their professional massage therapist as a 'superstar' and with the momentum so generated the professional will be able to take on more clients and further grow his/her business.

Massage Therapy - Benefits and Considerations For an Athlete

Most of us will probably believe that a massage is a luxury reserved only for special times in our lives like birthdays or anniversaries. As a matter of fact, it is not only an indulgence but also a way of keeping our mind and body healthy. There are a lot of reasons people get a massage. It can either be for medical reasons to alleviate pain or just simply to be more relaxed and rejuvenated. Massage therapies like the hot stone massage therapy offers many therapeutic effects. It also gives your body an instant boost of energy.

Massage therapies is a soothing practice for the mind, body and soul that is why it is able to relieve the stress. It also has physical conditioning effects that are a great help for a professional athlete. For instance, after doing a tough workout in the gym, a massage can release the spasms which slow down blood flow. This will usually cause the inflammation, pain and dysfunction. With a massage, it will slowly improve blood circulation by allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients to vital organs and tissues. Over straining is prevented by the relaxation of the tension and sedation of the nervous system allowing muscles to work more effectively.

A massage can also reduce the recovery time needed for strenuous workouts by helping in the elimination of toxins. By improving blood circulation and increasing intake of water, these toxins can be cleared out of the body. This will maximize blood flow improving the general nutrition of the muscles for optimal performance.

Energy and vitality is also increased through a massage. It can facilitate the muscle-building response of the body at the same time improving the range of flexibility and motion. Muscles are elongated and its proficiency is increased.

Although there are many benefits you can acquire physically from a massage therapy, you have to keep in mind some of these important points.

o Remember that you will not acquire the full benefits of a massage therapy if you only have one session. It will take several treatment sessions before you achieve the expected physical effects such as releasing spasms and tightness.

o You may want to focus on specific areas because of the demand it receives but do not forget this is a holistic approach. Do not overlook other parts of your body to avoid future pains and aches.

o It is also better to ask advice from your doctor and your therapist. It is much better to have a collaborative treatment plan with professionals so you will be sure of the proper treatment plan.

o Do not hesitate to speak up when you feel uncomfortable or pain in the massage therapy session. For instance, if the rock used in the hot stone therapy is too warm, inform your masseuse immediately.

After keeping in mind all these considerations and benefits, it is now time to book your first massage session. Check the credentials of the massage therapist to make sure you have quality bodywork. In your first visit, it is important that massage therapist take a history of your specific problem areas and goals. Then, together with your doctor and therapist, you can now set the best schedule to maximize your goals.

Physical Therapist Salary: Rewarding Efforts

Physical therapy has been characterized as expensive, time consuming and involving. Word on the street coupled with lack of desire to ascertain whether this is true has led to misinformation and misleading reports on both physical therapy and therapist salaries.

The physical therapist salary is a bone of contention for many. For a fact, these salaries are considered above average and ultimately brilliant career choices. While being regarded as hefty, there is reasonable attachment for this.

Taking into consideration the recovery time needed to recuperate or to get used to their situations, physical therapist salaries are worthwhile. This is not the only reason, in case one is already up in arms. Most of the time spent by physical therapists in aiding a patient is done on his feet, coupled with the fact that he or she needs to be caring supportive and patient, something that will ultimately lead to emotional attachment to the patient.

Energy and self will are also exercised. Physical therapists have to adapt to a patient's daily routine, their nature, character, moods and ultimately gain their trust. The recovery of the patient is the primal need of the physical therapist hence he or she tries everything possible for the sake of the patient. It is a no wonder that physical therapist salaries are considered above average.

Apart from the generous salary that comes with physical therapist practice, there exists enticing benefits are medical, dental, insurance, optical and even vacation packages. Speaking truthfully, this is a terrific bargain anywhere in the world.

Physical therapy pay is affected by the location of the practitioner. Different states have different rates and thus, ultimately influence migration of experts to regions that favor them career wise. Moreover, various employers compensate differently. Since physical therapists are free to work anywhere considering they make their own schedule, they are paid in dynamics.

Working for private hospitals or running their own business can lead to being paid hourly at their own discretion but the government or non-governmental organization also have their own rates? The aspect of experience affects the levels and degree of payments between PTs and their assistants. A wide range of gathered information and advice from ascertained and experienced physical therapists will be of immense help to patients, their families and the general public.

Money is far not everything one gets working as a PT. The thing is this job is really difficult, as the task of a real professional is to help people gain their overall health, especially mobility (after head injuries, accidents, fractures, cerebral palsy, lower back pain, arthritis and heart diseases). This is why many people refuse from this career and try to find themselves in other fields.

Importance of Attending Massage Therapy School

These days many people are interested in massage therapy; but, they're not sure as to whether it's a promising career or not. However, one thing's for sure - massage centres are all set to grow with the increasing demand by people. Therefore, if you're a masseur and are good at it you would certainly have plenty of clients to tend to.

There are plenty of reasons as to why you would need to attend massage therapy school if you plan on becoming a professional masseur. Of course you would be able to learn a lot just by watching a masseur do his or her job. But, that wouldn't help you a bit.

