Massage Therapy Popularity

The stresses of life whether good or bad, more times than not, accumulates itself into some form of physical pain. Massage therapy has been proven to bring a high level of relief from pain. This fact is sparking a wave of massage therapy popularity.

The U.S. Department of Labor has estimated a growth of 20 percent for employment in massage therapy from the years 2006 to 2016. The number of individuals who received the therapy increased from 91 million in 1999 to 136 million in 2003. These numbers are proof that more people want the therapy, which in turn is making schooling options rise in popularity and more of them are appearing throughout the country.

In 2009, all but eight states offered licensure requirements, meaning that in those states the therapy is regulated on a local level. In the current job market more than half the therapists use massage as a second income to their primary source of income. Being a therapist allows individuals to do this because they make their schedule and choose to provide services in:

  • their own home

  • salon

  • spas

  • offices

  • health clubs

The health benefits and the effectiveness of a massage to relieve pain are being pushed by more doctors annually. The number of hospitals who offer the therapy rose 30 percent from 2004 to 2006. The rise in attendance to schools is a direct correlation of the fact that more and more people want and are enjoying massages. This correlation will continue to grow as more individuals gain a certificate and more schools offer this program.

With more individuals wanting and needing the therapy, the number of therapists will have to increase at the same rate. These facts will also make it possible for many therapists to use this as their primary source of income. In every aspect of the business consumers are satisfied and turning to this therapy for pain, stress, and pleasure. This is also having a direct impact on the number of people wanting to become therapists and the number of schools implementing this certificate into their overall course work.

Consumer confidence is steadily rising from the continued health benefits of alternative healing training that prepares students for massage in their health care regimen. In 2005, 21 percent of consumers surveyed by the American Massage Therapy Association stated they discussed the therapy with their doctor. With even more support now for the benefits of massage, jobs and natural healing training programs who offer the opportunity to gain a certificate won't slowly fade but rapidly grow.

Jobs will be increasing for therapists in the health care field every year, but outside of the health benefits massages are extremely popular for relaxation and pleasure. Resorts, spas, cruise ships, and vacation hot spots all offer this as a perk to have while getting away from the office and the stresses of life.

Massage is dipping its toes in every aspect of life from health, to fun, to relaxation, and pleasure. The popularity will continue to rise and as a result more accredited schools of massage therapy will offer training. The Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (http://www.comta.org/) accredits programs that can give students the quality training they deserve. The correlation is positive and will equip any individual with the skills to turn their passion into a career.

4 Key Questions To Ask Cosmetology School Enrollment Counselors

Many people are drawn to cosmetology, even if they may not realize it at first. Many girls help their friends with make-up applications, or give them a special hairdo whenever they go to parties. They like to give their friends and relatives manicures or massages whenever they can.

If you are one of these people - this field is open to both male and female students - you should consider signing up at a cosmetology school in Columbus TN. At an established beauty institute, you will receive the education and training you need to work as a professional in the field. Imagine, getting paid for doing what you really love!

To establish a career as a beautician, you will have to attend a cosmetology school in Columbus TN. You will have to successfully complete the programs to obtain the necessary licensing and certification. That should be no problem, if that is the career path you really want to establish.

Cosmetology courses are necessary, because they prepare students for the cosmetology examination, and will provide them with the necessary qualifications they need to work as a cosmetologist. Prior to their enrollment, students interested in a cosmetology school in Columbus TN should ask the following questions:

1. Is this facility fully accredited? Schools that obtained the accreditation status have met the minimum basic standards set forward by the Department of Education.
2. What kind of training can I expect? Aside from theoretical programs, you should also receive hands-on training. You need the experience to practice what you have been taught.
3. Can I select my career path? Find a cosmetology school in Columbus TN that has such an extensive program that you can actually study the cosmetology fields you are interested in.
4. Do you offer job placement opportunities? Even if a school cannot provide employment for all their students, they should at least give them the necessary skills to find work. This includes filling out job applications, finding open positions, how to start a cosmetology business, and much more.

If the answers you receive from the counselor are not satisfying, look for a premium cosmetology school in Columbus TN that is able to provide you with the all-inclusive training you need.

Physical Therapy Assistant Training Information

Becoming a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) is an excellent career choice for anyone interested in entering the healthcare services industry in a very hands-on type of position, where you will work with people one-on-one every day.

Also called Physiotherapy Assistants, anyone with qualifying physical therapy assistant training will have the important role of assisting a licensed Physical Therapist in treating patients who are suffering from countless types of injuries or disabilities due to illness, or who are otherwise in need of physical therapy. It is a necessary and highly valued profession, with job numbers having almost doubled in the past few years.

What is Involved in the Training?

In the US, in order to become a physical therapy assistant it is generally recommended that individuals enroll in an Associates Degree program that will prepare them for this profession, and also for taking the required exams to receive their PTA.

Currently it is not required that students have an Associates Degree, but the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), as well as a number of other professional groups, indicate that employment is moving toward all PTAs having an Associates Degree, possibly within the next few years.

In order to obtain PTA certification, course work, externships and the passing of the required exam is necessary. Current college curriculum study courses include the following, as well as additional topics as necessary by a specialty area: Anatomy, Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Neuroscience, Clinical Pathology, Kinesiology, Biomechanics and more.

Interestingly, in the UK, which usually seems to have more stringent medical worker requirements than the US, there are no specific requirements in order to become a physiotherapy assistant at basic level other than having passed 4 or more GCSEs.

This base position is less technical however, than its more advanced progression, the assistant practitioner. Assistant practitioners are senior physiotherapy assistants, and generally specialize in a certain area of physiotherapy.

Obtaining a position as an assistant practitioner involves a certain amount of work experience, as well as other qualifications like NVQ III or BTEC diploma or in some cases a higher educational degree. The requirements vary by specialty, which can include radiology, podiatry, nursing, stroke and other medical areas requiring physical therapy.

Employment for Those with training

A physical therapy assistant has the opportunity to work in a variety of positions and facilities dependent on experience and certification (where required).

More medically-oriented positions are available at hospitals, outpatient practices, rehabilitation facilities, hospices and companies that provide home nursing care just to name a few. Additionally, assistants are required at sports training and fitness centers, schools, and even in some industrial working environments if a company provides some of its own, on-site medical and physical therapy care.

The people with which PTAs will work with is dependent on position of course, but in general, PTAs are closely involved with therapy and hands-on treatment that has been prescribed by the licensed physical therapist.

It is the job of the PTA to help patients achieve their therapy goals, whether within a session, a period of treatment, or throughout their lives. PTAs are also many times responsible for discussing all treatments with patients once they have been prescribed, and recording progress, and other recordkeeping.

Salary On Experience

There is a fairly broad range when it comes to salary for people with physical therapy assistant training, largely dependent on certifications, and job duties. In the US, PTAs in various positions and titles earn a low of about $25,000 per year for entry level, non-certified physical therapy aides while certified PTAs earn up to $51,000 per year or more.

