This is sad to me, because we all know that we have to take good care of ourselves. The reality is that we take our bodies and health for granted. Well that is until something happens. We need ways to counteract the affects of stress and find balance in our lives. Whose Problem Do You Solve? Niche Marketing for Massage Therapists


Massage therapists often have an inherent resistance to "selling" themselves. If you find yourself reading this article: Congratulations! And just so you know, you are not selling out. You are providing a communications platform so that those who need your services can actually find you. That is a service in itself.

There is a logical principle that if you solve a client's problem better than your competition, under the same conditions (price, availability etc.) and communicate this to your potential clients, success (however you define this for yourself) is unavoidable. This simple statement opens up a whole drawer of possibilities of refining your communications practice to attract more of what you want.

Define problem?

What many do not realize is that it is not the product or service that the client desires, but rather the feeling, emotion and sensation that ensues when their problem is solved or improved. This should be the result of using the product or experiencing the service. A client's problem is not finding a massage therapist. The client's problem is that they are not feeling the way they would like to. And you might have the solution to that problem.

Here are some examples so you get the gist:

Starbucks does not sell coffee, they sell a community meeting place.

Mercedes does not sell cars, they offer status symbols.

Gatorade quenches thirst.

What is your solution?

Anticipating client problems, associating them with a demographic profile and offering a solution is essential to being able to address them successfully and critical to attracting that client group.

Every demographic has there own common set of problems. Yes, everyone is different, but based on commonalities such as age, profession, location and other keys we find that certain groups have similar needs. We often can define groups based on age, income, mobility, education, employment status, and even location.

Some examples of the more obvious groups are:

Seniors

Business people

Traveling business people

Pregnant women

Athletes

Some examples of the less obvious are:

People with fibromyalgia

Children with Down syndrome

Runners

Bikers

Shoppers

Young parents

Bereaved parents

Business leaders

What does this mean for your practice?

When you define your product or service, think about what you really provide. You may not always be able to directly call it by its name, but you should try to get as close to describing it as possible.

And then think about whom you can really relate too. Often this is based on your own life experiences during which you developed a deep understanding of a situation and are relaxed about it. It's important that you can relate without judgment to others experiencing the same situation and dealing with these people will not pose a difficult situation for you. The area where you can develop a deep rapport, is where you will likely be most successful.

The more accurately you can define your solution to an existing problem, the easier it is to communicate with your target market. Does that make sense? If you know that you are catering to senior citizens, it is easier to find out where the congregate, which publications they read and what other forms of communication they tend to prefer. It is also much easier to formulate the solution(s) you offer.

The question is always: How can I improve the client's experience in their current state by guiding them to a future state in which they have a better experience of themselves.

The next question is: How can I convey this information to them?

While there are many details that can be refined in this process it is important to return to the original thought of: "What problem am I solving here". I find that there are primary issues and secondary issues and sometimes even a third or fourth layer that offer opportunities to provide a unique service.

Let me provide an example.
Most likely the primary reason your client is showing up (for the first time) is that they have a PAIN in their... Probably one of the main reasons is that they have not spent the time to RELAX and by booking a massage they are giving themselves permission to do so. Maybe underneath all that is that they find themselves in a situation that will not allow them to take TIME AWAY from the circumstances and by visiting you they are doing so.

While the primary issue is often addressed by many: example: "relieve your pain with massage therapy", secondary and tertiary layers often go unmentioned.

For example: "Get immediate relief from your migraine headache, relax deeply and give yourself the time out you deserve".

Now, if your communication says (and this is a real example):

"[Name Removed] Massage Therapy is one of the more experienced massage practices in Los Angeles (located in North End, LA). I draw from 23 years of experience in healing work and massage therapy and a strong, intuitive, compassionate, and uniquely healing touch. I am versed in Swedish, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, On-site Chair Massage, and Energy Healing."

This statement not only requires the client to figure out on their own what the benefits are, but also leaves everything open to interpretation.

Would it not be better to say the following?:
"If you are looking for someone who will really listen to you and knows how sensitive you are, can alleviate the little aches and pains with comforting touch and send you off feeling like a new person, your should call ... for a free consultation."