Why attending massage therapy school is a priority

As already mentioned, it's not going to be of any help to you if you just watch others massaging people rather than going to a school. There are plenty of reasons as to why this is said:

You've got no certification!

If you plan on becoming a professional masseur you're going to need a certificate to prove your qualifications. More importantly if you intend on beginning a private services you're going to need to showcase your certificates in order to get your clients to trust you.

You learn about the human body

If you're going to be a good masseur you're certainly going to have to know a lot about the human body and how it functions. Physiology is one of the subjects that you would be taught in your massage centre.

You need to know this because the positioning of major organs, tissues and muscles is of utmost importance if you're going to help relieve stress from anyone's body.

Management skills

As already mentioned, if you're going to become a professional masseur, there's a high probability that you may want to be a private masseur and not work under anyone. If that's the case you're going to need management skills in order to manage not just your time, but also finances.

You need to be able to keep current clients and at the same time gain the trust of new clients; you don't just need communication skills for this task, but also management skills as you would need to cater to the needs of various clients at the same time - keeping them all happy.

You have to touch people

There are plenty of people who hate touching other people, but if you're going to be a masseur you certainly can't be one of these people. Therefore, at massage school they see to it that you actually massage people.

So, whilst you're getting training on massage you would also be getting over the fear of touching others. Due to these reasons and the many others it's really important that you attend massage school.

What Is Watsu Massage Therapy?

During a massage, it can sometimes feel like you are floating on a cloud. But imagine the sensation of having a massage in water. The weightlessness that the buoyancy of the water gives you can be accompanied by a trained practitioner who guides you into deep stretches in a shallow pool of warm water. It sounds nice, doesn't it? It's called Watsu massage therapy, a type of underwater massage that lets you dive right in.

This type of massage therapy was developed by Harold Dull in 1980 and since that time its popularity has grown. Dull, who had studied Zen Shiatsu in Japan, brought the principles of his Asian education back to North America where he was a massage therapist. Dull coined the idea of using the buoyancy of water to stretch his patients' bodies, improving the flow of their vital energy throughout their bodies and inducing a profound state of relaxation. To date, Dull has trained thousands of Watsu practitioners at his school, The Watsu Institute located in Northern California.

Practitioners, known as watsuers, guide a client's body through a series of stretches. Watsuers cradle their clients, rocking them, twisting them, pulling and pushing their limbs through the weightlessness environment provided by the water. He or she may also apply pressure to specific touch points along the body; however, the stretching part is emphasized as the main part of this massage therapy. A watsuer uses his or her own body to enhance the series of stretches that are being performed on the client by bracing certain positions or wrapping the client's body around his or her own.

Watsu is a great form of physical therapy for children, adults and seniors alike. It is also an excellent form of physical therapy for people with physical disabilities, such as arthritis, lower back pain, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida or paralysis. While for many people it takes as few as one Watsu session to become a believer, it may not be the right kind of massage therapy for everyone. That's because it requires an enormous amount of trust because, after all, you are putting yourself literally in the hands of another person for a full hour and you are both in the water. And, your eyes are closed.

Study after study documents the healing powers associated with water, which is backing the desire and demand for aquatic-based therapies such as Watsu. Moreover, the fact that many of these therapies are performed in warm water serves to assist the muscles into entering into a state of relaxation, increased flexibility and soothing warmth that can alleviate some forms of pain or discomfort.

The interesting thing about Watsu massage therapy is that it also has a very profound spiritual aspect to it. Clients that have entrusted themselves completely to their watsuer during a session can allow themselves to enter into a profound state of meditation. The tranquil environment that exudes silence and trust makes it an ideal place for people to reflect on their inner selves.

Physical Therapy for Chronic Low Back Pain

Low back pain is commonly associated with soft tissue pathology, often with resulting compensatory muscle guarding (spasm). This often involves both the paraspinal and abdominal musculature. Physical rehabilitation, including strengthening of the abdominal and paraspinal muscles through lumbar stabilization protocols has been shown to reduce pain and improve function.

In many cases, muscular pathology is the primary cause and instigator of the chronic low back pain and can be effectively treated with a lumbar stabilization program. Physical therapy is by and large short term and very goal oriented, with the hopeful end result being a patient whose pain has been decreased and having a home program for continued benefit.

Patients are educated on lumbar stabilization exercises and activities designed to prevent further injury to the spine. The overall goals for physical therapy with chronic back pain include the following:

  • Promote and maintain function

  • Prevent further injury

  • Reduce pain and promote return of normal function using modalities (e.g. heat and cold, TENS - transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, ultrasound)

It is imperative that patients remain active participants in their rehabilitation to achieve maximum benefit in cases with relentless chronic LBP. Trigger point injections may be beneficial along with the physical rehabilitation along with chiropractic treatment. Spinal adjustments along with physical therapy may facilitate functional improvement. Spinal decompression therapy may add to pain relief as well.

Many times it's not simply one treatment that makes all the pain go away, it may in fact be a combination of treatments provided. Seeking treatment at a comprehensive pain center may therefore be in the best interest when dealing with recalcitrant chronic low back pain.