In the UK, physiotherapy assistant salaries range between 瞿20,000 and 瞿40,000 per year, depending on years of experience, and whether or not the physiotherapy assistant is qualified and in an assistant practitioner position.

As it is hopefully obvious, it is important that someone desiring a career as a physical therapy assistant enjoy working in close contact with people and have an understanding, agreeable personality.

Individuals should also be strong and fit themselves, at least enough that they can assist other patients, and they should have compassion. With these qualities, as well as the required education and training, becoming a PTA can be an extremely enjoyable and personally satisfying career choice.

Finding the Right School for Physical Therapy Education

Due to the continued increase in the number of accidents happening today, the need to have qualified physiotherapists has become extremely critical. People sustain serious injuries during sports, road accidents, and other emergencies that occur at home. If these injuries do not get the right form of treatment, they can easily develop to serious medical conditions that can in turn cause permanent deformity. It is therefore important for people to learn how they can handle such cases because you never know they will occur to you or the people close to you. To become a professional physiotherapist, you need to get the right training. Thus you need to look for the right school for your physical therapy education.

To tell you the truth, finding a credible institution that offers quality training in physical treatment is not an easy task. This is so because there have emerged a number of institutions that offer programs that are below the acceptable standards. If you are not careful, you will easily fall prey to these unscrupulous trainers. That is why you need to learn how to find reputable schools offering physical therapy education. The best way to achieve this is to understand the various important steps to finding the right institute for your training.

Steps to Finding the Right School for Your Physical Therapy Education
• Research: As you embark on the task of finding the right place to pursue your physiotherapy course, you need to do a thorough research on the various aspects of such training. For instance, you need to decide what specialization you are going to pursue. It is also important that you understand what your country or state provides on such training. You can also research on the accredited organizations that offer such courses. The good thing is that the internet provides a long list of such training centers.
• Specialization: Physiotherapy training is a bit diverse and it will take you a lot of time to cover the various fields of study. Therefore, you have to choose what specialization you are going to pursue. This will, in turn, simplify your search for the right training center since you will only focus on those that offer such programs.
• Read reviews: Before you make your final decision, you need to go through the reviews of the training center you wish to register with. The reviews will give you an idea of what to expect from the center.

Now that you understand what you should look out for in the school that you intend to join for your physical therapy education, it is important that you consider the online training centers because they are more convenient.

Massage Therapist Tools

When you think of some massage therapist tools what are the first images that come to your mind? Do you think of tools that are used instead of hands such as a back or a neck massager, body and foot rollers? Well there are other tools such as portable massage chairs and desktop massage support where you still get to use your hands.

There are also other ways for massage therapists to use tools that will help them give clients an enjoyable massage. Tools such as good advertising and promotion. Tools such as directories that list massage therapists are extremely profitable because they advertise your business. They are actually more effective than one might think. I had a friend who placed his information on a directory featuring massage therapists and in a week he got a response in the email from a couple who wanted his services. He was surprised because he didn't think he had enough credentials and he certainly didn't put his whole life story in his listing.

Some massage therapists use other tools that will no doubt help your business, but a combined effort of both advertising and additional tools will help in both boosting your presence on the web and giving your clients the best work you can. Portable massage chairs give a chance for the therapist to come to the client. It is a very effective massage therapist tool to use and for marketing. If your clients know you have a portable massage chair they'll be more willing to hire you as their massage therapist because they know they don't have to go to a new location because you can just come to them.

A desktop massage support is exactly like a portable massage chair. It's easy to carry, and you can take it anywhere and everywhere. It gives your client head and neck support while you get to massage their upper half. The main differences between a desktop massage support and portable massage chairs are that a portable massage chair is stronger and it can also be used to support to a client's lower body weight so you can also work their upper body and lower body.

Massage therapist tools are good for advertising and using in a massage therapy session in order to boost your presence in your community or on the web and also to maximize your business potential. I hope these tools will work for you and your business.

Physical Therapy Assistant Salary Information

Physical therapy has become an important addition to medical treatment over the last few decades. This has been facilitated by development of modern techniques which make therapy more productive and effective than in the early 20th century.

This has metamorphosed into an influential industry as the ageing population of baby boomers increases resulting onto more health demands. CNN Money in 2010 rated the medical profession as the 2nd most popular professions out of 100 and as a physical therapy assistant, you will definitely be joining this prestigious class of professionals. As such, understanding the salary becomes imperative to help you take the next step.

US BLS has reported for several years that health related professions have been the fastest growing and according to IBIS World survey of 2011, the physical therapy industry is set to grow by 5.1% annually from 2007-2017 and this highlights the opportunities that exist for anyone strategizing on joining the broad and highly prospective profession.

If you are like most people intending to join a new career, you might be wondering about a physical therapy assistant salary. There are some pertinent issues that are crucial in not only determining the salary but also the general outlook of the profession.

Assistant Roles

Physical therapy assistants (PTAs) help physical therapists to provide the necessary treatment to patients through rehabilitative activities, procedures and technologies.

The main goal in this kind of treatment is to reduce pain and increase mobility to enable patients to go about their day to day life with minimal or no physical assistance. As a physical therapy assistant, you will be working under supervision of certified therapists to provide massage, paraffin baths, electric stimulation, and traction and ultrasound treatment among other procedures recognized in the industry.

Another critical role will be in observation and recording of a patient's reaction to treatment over time and reporting the same to the therapist for further action. Additionally, you will be expected to provide education to both the family and patient about use of any appliances to help increase mobility and reduce pain. In most situations, you will work patients involved in accidents, those who suffer from neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy and arthritis among others.

An Exegesis on Physical Therapist Assistant Salary

According to the US BLS the annual median pay for a licensed physical therapist assistant is $46,683 but this is a very general way of looking t the profession in terms of pay.

This is because a lot of contingent factors determine the pay and these include training, the workplace, experience and even certification. For starters, most employers require a 2 years Associate Degree focusing on areas such as anatomy, psychology, physiology, CPR and a practical part which is the most essential in giving you hands-on experience.

Job experience is considered the most instrumental factor in determining a physical therapy assistant salary.

However, you should also ensure that any program you enroll to has accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) to ensure you get licensed to practice in your state and exams such as the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) and Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) are essential in getting professional licensure and thus improving your salary.

If you want better pay, you can also specialize in therapy areas such as geriatric and pediatric care, neuromuscular therapy, and musculoskeletal therapy among other areas. Such kind fields require advancement in education levels to Masters or even Doctorate again improving your value in the market.

Other factors that determine the salary include the kid of facility you work in. There are many private nursing facilities in the country and they pay higher salaries than public facilities, however, you can also opt to work in a clinic and still get better pay depending on the geographical location especially if you are offering services in affluent urban suburbs. At an entry level you will find that outpatient services are the most popular position and the pay is not very high.

Though the industry has immense benefits especially in the attractive physical therapy assistant salary, this should not be the only reason for joining the profession. You must be dexterous, detail oriented, outgoing and approachable and also possess interpersonal skills.