Acupuncture Schools - What You Should Know About Acupuncture Training


If you're thinking about a career in acupuncture you'll want to learn how and where you can earn a certificate or degree in acupuncture. Perhaps you're already familiar with the field of acupuncture but if not you'll want to find out all you can both online and offline. It's thought that acupuncture has been practiced in China for at least 2,000 years and some think it's probably been practiced at least 3,000 years or so.

First of all you'll want to choose an acupuncture school that offers consultation services for its graduates. The schools that do, allow graduates after graduation, to consult with instructors regarding care of their patients. You'll also want to check to see if your state is on the national list of about 49 acupuncture schools with accredited programs and you'll want to find an acupuncture school that offers smaller classes.

Acupuncture schools that offer courses in traditional Chinese medicine often include related training or courses in traditional medicine, such as anatomy and physiology, body therapy, massage therapy, and other sciences. For naturopathy schools that offer acupuncture programs there is a list called the: List of Accredited Natural Medicine Colleges in North America. Check with the school you're considering making sure they have a wide selection of study resources available so you can have all the essential acupuncture materials for a broad learning experience.

You'll also want to find out what the acupuncture training, school and program options are in your home area. Try to find a school whose program emphasizes courses in traditional Chinese medicine because acupuncture is just one element of traditional Chinese medicine. There are a few acupuncture schools that teach acupuncture practitioners the five-element Oriental medicine approach to acupuncture, which is often used in conjunction with the traditional Western medical practices.

Acupuncture is used for: arthritis, headaches, migraines, to quit smoking, to lose weight , fertility, fibromyalgia, depression, insomnia, face lifts as in facial acupuncture, back pain, high blood pressure, pregnancy, cosmetic purposes, anxiety, panic attacks, Crohn's disease, asthma and on dogs and other pets or animals as in veterinary acupuncture.

If you haven't experienced acupuncture make to visit an acupuncture clinic to learn more about acupuncture. You might want to talk to an acupuncture specialist or naturopath about a possible acupuncture career also. Acupuncture programs in acupuncture schools can be expensive and usually require three years or so of classes and sometimes up to five years. If you have a naturopathic school in your area, email or give them a call to find out the licensing requirements in your state. If you do get financing help or aid in the form of federal assistance be sure to have selected a school that's accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).

An acupuncture career has great career growth potential. Just be sure to find out the length of the coursework and the expense upfront and know how you plan to handle it. Many have done it before you. If possible, intern in an acupuncture clinic in your neighborhood to get first hand experience before you decide. But make sure to learn about the licensing requirements for acupuncturists for your state before you do anything else.

Cardiovascular and Pulmonary PT Specialist: How To Become One


Who doesn't want an upgrade? Whether it's in your PC's memory, or in your Tab's games, or in any other techie stuff, who doesn't even want to have one? Even in our careers, we need an upgrade. Specializations are one of the most dreamt-of steps in an individual's career; you get to have the edge among the others of your same kind, and you get all the benefits - well, most of it.

You are on a steady, or shall I say stagnant career of being a physical therapist. You attend to various patients, come up with plans for their conditions and do the same routine without even a spark of adventure, and suddenly you thought of an upgrade, a specialization, some new pinch of spice to your PT career! To get started, here's what you do:

1. Secure your license. Your license should be your current one, which allows you to practice physical therapy in the United States or any of its places under. The council requires you to submit only one license verification of the two ways accredited. One is the submission of a print copy of on-line license verification. Some states have this and if you could locate one, print a copy from the website. Just ensure that your name, state, license number, expiration date, and verification are in good standing. Another way could be through state licensing agencies (mostly applicable to states without on-line verification). You may have such verification by sending a letter to your state board physical therapy with the request to send license verification from the licensing agency to the Specialist Certification Program.

2. Plot down your patient care forms. Two thousand (2,000) hours of direct patient in the specialty area is a requirement for the specialization. These 2,000 hours should be within the last ten years, wherein 25% or 500 hours of it occurred within the last three years or through the completion of an APTA credentialed cardiovascular and pulmonary residency program. These forms serve as evidence to your direct patient care experiences. The Description of Physical Therapy Experience relates your exposure per facility, wherein one form should be for each facility, and another for each position acquired for the experience per facility. The other form is the Summary Chart of Physical Therapy Experience makes a rundown of your exposures for the past ten years. The summary would include the following factors: year, facility name, number of weeks, hours per week, total hours of General Physical Therapy practice, Percentage of Clinical Practice, Total Clinical Hours in Specialty, Percentage of Direct Patient Care Hours in Specialty, Total Direct Patient Care Hours in Specialty, and Cumulative Total of Direct Patient Care Hours in Specialty. It is also recommended by the specialty council that practice settings should vary in acute and rehabilitative environments.