Massage Therapy Careers - The Truth About Becoming a Massage Therapist

Massage Therapy Careers are the latest trend in the career arena, promising great high paying jobs, flexibility and more meaningful work. This is really only part of the story. While you can find these qualities in a career in massage, there is much more to becoming a massage therapist than meets the eye.

First, most massage therapists start their own business. Massage jobs usually don't pay enough to make a good enough living to support a family and save for retirement. Jobs start at $15 an hour at most places. For the most part you can not work more than 25 hours a week because of the physical demands of the work. When you don't have a client you also only get paid minimum wage so that reduces your salary. There are some places like medical clinics and high end spas that may pay more like $45 an hour but those jobs are of course harder to find.

Massage school only really teaches you how to do massage. It doesn't really teach you how to be successful in a massage business. You will need to learn how to market your business, how to set your rates, how to find office space and create a website for your business.

The average age of massage therapists is 45 meaning that massage schools are geared toward teaching adults with more life experience. Because touch has a way of bringing up deeper psychological issues, it is important to know yourself more and be more aware of yourself in order to work with people more successfully.

Because massage is a profession that works with people who are in pain and are vulnerable to begin with, the client/massage therapist relationship becomes an important part of the healing process. It requires an understanding of the psychology of relationships and a deeper understanding of why you are drawn to helping others. Most people help others to feel better about themselves and get some of their own personal needs met. When you try to get your needs met through your client and work, it creates a conflict of interest. Your main focus should always be your client not your own needs. You can get more support for your own need through engaging in the process of peer supervision which is just starting to be offered more in massage schools and for advanced training.

The thing is that you can be a successful massage therapist and even make $100,000 a year when you are able to charge what you need to make and get the help you need in marketing and promoting your business. It is also a matter of uncovering your unconscious beliefs about yourself so that you can achieve the massage therapy career of your dreams.

Additional Benefits of Massage

Touch is a unique way of humans in communicating affection and other messages. It is one of the five senses that is commonly used by health care providers in allaying anxiety to any ill person as well as the best non-verbal method of conveying sympathy when words fail the person. This is also encouraged by nurses and caregivers to use in caring for children at the hospital, especially the immature neonates. There are studies that gave credit to touch as one factor in helping the immature baby to increase weight and survival rate.

Four basic techniques of massage is usually taught to mothers at the hospital to be later on administered to their newborns. These techniques are (a) effleurage that involves long and gliding strokes of the palm on the skin, much like spreading a lotion repeatedly in order to enhance circulation, (b) petrisage connotes kneading motion of the hand by gently grasping skin and muscle and gently releasing to work on enhancing the development of a specific area of the body, (c) percussion, the application of vibrating, repeated motion to mobilize inner structures like back clapping to mobilize secretions of the lungs, as well as chopping motion in order to increase alertness and wakefulness and (d) friction is akin to rubbing motion of the hands on a specific body part to increase circulation to the area, thus increasing the temperature.

Massage has a number of benefits and can be categorized into biological, psychological and physical. One of the physical benefits of massage is its ability to increase range of motion of a particular limb. A person who had been confined to bed may have difficulty standing up and gain his balance. Prior to such attempt of movement, massage is done so as to increase the flow of the blood supply to the specific body part. When a muscle is relaxed, all the more that it is easy to move.

The psychological effect of massage is somewhat holistic in nature. Once the individual feels relaxed because the tension and stress of the day had been eased off by the massage, the individual who received the massage is more accommodating in listening to subordinates or colleagues. A feeling of lightness is also felt after a satisfying massage. Consequently, anxiety is reduced,

Torch Research Institute at the University of Miami conducted a study involving massage and concluded that children's immune system improved as evidenced by the increase of blood components in the blood further aiding the immune system to fight illness and infections.

Otherwise advised by the physician, the massage techniques mentioned are usually performed by mothers to their newborn to promote mother-newborn closeness as well as fast growth and development of the child. In times of illness, children who are frequently held and massaged are usually less fussy and recover much earlier than expected.

Adults, on the other hand, can still enjoy such experience through technological advancement in the presence of shiatsu massage chair and the likes. Such equipments are now readily available for the different needs of consumers, depending on the type of massage they desire.

Continuing education credits

PTAs may also be required to obtain continuing education credits may be for license renewal or additional certifications. This gives them the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skill set and makes them an important part of their team.

Specialization

You may also choose to specialize in their area of interest. Such as aquatic, pediatric, geriatric, etc. It is a certification program to receive the Certificate of Advanced Proficiency and is offered by the APTA. It has the following prerequisites:

Tips to Better Marketing and Advertising for Massage Therapists

Massage therapists have been taught that successful marketing attempts are primarily word-of-mouth (WOM) advertising. We are influenced to use advertising tools such as business cards, coupons, fliers, and newsletters to help generate customers. To many, these epitomes are the Holy Grail in becoming successful but much to their disappointment, these efforts fail to generate a sufficient number of customers.

Many advertising tools used by massage therapists are used in a manner that results in disappointment. Learning how these advertising tools should be used in a well thought out marketing strategy is paramount to a successful advertising venture.