You should also be passionate about health care to succeed. As the BLS has indicated the profession is to grow by 45% from 2010 to 2020, there is no doubt your physical therapy assistant salary will increase and it is no brainer that this is a motivation.

Is Massage Safe During Pregnancy?

Massage during pregnancy is usually safe when administered by a trained therapist. Your therapist will have you fill out a health information form to make sure that she is aware of any health concerns. There are some precautions that therapists take with pregnant women, for instance there are pressure points which can cause contractions that your therapist will avoid if you are pregnant. Also, we avoid deep abdominal pressure during pregnancy. If you have any doubts about receiving a massage simply check with your doctor or midwife at your next prenatal appointment.

Generally, you should not receive massage if you currently have:

  • Fever

  • Vomiting

  • Heavy discharge or bleeding

  • Deep vein thrombosis

  • Threatened Miscarriage

Ask you doctor or midwife before receiving a massage if you have:

  • Preeclampsia

  • Incompetent Cervix

  • Preterm Labor

  • High Risk Pregnancy

Okay, so if massage is safe for you and you schedule your appointment what happens in the session? What do you do about your big belly?

Some massage therapists have wonderful special body cushions or tables that allow you to rest face down without putting pressure on your abdomen. If your therapist does not have this type of cushion she will have you lie on your side, draped under sheets and blankets for the massage. You will supported with pillows to ensure your comfort. Generally the therapist will perform a full body massage treatment for an hour long appointment unless you request otherwise. The therapist will focus on helping you relax and bringing relief from any discomfort or pain you may have been experiencing prior to your massage.

Finding a therapist that's right for you can take some time. Here are some questions you can ask when you are looking for a massage therapist:

  • Are you Nationally Certified?

  • Are you a member of a professional organization?

  • Where did you go to school? How many hours was your program?

  • Do you give pregnancy massages?

  • Did you receive training in pregnancy massage?

  • Do you require a doctor's permission before performing pregnancy massage?

Then go and enjoy your massage and all the benefits of relaxation and pain relief that it brings you.

Massage For Healing Before and After Having Surgery

When your doctor mentions that you need to start preparing for surgery, I will venture a guess that you will not think of massage as one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. Well, you are not alone in this thinking and that is unfortunate because the healing benefits of massage are vast.

Massage therapy is useful for endless conditions including insomnia, muscle pain, anxiety, circulatory problems, and recovery from injury or before and after having surgery.

Even self-massage techniques that target reflexology points in the hands and feet, affect the head, neck, sinuses, in addition to many other parts of the body and organs that are beneficially affected. Massage is particularly effective when used as part of preparing for surgery and the recovery from surgery, particularly bone or muscle reconstructive surgery.

Before surgery, massage can relieve much of the anxiety and tension associated with the anticipation of having surgery. Massage helps the patient feel less stressed and lowers the patient's expectations for pain. This lowering of stress promotes a general sense of well-being that enhances the patient's ability to heal quicker and with fewer complications.

After surgery, massage therapy is a great addition to or even a substitute for other pain and recovery treatments, such as pain medication, which can sometimes cause unpleasant side effects. There are several reasons why massage is beneficial after surgery. For one, massage improves the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid throughout the body, allowing for increased oxygenation of the body's tissues and organs and reduction of swelling and stiffness. Additionally, the simple fact that human touch, something we all need and benefit from, is involved in massage therapy and accounts for much of its physical and mental healing qualities.

Listed below are some of the most valuable health benefits and effects of massage as it applies to surgery.

- Helps to reduce edema or fluid accumulation
- Reduces swelling
- Reduces or relieves pain
- Increases flexibility of tissues
- Increases mobility
- Reduces stress and tension
- Increases body awareness
- Promotes relaxation
- Enhances immune functions and improved cell functions
- Lowers the production of the hormone Cortisol (also known as the stress-hormone)

Even though the benefits of massage are immense, there are a couple of main reasons why massage therapy is not widely used or recommended by doctors. One reason is many insurance plans do not cover the cost of massage therapy. Another is because massage is often regarded as an unsophisticated, insufficiently researched treatment.

However, people have benefited greatly from massage before and after having surgery and practitioners of massage therapy endorse it as one of the most effective and pleasant healing modalities available to modern medicine.

With benefits like the ones listed above, you may want to consider incorporating therapeutic massage into your preparing for surgery plans.

Massage Therapy Jobs - A Career Worth Pursuing?

I should have married a massage therapist. Don't get me wrong, I love my wife; but how amazing would it be to have that kind of expertise at your disposal each and every day? Of course, there's no telling what the quality of your massage would be compared to your therapist spouse's customers; they are after all, paying for the service. So what goes into being a massage therapist? How the pay is and what kind of training do you need? Let's find out!

It's All About the Money

Back in the days of me being an EMT, I was required to briefly touch people. Having a job where your only requirement is to touch people on a personal basis; I'd need a lot of money to do that. Fortunately for massage therapists, the average annual intake can be around $43,000. This all depends of course on in what capacity you choose to work as a therapist. Right now, the massage industry is said to be booming so it could be a good time to get in on the ground floor if you already haven't. Of course, it's not as simple as walking out the door and saying "I'm a massage therapist now." No. There is training and required certification to be considered.

Licensure and Laws

Currently, the District of Columbia and 37 states require licensing to work as a massage therapist. There are two types of national certification exams and transferring your license from one state to another state is pretty much determined on a state to state basis. Some require retesting, some will transfer with no obligations and some are decided on a case by case decision. There are several categories in which you will need to be knowledgeable:

繚 Professional ethics, legal practices, professional standards and general business
繚 A basic knowledge of the body
繚 Therapeutic massage application
繚 Detailed knowledge of physiology, anatomy and kinesiology
繚 Therapeutic massage assessment
繚 Pathology

If you are nationally certified, you are required to renew that certification every four years. Options for recertification include retesting or a 50-hour refresher course and 200 hours of therapeutic massage experience throughout the four year period.

So You Say You Want the Job?

Even though the industry is, as I said, supposedly booming right now, positions are curiously hard to come across. Maybe it's the evenings and weekends required. Of course, starting your own business is always an option, but that's usually a little further down the line. There are so many facets of massage therapy, including but not limited to:

繚 Hospital massage therapist
繚 Physical therapy/rehab massage therapist
繚 Spa or health club massage therapist
繚 Chiropractic massage therapist

You will also be amazed that there are actually over 160 methods of massage. The Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, hot stone massage (highly recommended), acupressure and Thai massage are only a few of those available.

The benefits of getting a massage from a qualified massage therapist are too numerous to mention. The benefits to those who choose to pursue massage therapy jobs are probably not as many. But if you can get into a stable place of employment and possibly break out on your own eventually, the job of massage therapist can be rewarding and even truly profitable.