3. Comply with the other requirements. Aside from the two mentioned above, there are other requirements that need to be complied of: (1) ACLS Certification - applicants should be currently certified with Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association, and (2) Research - participation to the research process within the last ten years of PT practice is needed. The experience should be printed in a form (a) relating a brief statement of the experience and your involvement in the study, and (b) the abstract summarizing the study.

4. Fill out your application form. Once you're done with the above your requirements, you are now legible to fill out the forms for application of the Specialty Program.

5. Pay the prescribed fees. Fees may vary per membership of the APTA. Review fees are $500 for APTA members and $845 for non-APTA members, and testing fees are $800 for APTA members and $1,525 for non-APTA members.

6. Know your schedule. Your schedules and other miscellaneous information are given after your application has been approved by the council.

7. Prepare for your exams. Part of preparing for examinations is knowing the coverage of it. You may browse on some advanced books, journals and the Description of Specialty Practice (DSP). Another is to get familiar with the software. Since the examinations are through computers, getting familiar with the software makes it easier for you to toggle with questions and answers.

8. Pass the exams. You get the passing rate and you get your certificate for the specialty area, a label pin, and your name in the online directory of specialists in the field.

Reduce Shoulder Pain Today With Massage Therapy


When I see road signs that say "Shoulder Work Ahead," I can't help thinking that I should hang one of those outside my massage therapy office here in Millersburg, Ohio. Every day I know there is shoulder work ahead for me.

Both physical and emotional stresses often root into the shoulders. Imbalances here can lead to headaches, numbness of the arms and hands, and may even reflect long-term psychological strains. The rolled-forward posture of a person who has spent his life believing he is worthless can be a too common example of this.

(Further down, I'll give a couple of simple tips for reducing shoulder tension. Feel free to skip ahead. Points will not be deducted.)

When one shoulder is raised higher than the other, it is easy to see. This can come from over-use of one side or repetitive activities that create the imbalance, like a bowler who is constantly making a forceful movement that is one-sided.

Another cause is working at a keyboard that is resting on a surface that is too high for your body. In this case, it's possible for both shoulders to be chronically elevated, which is a little harder to notice.

A combination of moist heat, clinical massage therapy throughout the neck and shoulders, and stretching can help high shoulders to lower, relieving the discomfort.

Military shoulders, as the name suggests, give a person the posture of standing at attention. There is an over-emphasis on sticking the chest out, and a rigidity in the shoulder girdle that often comes with this condition. Because of this backward "roll" of the shoulders, tension of chest muscles overlying nerves can actually entrap nerves, which creates numbness or tingling sensations in the arm.

With massage, we can carefully release soft tissues of the chest, especially the small pectoralis minor muscle, which is key in treating this condition. Likewise, attention is required on the upper back, directly opposite the chest. These muscles between the shoulder blades get into a tug of war with the chest, and the person's body becomes a constant battlefield. Massage and proper stretching that gradually loosens both sides eases compression on nerves and puts an end to the battle, tug-of-war, or (insert metaphor here).

If you happen to have tight or stiff shoulders, without severe pain, one the following simple shoulder-openers could be helpful to you. There are a lot of other good stretches and yoga asanas you can benefit from, but these can be a good start and focus on the chest:

For the first, you will need a rolled up blanket or two and a small pillow. The blankets should be firm enough that they won't been completely compressed by the weight of your body. Place your rolled blankets on the floor and lie atop them so that they intersect your upper back. (Blankets are perpendicular to your spine, not running in the same direction.)

Place the small pillow under your neck, so it is not hyperextended or uncomfortable. Stretch out both your arms and lay them on the floor so you are making a "Y". The hands are palm up.

Say, "ahhhhhhhhh."

Lie in this position and breathe normally, but let your mind stay with the movement of your breath. As long as you are comfortable, stay like this for about 2 minutes. If there is discomfort which you can't quite adapt to resolve, carefully roll out of the position.

Don't force it.

Number two is deceptive in that it looks easy, but can be an intense stretch. Find a section of wall without pictures or anything else hanging on it. Stand with the side of your right hip against the wall. Raise your right arm so it is pointing skyward, with the right palm flat against the wall. Your right armpit should be facing the wall if you are in the correct position.