A marketing strategy is a planned selling effort that utilizes the most effective advertising tools directed towards a preferred customer. Mistakenly, many massage therapists are taught that everyone will benefit from their services; therefore, everyone is their preferred customer. Although the demand for massage therapy services is increasing, there are still a number of individuals for which massage will not be an option whether it is by choice or health.

Massage therapy customers can be categorized into three primary groups.

▪ Stress and Tension Reduction

▪ Pain Management or Injury Care

▪ Pampering and Self-Wellness

Identifying which category your primary customer belongs will help you to direct your marketing efforts towards the correct audience. Those that are already familiar with and interested in your services will give you the more successful results.

For instance, one massage therapist had blogged that her most successful advertising attempt was through newsletters with a $10 coupon. Whether she was aware of it or not, she aimed the newsletter to individuals that were already within her preferred customer group.

This is even true with whom you choose to leave your business cards. Your business cards are an excellent way to attract customers to your practice. Recognizing where these potential customers are categorized will help you to develop a strategy to lure them to make their first appointment by using the back side of the card. Use it as a punch card for a free or reduced rate treatment, to announce a discount rate for bringing a friend or family member, or as an appointment reminder.

Fliers have long been a traditional method of advertising for massage therapists, even for Phoebe on Friends. Distribution to your preferred customer is the best route for these popular circulars; not on the random windshields of uninterested and environmentally conscience individuals. Get permission from local businesses where your preferred customer frequents and leave them there for interested parties to pick up.

Yes, the many different variances of word-of-mouth marketing are excellent ways to attract customers and even retain customers, if you know the "who, what, when, where, and how" of your preferred customer. Starting with that understanding will save your much time and resources. Try these tips here and begin your journey to a more successful massage therapist entrepreneur.

Teaching Children With Autism - Know Your Options

Teaching children with autism can be very challenging, but very rewarding. It definitely takes a different skill set to teach children with autism, and a supportive school system to do it well. While many public schools have excellent special education schools, many do not. This is why there are also many great private schools that exist to fill the needs of autistic children in search of a personalized education.

Traditional Classrooms May Not be the Best Way to Teach a Child with Autism

A lot of kids with special needs, including autism, have real problems succeeding in a traditional classroom. Very often, they will need one-on-one instruction to be able to learn. Kids with autism often are distracted by sensory issues and many other things in a traditional classroom. Frequently, they are the target of bullying, which can create self-esteem issues and, of course, greatly affect the child's concentration and learning.

Individualized Education Programs for Kids with Autism

Many autistic kids require individualized learning programs that public schools often are not able to give. Parents usually try to make public schools work for their kids before looking somewhere else, but sometimes there is no choice. Hence, the rising number of private special education schools for kids with autism.

These schools make teaching children with autism into a whole different kind of journey. They have different theories, smaller classes, and more individualized programs. There is usually a 1:1 or 1:2 student to teacher ratio. There are several kinds of special education schools, from day schools and boarding schools, autism only schools and schools that accept kids with a wide range of disabilities.

Choose a Teaching Style that Fits Your Child with Autism

Teachers in some schools will analyze a child's learning style, behaviors, strengths and weaknesses to create a teaching style that works well with that child. Other schools have a more one-size-fits-all approach, using theories of behaviorism or applied behavior analysis (ABA) for all kids, without much variation in manner in which they are used.

Specialized Autism Schools

Specialized autism schools usually include the various therapies that they offer in the price and curriculum. Such therapies can include speech, occupational and physical therapies. These therapies, as well as the individualized attention for the kids come with a hefty price tag, however. Schools can often be up to $50-$75,000 a year. However, parents can sometimes get special schools paid by their local school districts as long as they can prove that their local school is not able to meet their child's needs.

To find these schools, you may want to do an Internet search for them, or ask your local autism society. Most of the time, public schools do an excellent job teaching children with autism but it is important also to know of the other options that are out there.

Preparing for Your First Physical Therapy Session

If you are recovering from an injury or surgery you may have to undergo physical therapy rehabilitation. If you have been in an accident and suffered neck, back or leg injuries that required surgery you most likely will need therapy to regain flexibility, strength, coordination and reduce pain. As with any medical appointment the first visit to a physical therapist can cause anxiety and nervousness but if you prepare properly and know what to expect you can make your visit a comfortable experience that will get you on the road to recovery.

The best way to prepare for a physical therapy appointment is to know what to expect. Chances are you are undergoing rehabilitation as part of a recovery program and will have been referred to a physical therapist by your primary care physician. It doesn't hurt to search online for information about the therapist and the practice to read reviews from former patients who can give you insight into how their sessions went. The goal of most first sessions is to give the patient a physical evaluation and determine goals for treatment. A therapist will likely want to check your flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, posture and heart rate before beginning any program.

In addition to the evaluation a therapist will want to review your medical history including the recent injury or surgery. Be ready for this by listing any and all injuries and surgeries you have had in your life as well as any serious illnesses, recurring problems and debilitating conditions. Also tell the physical therapist about any medications you may be taking or have taken in the past. The more information the therapist has about your medical history the better he or she can map out a rehabilitation program that will take into account problems you have had.