Frozen Shoulder Manipulation - Snap, Crackle, Pop

Of all the treatment options available for a stiff arm, a frozen shoulder manipulation is the one that is feared the most by patients with this condition. As a clinician I'm often asked if this will cure the symptoms, to which I quickly reply "It depends". The consensus among most medical professionals is that aside from surgery, a manipulation should be one of the last courses of action.

To begin with, even though it is a closed procedure (non-surgical), a manipulation under anesthesia is traumatic to the shoulder's joint capsule and soft tissue structures in and around the shoulder complex. In theory the clinician is trying to break loose adhesions that have formed around the capsule, thereby freeing up motion in the shoulder. What happens in some cases though is actual tearing of the capsule itself. Motion is restored, but as the body begins to repair the area it lays down more scar tissue which can potentially cause more loss of motion and pain. This means the patient must undergo additional physical therapy to prevent further loss of motion.

When considering to undergo this type of treatment the patient must also account for other factors which prevent a manipulation from the the best course of action. For instance, if the patient has a history of osteoporosis, there is an increased risk of sustaining a fracture as the arm is carried through various ranges of motion. Also, because of the sudden high velocity stretching, there is a small risk of developing a brachial plexus injury, which is basically an injury to the nerves that pass through the shoulder. Even rotator cuff tears have been documented after a procedure such as this. A skilled orthopedic physician specializing in disorders of the upper extremity can determine a patient's risk for the above.

After the procedure is performed physical therapy must be initiated immediately, as soon as day one after the manipulation in order to maintain any motion that was restored. Ideally the patient should attend PT daily for the first week to control swelling and prevent further loss of motion.

As one can see, a frozen shoulder manipulation is a serious consideration and should be done only after conservative measures fail. Adhesive capsulitis treatment requires persistence, patience, and dedication to achieve full and productive range of motion and function.

Frequent massage chair therapy helps to improve the circulatory flow. The stimulation of muscles and other tissues in the body helps it better process. Enhance circulatory flow helps you feel better and can also help to lower blood pressure and improve pulse rates. Of course, you should always check with your medical professional to make sure that a massage chair is right for your situation.

Massage chairs offer a way to relieve minor aches and pains in the body. They are especially effective in relieving stiffness due to stress or physical exertion. Many common ailments can be relieved with the stimulating and invigoration that the various massage programs in a massage chair contain.

Rehabilitation After Knee Replacement Surgery

Rehabilitation after knee replacement surgery is essential for a successful and complete recovery. Based on your specific needs, your orthopedic specialist or physical therapist would devise a suitable plan of care for you, to hasten your recovery. The physical therapist would evaluate things such as mobility, heart and lung capacity, whether any special equipment is required, and posture.

Rehabilitation Programs to Improve Muscle Strength and Range of Motion

Some of the goals of physical therapy rehabilitation services would be to:

• Build strength in those muscles that support the knee
• Maximize range of motion
• Reduce rigidity
• Prepare you for discharge

You as a patient must work diligently both with your doctor and on your own so that you see a definitive improvement.

In addition to making you perform exercises, the specialist at the physical therapy rehabilitation center may incorporate modalities such as hydrotherapy, massage, cold compression therapy, and CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) into the recovery program. Some of the exercises that your doctor would suggest for you are:

• Ankle Pumps - This exercise involves flexing your ankle up and down with your leg straight. The exercise makes possible, the flow of blood to the extremities.

• Heel Slides - In this exercise, you have to flex both your knee and hip. After this, you restore your knee to the straight position.

• Leg Lifts - This exercise increases blood flow. You have to lift your leg to a particular height off the floor or bed, keeping your knee straight.

Your physical therapist would probably tell you to incorporate these and other exercises such as quadriceps sets, knee extensions, and knee flexion stretches into your home exercise program as instructed by him.

Help You Walk with Confidence

Advanced strengthening programs during rehabilitation may include adding weights as tolerated. Walking is another important aspect of the recovery program. The majority of patients would take their first steps following the replacement surgery with the help of a walker. If you have a strong upper body and good balance, you may be able to use crutches. Whether or not you are able to progress to a cane would be determined by two factors:

• Whether or not your surgeon feels it is okay to place the entire weight on your leg during the early weeks following the surgery
• Your ability to get your strength back

If you follow your program for rehabilitation after knee replacement surgery, you can expect a complete recovery in about a year or even sooner. You would gradually be able to walk with little or no pain and return to everyday activities with total independence.

The Benefits of Remedial Massage Therapy

People do not know it but they often take their body for granted. There is no denying it but our body needs rest. True, the hands of clock do not stop and no matter what we do. We always wake up the next day with a lot of things going on in our mind and we are stuck in this routine. Sometimes things g beyond our control and we are putting ourselves in too much stress. Little do we know that as we age our body starts to deteriorate and diseases start to show up. And so in order to avoid this problem, we need to stop and listen to what our body is telling us. It may be time we get ourselves a remedial massage therapy.

Not everyone is of course familiar with what remedial massage therapy is. It is a type that involves a variety of techniques that tackle certain areas in our body that need attention. Tendon, ligament and muscles are among the few areas that are dealt with this type of therapy. It alleviates pain and promotes good circulation thus allowing the body to heal naturally. Also, one can free his mind from all the stresses as it clears the worries from his head. Tension is relieved as well so it is definitely a good way to regain your strength.

A person with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, headache, shoulder and neck tension, back and neck pain, migraines, insomnia, injury recovery, sciatica and whiplash can benefit from this treatment greatly. There are certain techniques used and among these are the relaxation massage, deep tissue massage, onsen technique, lymphatic drainage, trigger point therapy and action potential stimulator. However, it is not advisable that you go on with this treatment without consulting a physiotherapist or a doctor first. It is very important that he knows what your ailments are.

If you decide on pursuing remedial massage therapy, you should understand that a physiotherapist be informed of your medical condition. This is an example of a non invasive procedure which can treat your pain and discomfort. Plus, you have to be patient about it as what you are feeling or experiencing won't go away in an instant. Confront your therapist if you are not at ease with the pressure being applied on you. And if you are very particular with your privacy you may also request your therapist you to provide you with what you need.

The Woman Who Can Revolutionize Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy

Conventional therapies are good but not good enough.

My son Liam was diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia at ten months old. He received early intervention therapies (PT, OT and SP) from ten months old till he was two and a half years old. We saw some progress in the beginning but the developmental milestone gap widen as he approached his second birthday. He happily participated in most of his therapy sessions, but we noticed strange habits forming like knee locking after a few months of therapy. This was brought to the attention of his therapist and a series of exercises were assigned to help with the knee locking. We tried the suggestions but we didn't see any changes.

When I first learned about the Anat Baniel Method (ABM) I asked my son's doctors and therapists if they were familiar with this therapy and the answer across the board was no.

The Anat Baniel Method for Children has been around for over ten years. The method evolved from the groundbreaking work invented by Moshe Feldenkrais. The ABM for Children method was the brain child of Anat Baniel. Her method found an effective and efficient way to communicate with the childs' brain. The method creates a brain that learns, it transforms the body, the mind and the spirit. Some kids if seen early enough by ABM practitioners no longer suffer from their brain injury. The Anat Baniel Method for children has been so effective that the brain absorbs the injury.