Now for the stretch. Imagine your right arm is the arm of a large clock and is now at 12 o'clock. You are going to move from here down to 6. Keeping your palm in contact with the wall and keeping your arm straight, slowly move your hand in a semicircle behind you.

Do your best to keep your shoulders pointing forward - don't turn your torso towards the wall. (If this is too challenging, you can start over with your body a few inches away from the wall.) Each time you reach a point of resistance or tension, stop here for one or two breaths, allowing yourself to relax as much as possible. When you are done, switch sides.

This can be a great supplement to massage therapy treatments.

Professional Ethics For Massage Therapists - A Tool For Personal Growth


Most massage therapists receive Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice from various sources. These lists of guidelines and rules are helpful in setting the professional standards for massage therapy. Yet, the "rules" can be slightly different from one organization to another and, like anything in life, external rules need to be supported by internal values to be successful. When we notice ourselves in the gray areas where the rules don't seem to work, it's a good time to look inward to see what's going on.

Take, for example, the rule "don't accept gifts from clients." A lot of times we will ask, "why not, what's wrong with that?" or "do we really want to become so impersonal that we can't accept a gift?" Good questions. In a situation where a client is offering a gift and we recognize the standard of not accepting gifts, yet we want to anyway, it's time to look at ourselves. Is the desire to accept the gift based upon our perceptions of what the client needs to enhance the therapeutic relationship? Is it based upon our own needs to feel special, appreciated, or wanted? The notion that if our motivations are client based it's less of an ethical dilemma than if they are personally based may or may not apply in all situations.

So this rule ("don't accept gifts") is pointing to the emergence of transference and countertransference issues, which are rich ground for healing. When we delve into our countertransference, we often discover unmet needs, unexplored fears and desires. This is healing because when we bring them to consciousness, we have the ability to grow and transform.

While ethical dilemmas usually aren't very comfortable, if we approach them with the willingness to look inward, we can bring a lot of healing to ourselves--a true gift!

How to Permanently Relieve Body Aches and Pains


As you get older, are you finding that your muscles hurt more? Your bones creak and your back aches. You wake up every morning and it becomes a struggle to get out of bed and the daily doses of aspirin just aren't cutting it to get rid of the pain anymore.

Heck, you're probably saying that same old worn out statement, "It's hell gettin' old." And those words can be uttered no matter whether you're 2 or 102... or any age in between.

Would you take offense if I used the pun... "I feel your pain?"

I hope not because the truth is that I do. In fact, many people do. But the thing that you probably don't realize is that you can get rid of the body pain you're feeling with rehabilitation physical therapy.

A great deal of the pain and suffering you're feeling is coming from some common ailments that are easily fixed. They are handled by addressing the true cause behind what is causing them in the first place. And the healing process itself requires no invasive procedures.

The best way to get rid of the aches you're experiencing is through rehabilitation physical therapy. It's physical therapy that is done to help rehab the joints and muscles that are causing the pain. But it focuses on the crux of the problem, not just providing a temporary relief by treating the symptom.

You may be wondering what is meant by that. Here's the deal.

Do you have a stiff neck or are there other muscles that seem to move, but only with a limited range and with a lot of pain? Well, there are two ways you could handle this issue. Ice and heat the inflexible muscles for temporary relief. Or... you can address the underlying cause of the problem and get more permanent pain relief.

In addressing the underlying problem via rehabilitation physical therapy, you'll likely work on posture issues. Poor posture leads to stiff and sore muscles. For example, a long term hunched back will cause a great amount of strain on your neck. It can place your head in an unnatural state thereby putting your neck muscles in a position they are not familiar with.

Another cause of these problems could very well be an imbalance of strength in your muscles. Inflexible muscles in your chest (pecs) and weakened muscles in your back cause your shoulders to come together, out of proper alignment, in the front of your body. This too places an unnatural pull on your neck muscles.

It can also fix muscle imbalances by lengthening in the tight muscle and strengthening the weakened muscle which too creates a more natural state for your body and places less pull on your muscle.