Depending on your condition you may start therapy right away so it always good to prepare by wearing loose fitting clothing that is comfortable to perform exercises in. The initial treatment won't be strenuous but your therapist may want to assess the amount of pain and swelling in a particular area and see how you react to treatment. If your injury is severe a therapist may need to fit you for special equipment including footwear, splints and crutches. Part of physical therapy is educating the patient on how to perform exercises at home so you can transfer the skills you learn to your daily life. Approach your first physical therapy session with an open mind and be prepared to learn since rehabilitation is an ongoing process that continues outside of the clinic.

When Do You Need Carpal Tunnel Release Physical Therapy?

Carpal tunnel is the term for a vessel found in the hand, which contains many other important nerves. Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when there is pressure or inflammation in the nerves within the carpal tunnel.

The initial treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome is non-surgical. However, if symptoms do not improve or the condition persists for more than six months, your doctor will most likely recommend surgery, also known as carpal tunnel release, to ease the pressure on the carpal tunnel.

What happens in a carpal tunnel release?

Carpal tunnel release is a surgical procedure, which involves cutting the surrounding tissues on the wrist to lessen the pressure on the affected nerve. The traditional method of surgery is open release surgery, wherein the doctor widens the carpal tunnel by cutting the ligament through an incision made on the wrist about two inches in size.

Another type of carpal tunnel release surgery is endoscopic surgery, which often requires two incisions, each half an inch in size, one on the wrist and another on the palm. Some doctors may make only one incision on the wrist. Next, the doctor inserts a tube with a camera through one of the incisions and by observing the onscreen view of the affected area, the doctor efficiently proceeds with cutting the carpal ligament. Endoscopic surgery provides quicker recovery, minimal post-surgery discomfort and less scarring than open release surgery.

Patients may have carpal tunnel release done on one or both hands. Patients are usually under local anesthesia during the surgery but some cases may require general anesthesia. Carpal tunnel release is an outpatient procedure so patients do not have to stay in the hospital overnight.

After surgery, your focus will naturally be a speedy recovery. It is important to note that complete recovery may take several months. Patients should go through carpal tunnel release physical therapy to strengthen the wrist. If it is not necessary for you to change your job, your therapist may ask you to change some work habits or adjust some activities that may affect your recovery.

Doctors usually recommend carpal tunnel release physical therapy when patients are undergoing surgery on both hands. In this case, the patient undergoes carpal tunnel release physical therapy in between surgeries to advance the recovery process. When recommending carpal tunnel release physical therapy, doctors look at the extent of the surgery and the condition of the operated area. While carpal tunnel release physical therapy is not compulsory, it will certainly contribute to a faster recovery.

Energy Field Work and the Journey of the Massage Therapist

I taught a class once back in the early 90's at a large massage school out West. The classroom was filled with 48 students, and nearly 33% of them were not interested in learning about Rolfing. I asked them why, they replied it wasn't energy work like cranial sacral therapy or Reiki. I laughed at these newbies, because they had no idea how powerful Dr. Rolf's energy field was purported to be, a fact that I emphasize in all my massage continuing education classes. There were rumors that when Dr. Rolf shook your hand, you felt it in your feet.

Now, I teach massage continuing education classes around the country, in a?culture that has a type of societal shock when it comes to to the concept of biological energy. Mae Wan Ho one of the leading quantum physicists of our time, has demonstrated that the human organism is a liquid crystalline matrix. We understand as a planet what is meant by an energy crisis, but the forces of nature and all our new technologies are constantly bombarding us with this invisible energy.

Way back in the early 1900 Dr. Harold Saxton Burr, Ph.D? who was E. K. Hunt Professor Emeritus, Anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Burr was a member of the faculty of medicine for over forty-three years. From 1916 to the late 1950's, he published, either alone or with others, more than ninety-three scientific papers on the concept that all living things are molded and controlled by electrodynamic fields, which could be measured and mapped with standard voltmeters. Illness both mental and physical deviated from standard measurements of healthy subjects.

Why was his 20 years of research passed over by mainstream medicine? Well, look no further than the explosive growth of the budding Pharmaceutical industry that dominates to this day the concept of dealing with every type of illness known to our species.

Regarded as one of the most popular and sought after complementary and alternative medicine service all over the world, the aromatherapy massage remains to be an effective and beneficial type of therapeutic massage. Since its early practice in the ancient times, it has continued to gain popularity and draw interest among the public due to many scientific reports of positive and beneficial healing properties. Like any other medical care, you need to prepare yourself physically and mentally in order to gain a better result afterwards. The first thing in your list should be a visit to professional medical personnel such as your doctor which can give you the good pros and cons of an aromatherapy massage.

In case you got a good feedback from your doctor, perhaps the next thing on your list would be to find a good and affordable spa with highly skilled and trained, certified and licensed massage therapists. Checking the medical track records of the personnel at the spa would be a good idea as you wouldn't want to be serviced by an unlicensed individual. When you have found the right spa for you, ask your massage therapist for advices on how to prepare yourself for your coming massage therapy session. He or she will most likely tell you to avoid getting a full stomach or having a heavy meal prior to your session. You will also be told to arrive early at the spa as well as be informed that you will be half-naked during the massage therapy session.