The Anat Baniel Method is endorsed by leading brain plasticity researcher and neuroscientist Dr. Michael Merzenich. The co-founder of Fast ForWord. The Fast ForWord software program has helped many children overcome learning deficiencies by targeting the temporal processing area of the brain.

Anat Baniel's groundbreaking work with special needs children was published in multiple professional trade magazines. There are numerous parental testimonials that state how this method transformed the lives of their children when doctors or other medical professionals told them there was no hope. There is scientific proof that the Anat Baniel Method works.

This excerpt is from Norman Doidge's book, The Brain That Changes Itself

"In the course of my travels I met a scientist who enabled people who had been blind since birth to begin to see, another who enabled the deaf to hear; I spoke with people who had had strokes decades before and had been declared incurable, who were helped to recover with neuroplastic treatments; I met people whose learning disorders were cured and whose IQs were raised; I saw evidence that it is possible for eighty-year-olds to sharpen their memories to function the way they did when they were fifty-five. I saw people rewire their brains with their thoughts, to cure previously incurable obsessions and traumas. I spoke with Nobel laureates who were hotly debating how we must rethink our model of the brain now that we know it is ever changing."

What Anat Baniel figured out before the scientists

There are nine simple elements Anat identified that can be incorporated into all aspects of life that creates a learning brain. The byproduct of this new and improved learning brain is a release of inner spirit and energy that can be visibly seen and felt. Anat calls these fundamentals her nine essentials for vitality. When using any of these nine essentials, a brain MRI will show a visible change in that persons brain map. New paths have been created in the brain and a shift from impossible to possible was made. That is the goal of ABM. ABM aims for transformation.

I attended Anat's three day Move Into Life Seminar in June. A 94 year old woman attended the same workshop. She had a severe curve in her back known as kyphosis or humpback. When we met her on the first day, I only saw the top of her head when standing. Over the course of three days we listened to inspirational stories and experiences and we were guided through a series of movement exercises. On the second day this woman transformed before our very eyes. On the last day of the seminary she stood tall and proud in front of the group with a beautiful smile on her face as she shared her thoughts. She did not believe she would be able to perform the movements in class because of her curved back and arthritic knee. She made a conscious decision to change her attitude and to just go for it. As she continues with her voice cracking and tears in her eyes, she thanks Anat for what she has achieved and for the wonderful gift she has given to human beings.

Do conventional therapy methods work?

Yes and no.

Yes, if the child is almost there and they are being guided by these well intentioned therapist in the right direction.

No, because some of these guided exercises have no meaning to the children. I've seen Liam zone out, move away or cry. What is the point of propping a child up to stand when that same child does not know how to transition from sitting to standing on their own. How will this help the child walk? How does drilling the same movement or sounds over and over help him understand what it means and how to use them. It doesn't unless the child receives these signals from within their brain to initiate these movements. Then they will truly know what it feels like to be standing on their own bones.

Physical, occupational and speech therapist are the best people in the world with the best intentions and enormous patience and dedication. But something is missing from their training.

We made the decision to use ABM in lieu of physical therapy. After making this switch we saw a boy that figured out how to pull himself up to standing. Shortly after we stopped all conventional forms of therapy and we witnessed a more confident Liam taking his first three independent steps.

During our intensive lesson at the Anat Baniel Center in San Rafael, California. The first lesson Liam had with Anat was spent throwing a book on the table hard than soft. He came away with a full understanding of how he affects his environment and people by his touch.

How can we embrace the Anat Baniel Method and bring it to the mainstream?

As PTs, OTs and SPs trained in the ABM for Children method, you have the power to transform the lives of children that come to you direct or through Early Intervention programs.

As a parent of a special needs child, I encourage ever therapist (PT, OT, SP) to sign up for the continuing education classes offered for credit at Anat Baniel's center in San Rafael California. Her methods combined with a therapists dedication and efforts can bring about a revolution.

Physical Therapy Treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain

Pain affecting the lower part of the back characterizes the common condition simply called low back pain. Usually, low back pain goes away after a few days or weeks. You have acute low back pain if you have been experiencing pain for less than six weeks. However, if the pain persists for more than twelve weeks then you have a chronic condition.

Low back pain may occur suddenly or gradually. Although the lower back is the main body part affected, the pain may go into other areas of the body such as the buttocks down to the legs and feet. Strain to the muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones are the main causes of low back pain. However, what causes the strain differs from one person to another so it best to consult with your doctor.

For acute low back pain, it is important not to overexert yourself nor stay completely inactive. You may feel like staying in bed will get rid of the pain but in fact doctors do not recommend long periods of bed rest in this case. It is best to continue with your normal activities but at a gradual pace. Some exercises may not be helpful at all at the onset of pain. However, after a couple of weeks you may do some aerobic exercises. Avoid putting pressure on your lower back when you exercise.

If the pain continues for three weeks, it is best to seek professional physical therapy treatment for chronic low back pain. A qualified physical therapist is knowledgeable on the specific needs of a person suffering low back pain and will be able to design and administer individualized physical therapy treatment for chronic low back pain.

Physical therapy treatment for chronic low back pain starts with educating the patient about correct movement and posture. Some physical therapists use methods of therapy that apply heat, electric stimulation and ultrasound to the affected area. Physical therapy treatment for chronic low back pain involves specific exercises to improve flexibility and strengthen back muscles especially those that support the spine.

Physical therapy treatment for chronic low back pain may include one or a combination of any of these exercises: low-impact aerobics, swimming, biking, walking, strength training exercises on the lumbar extension, regular flexibility exercises, contraction exercises that retrains back muscles, and yoga, tai chi, or Pilates exercise programs.

According to some studies, the exercises above are some of the effective ways to treat chronic low back pain. Again, theories and approach as to what is the best treatment varies but exercise and physical therapy done with consistency and professional guidance definitely play an important role.

Why Physiotherapy Is So Important in Stroke Physical Therapy

Stroke recovery rehabilitation can be an uphill climb. After a stroke, patients can be left with paralysis, especially one-sided paralysis. Pain, as well as sensory insufficiencies, has to be dealt with. Physiotherapy is key aspect of the treatment plan.

Physical therapists begin stroke rehabilitation very soon after the stroke has occurred, while the patient is still in acute care. The physiotherapist will initially do an evaluation to establish what disabilities must be addressed during stroke physical therapy.

A few of the potential problems are: lack of strength and endurance, restricted range of movement, problems with sensation in the limbs, and troubles walking. Stroke recovery rehabilitation will focus on the problems that the patient exhibits. A strategy for treatment is then set up.

Patients will relearn to use their hands and feet that the stroke has made temporarily useless. During stroke physical therapy, it will be establish whether these limbs will reach their previous capacity. If not, the physiotherapist will educate the patients ways to manage without their full use of the extremities.