Gait Training Physical Therapy


Many people believe that since walking is something that they have been doing for most of their lives, no one needs to teach them how to walk again after an injury. Unfortunately, most injuries to the spine and lower extremities do alter walking mechanics and can lead to additional disability if not corrected with physical therapy and fitness training. With or without injury, gait (walking mechanics) frequently deteriorates with age....not necessarily because of age, but most often due to getting weaker.

What is gait? Gait is a manner of walking, stepping or running. More specifically, it is a series of rhythmical, alternating movements of the trunk and limbs which result in the forward progression of the center of gravity (body). Another way to think of gait is as a series of "controlled falls".

How is gait evaluated? We visually observe patients walking on a treadmill or up and down a long hallway. A treadmill allows us to precisely control speed and to observe close-in. If necessary, patients can also be recorded on video while walking/running. The video can then be slowed down, reversed, and repeated as needed during a physical therapy session to perform a more detailed assessment of gait.

Some of the things we look for during a gait evaluation are symmetry of the gait cycle, step and stride length, cadence, and walking base. Symmetry is one of the most important aspects of gait. The movement of one side of the body should mirror the other side of the body. Arm swing, foot placement, step length, foot impact should all be very similar right vs. left.

Injuries and or weakness often lead to heavier impact (usually, but not always) on the opposite side. Since the average human takes 10-15,000 steps each day, increasing the impact of one foot by a force of just 10 lbs (each step) can add up to a lot of extra stress being added to that leg (upwards of 75,000 lbs) every day. No wonder "bad" walking mechanics eventually lead to more injuries.

Another common gait deviation is foot placement. If a patient is having difficulty controlling where the foot is landing (for example: too close to the other leg, turned out/in), they may have significant hip muscle weakness or neurological issues.

The vast majority of gait deviations can be corrected or compensated for with proper physical therapy and fitness training. Most physical therapists are experts in gait evaluation and training. Left untreated, significant gait deviations can lead to injury. Taking that first step, and getting a gait evaluation, could be a step in the right direction for better health.

Ohio Massage Therapy Licensure Exam - What Should You Expect?


If you know "what you are getting yourself into" when approaching this exam, you are likely to have a more successful outcome. To be licensed to practice massage therapy in Ohio, a person must pass the State of Ohio Medical Board Exam for Massage Therapy. What's this exam like? What should you expect?

#1 Expectation: Currently you can only take the State of Ohio Medical Board Exam for Massage Therapy twice per year.

This paper-and-pencil exam is given in June and December of every calendar year. It is held at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. There are usually about 700-1000 other people "sitting" for the exam with you.

#2 Expectation: The exam will be divided into two parts: basic sciences and limited branch content.

The first part of the exam is 110 multiple choice questions on the basic sciences, in other words, anatomy and physiology. The majority of the questions will be about the musculoskeletal system with a fair percentage on the nervous and cardiovascular systems and the skin. The limited branch part of the exam, the second part, is also 110 multiple choice questions. The emphasis is on massage techniques, therapeutic applications and effects of massage.

A person taking this exam is given two hours and twenty minutes to complete each part.

#3 Expectation: Your score on the exam will be posted approximately six weeks after you have taken it.

There is a meeting on the second Tuesday of the month of the committee which reviews the results of this exam. Once this meeting occurs and the list of persons passing and not passing this exam is accepted, you will receive your results. Your score on each part of the exam will usually be received by postal mail on the Friday or Saturday after this Tuesday meeting. You can actually learn earlier about whether or not you passed this exam by calling the State Medical Board Office (on Thursday) and inquiring or going to their web site at http://med.ohio.gov/mt_about_massage_therapy.htm

#4 Expectation: You must pass both parts of the State Medical Board Exam for Massage Therapy to be licensed to practice in Ohio.

The passing score is 75%. You must have this score on both parts of this exam in order to receive your license. If you don't pass one part, you must re-apply to take the part you did not pass. The next opportunity to take the exam is either the next June or December date.

A person who doesn't pass a part of the exam after three attempts must take additional coursework in the basic sciences (35 hours) or limited branch content (40 hours) at a school that provides the Certificate of Competency (see the State Board web site). After completing the Certificate of Competency for each part of the exam previously failed, a person is eligible to re-take it.

Being successful in any endeavor requires knowing what you are getting yourself "in to"! The Ohio Massage Therapy Exam is unique. Other states often require the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork to practice massage. The Ohio massage therapist can only be licensed through the State of Ohio Medical Board and only through passing this exam.