Make sure that you listen to your massage therapist and follow what he or she says especially during the session to have a wonderful aromatherapy massage experience at the spa.

Rehabilitation After Calcaneal Fractures

Fractures of the heel bone or calcaneus can be very severe injuries as the joints involved in the hind foot are very complex and very important in weight bearing and walking. Most calcaneal fractures are caused by vertical loading such as falls from a height or vehicle accidents. The fractures which result from such injuries are potentially so variable and complex that it has taken a long time to classify them and get some idea what the best treatment is for each type. When the injury occurs the patient is immediately aware of significant pain and is unable to weight bear on the foot or feet involved. Pain is often severe and unpleasant with significant swelling of the heel and ankle area of the foot.

Initial management of calcaneal fractures is rest in bed with the foot up to reduce swelling from circulatory engorgement of the limb, with physiotherapy management involving ice treatment several times per day to reduce inflammation. The physio will maintain the mobility of the other leg and unaffected joints by regular movements and muscle activity. The patient may be managed conservatively or the surgeon may decide, after CT scanning, to pursue reconstructive internal fixation with metalwork. Once the treatment has been decided and the inflammation reduced to a suitable level the physiotherapist will start to get the patient up with crutches and an assistant.

Initial mobilisation is typically non weight bearing and the physiotherapist will teach the patient to hop safely with the crutches without putting the affected foot down. Mobility exercises of the ankle and hind foot may be practised regularly to maintain and improve joint movement. Once the surgeon indicates, the physio will progress the patient steadily on to gradual weight bearing. Patients may find weight bearing very difficult and painful as the fracture may cause significant dysfunction of the joints around the fracture, particularly the subtalar joint.

Once the fracture is well united the physio will progress the treatment to weight bearing in more stressful physical situations, gait instruction and correction, balance practice on wobble boards and more advanced work if possible. Significant fractures of the calcaneum often mean that the patient cannot regain the ability they had before the injury and may always walk with a limp or with some pain. Mobilisation techniques may be performed by the physiotherapist to allow increased accessory movements of the foot joints and encouraged increased function.

Body Massager and Benefits of Body Massager

There are many benefits of body massager. The use of massage is a fantastic way to incorporate the powers of holistic healing into your daily life. Massage can be used to bring two people closer together, which is why it is recommended for couples who are looking for something to spice up their relationship. It also helps invigorate the major systems of the body, such as the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, and respiratory systems. Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body using one or both hands. A good massage can also be very relaxing and therapeutic.

Body massager originated in Germany and is considered an age-old healing art. Many people pay hundreds of dollars to professional massage therapists to attain the healing properties of an amazing massage. Others rely on their spouse or loved one to massage their back. A body massager can also be used for someone who wants to get a good back massage in the comfort of their own privacy. Alternatively, a spouse or loved one can use a body massager on the individual wishing to relax their bones and muscles.

Stress has become a huge factor in the lives of many. Financial, marriage, and work-related stresses are common in almost every household across the country and across the world. It is no wonder that people are truly benefiting from the wonders of body massage. Massage by hands or by a massager can release stress by improving blood circulation and increasing oxygen flow. Stress in our lives can cause our muscles to become strained and tight and even lends to a buildup of toxins in the body. Regular massage helps to ease the tension and allow for a better functioning body and a more proper posture.

A massager can ease muscles, reduce stress, and give a feeling of well being. It also helps to distribute tissue and remove deposits of tissue found throughout the body. Massage can be taught in schools or through personal experience. You don't have to be a professional to give a great massage. A special massager will actually do most of the work for you if you are looking to give a good massage or reduce tension in your own back. Long handles are normally apart of any massager so the individual can reach their own back.

Prioritizing Physical Therapy Supplies

Unless you have immediate access to a "cash cow", stocking your new clinical practice with appropriate physical therapy supplies can be challenging. Don't set your expectations too high as it's not possible to start off with equal stock as an established practice. Prioritizing becomes paramount!

For example, in your geographic area what do you foresee as common diagnoses? In an aging community, you'll treat more joint problems and falls, which can culminate in sprains and muscular pain. For an obese population, you should invest in bariatric products. Of course, there are generic supplies for assessment purposes for consideration.

Once you've assembled a list of your must-haves, start another list of desirables, or supplies that can wait until the practice is more financially sound. Eventually you'll have the correct products for treating every medical challenge from deep tissue damage to stroke victims.

Ordering your basic inventory online will save money and time. It is also more convenient to have supplies shipped to your door. For research purposes, a good online resource is "physical therapy schools". Many list overviews of supplies and equipment necessary for the beginning practitioner.

To get a general idea of where to start:

Mobility is an area where you want to beef-up your supplies. Think swill balls, fitness balls and wobble boards.

You'll need a healthy stock of disposable hot and cold packs for reducing inflammation, pain and stiffness associated with injuries.

For positioning, support and treatment, obtain bolsters, pillows and wedges.