One problem of stroke physical therapy is called learned nonuse. This is when stroke patients do everything in their power to avoid using limbs that have been affected by the stroke. If left on their own, they will debilitate the limb even more by letting it atrophy through nonuse.

Physiotherapists use stroke recovery rehabilitation to make sure that patients do indeed labor to use their impaired limbs. They can do this in several of ways. Sometimes it facilitates for the physiotherapist to tap or stroke the limb they want the patient to use.

If the patient will not easily take part in vigorous of motion exercises, passive ones can be used where the physiotherapist moves the limb herself. Other times, the patient will attempt to use the affected foot but will naturally fall back on the limb that is functioning well. In this case, stroke physical therapy may involve gently limiting the healthy limbs.

It can be a difficult endeavour of stroke physical therapy to assist victims relearn switching from one task to another. This can be as a result of problems in the central nervous system. The cues to move the muscles and joints in order to change movements are slow in coming. This is why practice is so important. The more time a physiotherapist devotes in helping a patient with this, the easier it becomes.

Recent research have demonstrated stroke physical therapy can go on long after hospitalization. In the past, stroke victims were administered a short round of physiotherapy during the time they were in the hospital and for a few weeks shortly afterwards.

New studies shows that physiotherapy can promote more advanced stroke recovery rehabilitation if it is continued progressively at home. Patients will learn to walk better. They will gain strength to do daily chores. They will also achieve better posture and more balance, which can avoid falls.

Stroke recovery rehabilitation entails several of modalities, all designed to reestablish function to the patient's affected limbs. Electrical stimulation, pool therapy, and games have all been used. Stroke rehabilitation is not complete without the assistance of physiotherapy services.

The Role of a Physical Therapy Aide

A physical therapy aide is an individual who works under the direction of a licensed physical therapist. There are many job opportunities for those seeking such employment, as the need for physical therapy is continually increasing in today's modern world.

The position is a good stepping stone for those who wish to enter the field of healthcare or pursue a college education to become a licensed physical therapist.

Physical Therapy Aide

Job Description

A physical therapy aide may be called upon to perform a variety of tasks and duties, which will vary depending on the type of facility where the person is employed. Physical therapy aides are typically responsible for keeping treatment areas clean and organized and completing preparatory set up for patients' therapy. They may also assist the physical therapist with helping to move patients during therapy sessions, and be required to perform clerical duties, such as answering phones or completing insurance forms.

Numerous clinics and rehabilitation facilities require their physical therapists to maintain high productivity levels. For this reason, adjusting schedules, doing administrative work, changing linens or cleaning equipment is what the job entails. Therefore, regardless of the duties an aide is asked to perform, the main role is to ensure that the physical therapist worked for can focus his or her time on hands-on patient care. Although those working in this profession typically have little formal training, they are an important part of many physical therapy facilities and are considered valuable employees in the eyes of those for whom they work.

Regulations

Physical therapy aides are frequently mistaken for therapists or therapy assistants. This is because they often perform similar duties. Although they are legally able to perform certain functions under the direct supervision of a licensed therapist, they are not allowed to give advice to patients or make any alterations to the professional's directives.

An Ideal Foundation

As previously mentioned, an aide is typically regarded as a valuable member of most physical therapy teams. However, such positions also offer benefits to the aides themselves. For example, an aide may intend to become a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant in the future. Therefore, the position is an ideal foundation for those who are pursuing or planning to pursue a higher education.

Many degree programs require a substantial number of observation hours in a health care setting to be completed before the student's application will be considered. Often, working as an aide in a physical therapist's office will count toward these observation hours.

Average Salary

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2011 the average yearly salary of a physical therapy aide was approximately $25,000. However, there is a wide salary range associated with the position, with the lower end being $19,000 per year, and the higher end being approximately $34,000. The best-paying positions are typically those in the area of vocational rehabilitation or home healthcare.

Whether one chooses to work in this profession as a permanent career or as the first step in an ongoing career path, he or she will likely find that the job is both interesting and rewarding.

The Benefits From Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is different from the other types of massage therapies that are commonly used on massage spas all over the world. Although all have the same healing purposes, every method has their own style. The Japanese style shiatsu massage bases its healing methods on Ancient Chinese medicines such as acupuncture and acupressure. The usual kneading, effleurage, percussion and other methods of massage strokes are matched by pinching, rolling, holding, and other methods of finger pressure techniques in shiatsu massage therapy.

Another difference that distinguishes shiatsu among the others is that it targets certain meridian points similar to those of acupuncture points where they use thin needle inserted into the human body. This is done to accomplish the basic purpose of shiatsu which is to remove all blocked pathways of energy or chi to enhance its flow all over the human body.

Healing and relaxation is the main purpose of this therapeutic massage which is a common benefit from any type of massage therapy. Both physical and emotional wellness is covered by its healing purpose. Firm pressures done in deep finger pressure on the body helps in giving a complete body relaxation for the patient. Due to its purpose of unclogging any blocked pathway for a complete full circulation of chi all over the body, the patient will have benefits of freeing the body from many sorts of pain. Listed below are some of the individual benefits a patient gets after repeated or regular sessions of shiatsu massage therapy:

Back pain - acupressure on the back part of the body applied with the right pressure is a good way of relieving this pain in our body. A good shiatsu session will definitely remove back pain right after having your therapeutic massage.

Headache - is a common head pain triggered by either environmental or emotional stress. Releasing tension by addressing the problems in your body through shiatsu can save you from this annoying pain.

Stiffness of the body or muscular tension - is common after a long, stressful day from work or from experiencing pressure from your sports. Shiatsu is a great way of releasing toxins, muscle tensions, lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes that are responsible for muscle pain.

Stomach ache - shiatsu helps a lot in giving your body a good overall circulation which includes the optimal work of your digestive system.

Insomnia, Anxiety, and depression - basically, relaxing will take away insomnia and will help you get a good night rest with no worries. After a shiatsu massage session, you will feel that the toxins and tensions are removed from your body. Anxiety and depression are like headache, these emotional sufferings can be released within your system as soon as tension is released out of the body.

Increase Immunity - in shiatsu, a blocked pathway will hinder the good flow of energy on a person's body which in return lowers his or her health and will then be prone to sickness and diseases. Unblocking these pathways will strengthen and increase the immunity of a person.

What Benefits Can You Enjoy From Regular Massage Treatments?

Getting a massage at the end of each day is one of the simple luxuries of life. There are few experiences that are as relaxing and therapeutic as a good daily massage. Without a doubt, the most notable benefit of a massage is that relaxed and rejuvenated feeling that you get afterwards. It's like all the stress of the day has magically melted away and you are even able to think more clearly.

Aside from these typical benefits that we all know about, there are actually many other advantages that an efficient massage can bring you. Following are the most remarkable of these benefits:

1. Younger-looking skin. The kneading motion of a massage, especially a hard massage, is very helpful in exfoliating the skin and eliminating dead cells that clog up the pores. Furthermore, the oils and lotions that are typically rubbed onto the skin during a massage contain natural moisturizers that prevent dryness, thus helping the skin retain its elasticity and suppleness.