Scales and tape measures, blood pressure monitors and monitors for heart rates are just a few everyday assessment products.

For your geriatric patients think about transfer boards, canes, walkers and crutches.

If your practice will include orthopedic physical therapy, you'll want plenty of splints, hand weights, braces and collars.

Don't forget electrode prep products like creams, solutions and gels for your ECG, TENS and defibrillation equipment.

Exercise balls, grip balls and medicine balls come in varied sizes and shapes. Also, you'll need several exercise mats.

For deep tissue soreness, tubes and rollers of Biofreeze or your preferred cold therapy aid should always be on-hand.

You'll have great fun shopping for pediatric therapy aids, like a mobility crawler, Boo Boo cold packs, cheerful therapy balls and bright-colored tactile balls.

Your most significant cash outlay will be for therapeutic equipment, such as treatment tables, TENS units, ultrasound, XRay machines, treadmills and weight machines. You might save upfront money by leasing equipment until your personal cash cow ramps-up production! Whatever you decide, invest in quality supplies and equipment.

Another option is to open your practice part-time as you continue to work. You'd be pleasantly surprised how quickly your necessaries and "desirables" can be purchased!

Bottom Line: It's never too soon to begin visualizing your thriving practice as a physical therapist.

Risks of a Mayan Abdominal Massage

Throughout the centuries, the ancient people of Belize and other ancient countries all around the world have been using massage therapy as a part of their daily lifestyle. Therapeutic massage was used as the primary source of natural healing and remedy against all sorts of various sickness and medical conditions. There are many different types of ancient massage used during the early periods that were effective and successful in dealing with various health problems.

Among these massage types is the Mayan abdominal massage which was developed and specially designed to treat conditions in the abdomen, pelvic area, and reproductive system of a woman. Although the therapy is more beneficial to women due to the techniques it has in correcting the uterus which is the core focus of the therapy, men can also benefit and enjoy the great effects of the treatment. The Mayan abdominal massage was designed to strengthen the abdomen and pelvic area in order to improve the posture of the uterus. When the uterus is in its correct position, the blood, oxygen, lymph and chi will flow perfectly without any entrapment due to the tilting and squeezing of the pathway of these four important elements of the body. The body can also benefit from the relief of muscle spasms in the abdomen and back area of the body.

However, regardless of all the benefits including the 50% chance of conception after regular session with this therapy, the Mayan abdominal massage also has its own risks and contraindications. Like all other therapeutic massage that uses deep penetrating massage techniques, the level of risks and numbers of contraindications with the patients' conditions are much higher than that of the gentle and relaxing types of massage. The risks include the wrong manipulation of a massage therapist on the abdomen and the pelvic area. The realigning of the uterus should only be done by a professional massage therapist certified and knowledgeable in human anatomy. That is why hiring a highly trained and certified massage therapist is vital not only for the purpose of achieving the best results and benefits out of the massage therapy, but also to reduce the risks of injuries and accidents.

Contraindications to the treatment includes the therapy done during menstruation periods as it can cause abnormality in the flow of blood as pressure is exerted and circulation on pathways are improved. The massage therapy should not be taken five days before the period to avoid having gush of blood during the menstrual period. The therapy should also be avoided when IUD is present inside the system of a woman to avoid incurring problems. Pregnant women in their first 15 weeks should stay away from this type of therapeutic massage to avoid unexpected birth problems such as miscarriage.

Any individual, who has previous abdominal surgery or is suffering from injuries in the abdomen, should at least consult with their physician prior to taking this massage as a part of their alternative medical care. For the sake of receiving only the benefits of this massage, it would be best to follow the contraindication list and avoid using the therapy as much as possible.

History of Russian Massage

Massage therapy all over the world is regarded as the best alternative medical treatment for many different medical conditions such as dysfunctions, common ailments, and the popular acute and chronic body pain. The natural therapy also works as a method capable of giving total relaxation to the body and mind. In addition to that, with proper execution and precise manipulation of the body by the massage therapist, massage is perhaps the most beneficial treatment which at the same time has the lowest risks of injuries and contraindications.

During the ancient centuries, Russians were practicing natural healing with the use of herbal medicines which is similar to the practice of most Oriental countries. The healers would use essential herbs that contain healing properties and would put them on the body of the patient. Sometimes they would boil herbs and make concoctions for the patients to drink for the health recovery. They would also use twigs on the patients by striking it on the body. The twigs are also valued as essential massage tools. Several evidences depicting the use of small branches on the body were proven.

Russian massage therapy is a type of massage that was designed to help patients recover from traumatic injuries, common injuries, and other conditions of the body. Although massage therapy during the early centuries was practiced on most parts of the world, it was not until the 1860s that massage was researched and studied by the Russians. It was Dr. M. Y. Mudrov who was responsible for the development and association of therapeutic massage into Russian medicine. This development was credited to Dr. Mudrov which was known as the classical massage. It was the predecessor of the Russian massage therapy which was later then practiced in the rehabilitation of the physical condition of a patient.