2. Better blood circulation. Efficient blood flow is essential to so many different aspects of health. First of all, it improves the health of your cardiovascular system and dramatically reduces the risk of stroke or heart attack. It also improves the transfer of nutrients to your various body parts, which also makes for better overall health.

3. Stronger muscles. Not many people realize it but your muscles can work so much better if they are able to relax from time to time. For sure, exercise is good for toning the muscles and keeping them strong but it is also not advisable to keep your muscles tensed and taut most of the time because this can get uncomfortable or painful. It is just as important to give them the chance to relax, which is exactly what happens during a good massage.

4. Internal body cleansing. During a full body massage, your muscles and joints become relaxed because of the properly applied pressure onto the different parts of the body. At the same time, toxins that are trapped inside your body are loosened as well so that they can be more easily and thoroughly released. The overall effect is a cleaner body and better physical health.

5. Improved lymph circulation. The many lymph nodes in your body are the ones that are responsible for secreting hormones that fight infection and that protect you against many illnesses. With regular massage treatments, the lymphatic system is boosted and becomes capable of producing these helpful hormones in greater amounts and in less time.

6. Elimination of mental fatigue. Most people are aware that a massage can alleviate physical stress. In fact, this benefit is precisely why so many people want to get a massage as often as they possibly can. But it is not only the body that benefits from a reduction of stress during a massage but the mind as well. Mental fatigue can be erased simply with a good massage treatment at the end of the day. After a one or two-hour massage, you will notice that your thinking is sharper and your power of concentration is greatly improved.

7. Happier life. Money certainly cannot buy happiness but if you spend a few dollars on a really good massage treatment, then that is a completely different matter altogether. As mentioned, a massage can get rid of stress which in turn can improve your mood and overall disposition. You won't feel too irritable and will eventually have better relationships with the people around you. When combined with a positive attitude, regular massage can certainly take you on the path to a much happier and fulfilling life.

With all these benefits, it goes without saying that everyone should try to get a massage as frequently as possible. However, it must also be understood that not all kinds of massage will be able to bring about such benefits.

First of all, the massage therapist will need to be quite adept with their hands and they should be educated on the right techniques to use that will give the best results. They should also be able to address the areas of the body that really need attention. Furthermore, the right kind of equipment, specifically massage tables, must be used in order to deliver the most advantageous results from the massage.

If you have the time and the money to spend, it would be a great idea of get a professional massage every single day after you go home from work or even shortly before you go to bed at night. In order to enjoy this experience, however, you would need to buy your own massage table so that you won't have to leave the house to get the massage and so that you can completely relax in your own home as soon as the massage is over.

What Is Purpose of Physical Therapy Clinics?

Physical therapy clinics bridge the gap between post-hospitalization and the patient's primary care practitioner. In essence, physical therapy is mainstream medicines answer to chiropractic care. Their techniques are similar, but not precisely the same.

Chiropractic care revolves around an adjustment or spinal manipulation to keep all vertebrae in the spine in correct alignment. The contention is a correctly aligned spine will encourage the body's self-healing mechanism to kick-in and provide natural pain relief.

When the physical therapist (PT) performs a manipulative thrust or spinal manipulation, it is basically to generate mobility in a taunt joint. To clarify only licensed chiropractors perform "adjustments"; whereas, a licensed PT may provide "spinal manipulation".

Most physical therapy schools in the US have now added manipulation techniques as part of their standard curriculum. In contrast, other countries have taught spinal manipulation in for decades.

After graduating, spinal manipulation is used according to the individual therapist's discretion. Otherwise, they employ mobilization techniques or passive movement to joints.

Among general procedures performed by PT's include: range-of-motion exercises, ambulation exercises, coordination exercises and muscle strengthening. One area in particular, where the therapist is a shining star is post-hospitalization care for stroke victims.

People who have suffered strokes must face a long rehabilitative road in order to reach their potential quality of life. Goals are to maintain/improve current physical condition, regain their normal function to the extent possible, relearn previous skills and learn new skills, as needed.

Rehab begins while the patient is still hospitalized and afterward, the PT strives to enhance their activities of daily living. They will also suggest ways to make the person's home environment safer.

Coordination exercises are taught to the stroke patient who is re-learning to perform simple tasks that restore balance and coordination. Simple tasks, that incorporate a group of muscles, such as picking up a pen, are done repetitively.

Osteoarthritis is a medical condition that can be helped by the physical therapist. Heat therapy may be employed to reduce stiffness and treat muscle spasms. Cold therapy helps relieve pain. To protect the joints, aids such as walkers, canes, crutches and/or splints are commonly used. Licensed therapists may also perform massage therapy with or without additional deep heat and ultrasound.

They will also assist the person with learning stretching and strengthening exercises. Correct exercises strengthen the muscles around compromised joints for shock absorption. Healthy cartilage can be better maintained through exercise.

Sports injuries benefit from therapy, such as traction, water therapy, hot and cold packs, when incorporated with therapeutic exercises.

Clinics that have trained physical therapists on staff play a valuable role in rehabilitation and maintenance of activities of daily living. Now that you know their purpose, it should remove any fear or reluctance about taking advantage of their services.

Massage at Work - Helping Companies to Engage and Motivate Their Employees

Massage therapy in the workplace is catching on across the country. There are varied ways to incorporate this workforce and management bonus. Employers who want to go the extra mile for their workers have found that massage at work benefits all levels of employees. Your company can schedule certified massage therapists to perform on site massage for weekly, bi-weekly or monthly appointments. Hectic schedules, customer demands, as well as personal stress factors, can all adversely influence a person's work day. Maladies of all kinds have been attributed to stress. Spending much time in a chair hunched over a computer can tighten muscles in the shoulders and cause discomfort. Headache often accompanies tight muscles in the neck. Working out these stiff neck and shoulder muscles can refresh creativity and attentiveness. Massage at work helps to relieve tension and stress levels, while heightening employee morale and affording an overall feeling of employment satisfaction.

Introducing massage into your workplace invites relaxation and renewal, as well as relief from pain. While heart rate and breathing slow, blood pressure is lowered and the production of stress hormones decreases. Additionally, serotonin, a chemical that has a positive affect on emotions, is increased. Once relaxation is achieved, fatigue, anxiety and even digestive disorders are alleviated. The physical manipulation of muscles increases blood circulation, which works along side the relaxation response to culminate in enhanced distribution of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. When muscle tissue relaxes, painful soreness and spasms cease.

Sometimes, nerves can be compressed when the muscles surrounding them contract. While nerves are supposed to transmit messages back and forth from the brain to the body, tightened muscles can impede the function of the nerves. When muscles are made to relax through massage, the nerves are able to perform optimally. Neurological pain signals to muscles, bones and nerves can be lessened, or even eliminated. Massage at work can also benefit deeper tissues by releasing tension in superficial layers of muscles as the whole body comes back into balance.