During the early years in Russia, only the very rich individuals were able to afford having a luxurious massage therapy aside from getting an injury and a prescription from a doctor. It was first taught in medical and athletic establishments until the 1990s although Russian massage therapy was known by almost all people in Russia.

After the Second World War, Russia became interested on the importance and benefits of massage therapy due to the scarcity of medicine supply to the country. This paved the way for the development and use of the Russian massage therapy.

Russian massage therapy uses the common massage strokes and techniques used in a Swedish massage although the treatment itself differs due to the more focused approach of the Russia's beloved therapy. In a Russian massage, you can expect a faster recovery rate from your injury due to many good reasons. The hands of the therapists work slowly and gently on the patient's body to treat musculoskeletal problems, cardiovascular and neurological problems, gastrointestinal and many more disorders in a patient. However, the massage is quite aggressive and does include slight amount of pain due to the process of "waking the muscles". The therapy is quite related and similar to sports massage which is a therapeutic type of massage developed as well for the treatment of injuries.

Massage Therapy Supplies - 3 Top Tips for Getting the Best Value

As a newcomer to the massage business it is essential that you are able to source high quality massage therapy supplies from a reliable provider. This applies equally to a business that may have been established some time ago and, as anyone who is experienced in business knows, the ability to source quality supplies at low prices is often the difference between a successful business and one that is struggling to survive. Following are three ideas to help you get the best value for your money.

Find a Reputable Supplier

Once you have decided which massage therapy supplies you will need you have to find a reputable vendor, both of which tasks are easier said than done. A great way for the newcomer to find out what supplies are required is to visit and talk with massage therapy practitioners in your local area. With their experience they can be a great source of information and should be able to advise you on supplies as well as the suppliers that they use. Maybe go in for a massage yourself and once you are a paying customer it is amazing the information that someone will offer up freely. You will learn which suppliers to use and importantly which to avoid.

If you are lucky enough to find a good supplier local to yourself consider buying in bulk to get the best value and look for any overstocked or discontinued lines that you can buy cheaply.

Look Online

If a reliable local provider of massage therapy supplies is too expensive, does not have a wide selection of products or does not exist in your area you should look online. Your first task should be to look on a search engine for the supplies that you want. This will throw up a variety of online shops you can use. Before committing yourself to a purchase from any store check-out customer feedback for reliability and quality issues and remember to pay attention also to mailing costs, processing times and possible shipping delays.

Buying online is really a trade-off between pricing, delivery times and often quality, so take care. Perhaps you can make small purchases from a variety of online suppliers before committing yourself to a closer relationship with any one of them. As with non-online suppliers it is often better to buy in bulk, not just for the cost savings, but also because you are more likely to avoid potential stock shortages caused by unforeseen shipping delays.

Focus on Quality

Quality should be at the top of your list in what you offer your customers. It should pervade every area of your business particularly the individual service you provide to customers and the products that you offer them. Don't be tempted to compromise on quality for the sake of a short-term cost saving as it will not pay off in the long run. A satisfied customer is far more likely to be a source of future business referrals for you so make sure they will never have any cause to complain about your massage therapy supplies and products that you offer them.

Rotator Cuff Physical Therapy Will Fix Your Shoulder Fastest

Having torn my rotator cuff quite badly last year and ending up with a shoulder impingement I have discovered that rotator cuff physical therapy exercises are the quickest way to get your shoulder back to its pre injury state. This is equally true whether you are aiming to just speed up recovery time or recover from surgery.

Physical therapy is always recommended as part of the recovery process for cuff injuries. It is usually tried before resorting to surgery as most problems will respond to shoulder specific exercises. The exceptions to this are a full thickness rotator cuff tear or a severe shoulder impingement both of which may require surgery and a period of recuperation before starting physical therapy.

It is essential with any shoulder injury that you rest your shoulder properly for some time until the inflammation and pain have subsided. Any pain that you feel with specific movements is usually a sign that you are doing more damage to the muscle or tendons. Resting properly may well mean wearing a sling, avoiding driving and will certainly mean modifying your day to day activities to avoid painful movements. Along wit the rest, use non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help to reduce the inflammation. Inflammation of the muscles and tendons is the main cause of pain in rotator cuff injuries and controlling the inflammation is key to a successful recovery.

Once the inflammation and pain are under control it is essential to start exercises that are specifically aimed at rehabilitating this group of muscles and strengthening the shoulder. Physical therapy exercises will not be the general weight bearing shoulder exercises that we use to build muscle as these tend to focus on the main muscles of the shoulder and avoid the rotator cuff.

Rotator cuff physical therapy will involve exercises with little or no weight or resistance often relying on the natural resistance of the body to achieve the desired result. Just lifting the weight of your arm is often enough load to achieve the desired effect at first, moving on to small weights as the muscles gets better. Any exercise routine should include a series of gentle stretches to avoid further injury to the damaged muscle, followed by stabilising and strengthening exercises. You will be surprised how quickly your shoulder can return to normal once you start developing the rotator cuff muscle.

In my case, I managed to fix a bad shoulder rotator cuff tear and shoulder impingement, which I was told would require surgery, in just eight weeks using rotator cuff physical therapy exercises.