Corporate massage is taken very seriously by the people at Google. Their employees can't rave enough about how much they appreciate a little time off from a grueling day for an invigorating massage. (You can view a YouTube video, accessible from Google's site, praising the benefits of massage therapy.)

Absenteeism is very costly to any business. Colds, viruses, tension headaches, sciatica, all kinds of disease and malfunction of the body, can be attributed to stress. Massage at work may be helpful for many of the common causes that keep workers home when they are needed at their job on a regular work day. With decreases in pain and increased functioning of the employee's health, fewer sick days can be achieved through the regular use of massage therapy. Enhancement of the immune system and recovery from illness would go a long way toward justifying the implementation of massage therapy in the workplace.

It is not really clear how much relief can be expected with the occasional use of chair massage. But, there will be definite rewards that will be visible: the indulgence will offer your employee something new and unusual to break up the day and it is almost certain that you will earn the gratitude of your employee.

Employees who demonstrate maximum reliability, productivity and loyalty are those who appreciate the fact that the company they work for has employee well-being as a strong priority. Introducing massage at work as part of your employee benefits package not only creates a great working environment, but will also help establish your organization as an employer of choice which can help attract high caliber applicants whilst reducing employee turnover.

What is the Average Massage Therapy Salary?

All of the research I have gathered on salaries for massage therapists suggests that the average for this profession is right around $30,000 per year. While this may seem too low based on the fact that the average massage treatment costs anywhere between $40-100 an hour, it suggests that most most massage therapists only make a percentage of this amount for each client if they are serving as an employee.

This is why I recommend that massage therapists learn how to market and build a private practice that is set on their own terms. While it is true that most private practice therapists do not make more than $30,000 per year, the reason for this is simple: They just have no idea how to market their services.

There are practitioners out there enjoying 6 figure incomes, but they are much more entrepreneurially minded. They treat their practice like a business, not a hobby. They know how to market and they bring in other practitioners to share the work.

If you think about it, you would have to do about 40 massages per week to gross 6 figures in a private practice. Most practitioners can't handle this volume, as their body will shut down. It is better to work smart rather than work hard. If you want to make a high income in this industry, you'll need to diversify your income by hiring other therapists to work underneath you and by selling various products on the internet.

Otherwise, there is a good chance that your income in this profession will barely hover above the poverty level. it is great to do what you love, but if you learn to set up your practice in the right way, you can get paid very well at the same time.

Pregnancy Massage and an Appropriate Treatment

Before any massage can be administered it may be advisable for pregnant clients to obtain a doctors clearance for any therapy received. Massage can increase circulation flow which may cause dizziness and add to any existing morning sickness or other health conditions. If the client is still in the first trimester it would be important to obtain medical clearance before commencing any treatment so her doctor is aware of the treatment she will be receiving.

If the client is still very early in her pregnancy it is allowable to have her lay prone however if she doesn't find this comfortable then she may choose to lay on her side with one or two pillows positioned between her knees to keep her pelvis in proper alignment. During the second and third trimesters she will not be able to lay prone so she will need to be positioned on her side with one or two pillows between her knees to keep her pelvis in proper alignment.

Some common symptoms of pregnancy which can be treated with massage are sacroiliac pain, sciatica and fluid retention. Treatment will only be able to address these problems assuming the doctor has given the all clear to proceed and no other contraindications present themselves.

The symptoms of sacroiliac pain are often caused by traumatic injuries, biomechanical injuries, hormonal changes and inflammatory joint disease. Provided the cause of pain isn't the result of a traumatic injury or inflammatory disease then the symptoms can be treated with massage.

Before massage is applied a heat pack can be applied to the sacral area to increase circulation, relax muscle tissue and alleviate some of the sacroiliac pain. Massage can be applied to the rest of the back while the heat pack warms the area. Before using any heat the client should always be asked if they want a heat pack to be used as part of the treatment.

Massaging the shoulders and between the shoulder blades can release any muscular tension the client may be carrying due to the increase stress and tension of pregnancy. When the heat pack has been applied for around 15 to 20 minutes it can be removed and a gentle yet firm massage consisting of effleurage, petrissage and friction can be applied to the sacrum and lumber region.

Massage to the abdominal region is strictly contraindicated in the first trimester and so this area will be avoided.

Massaging the upper back, sacrum and lumber region can help alleviate sacroiliac pains, pains in the lumbar region, assist with circulation and help to relax the client. Treatment for sciatica is still required and will follow upper body treatment. Fluid retention will be alleviated during all massage so it is not entirely necessary to target that problem specifically unless it presents itself in a key area. If the fluid retention is too severe then massage is contraindicated and it is best the client speaks to her doctor about it before continuing with treatment. If severe fluid retention is isolated to one location then contraindication is specified to that area alone or as recommended by her doctor.

Treatment for sciatica involves manipulating trigger points in the quadratus lumborum, gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus. Massage to the rest of the legs can also correct any muscle imbalances that may be present which can affect the alignment of the pelvis and lumbar region. In addition to the musculo-skeletal benefits provided by leg massage; circulation will be improved in the legs and throughout the rest of the body.

While the client is receiving treatment Aromatherapy can be utilised to help her relax by using essential oils in an evaporative burner and with her permission, through a massage oil.

In the evaporative burner the ideal blend would be a combination of lavender and lemon essential oils to help with relaxation and relieve any nausea. These oils can also be used in the massage carrier oil at low concentration of around 1%. Lavender and lemon essential oils used in a carrier oil can help with fluid retention by improving circulation, can help relieve muscular aches and pains and help to create a relaxing environment.

To support the massage treatment, the client can be instructed in ways to help her while at home, at work or simply while she is out and about. This would constitute proper posture while sitting, laying and performing day to day duties. Sleeping with a pillow between her knees can also help to reduce symptoms of pain in the pelvic and lumbar regions while laying on her side.

Home massage is possible from with the help of the partner, family member or close friend. Simple effleurage and petrissage motions can be demonstrated to the individual whom will be performing the treatment to help alleviate pain and discomfort which the pregnant client might be experiencing; in the case of two partners exchanging massage, this will also create a stronger bond between the two adults and their baby.

If a pregnant client has problems with morning sickness and fatigue then she can be advised to purchase an evaporative burner and use a single essential oil or blend from the following to help with nauseous feelings: Ginger, Lemon, Nutmeg, Rosewood and Sandalwood. In addition to these oils she can also use Lavender, Tea Tree oil and/or Ylang Ylang to help her relax.

This treatment was originally designed to assist with symptoms that have presented themselves at the time of therapy during the first trimester. Future treatments will require new assessments as human physiology changes throughout a pregnancy and new symptoms may present themselves. Therefore this treatment should be adjusted accordingly when unforeseeable circumstances arise.

Recruiting Men Into Nursing Schools in Canada

Last December, journalist Kate Lunau reported in Maclean's magazine that the number of male nurses in Canada had doubled in just a decade. At first glance, this seems like a significant increase. But, as Lunau explains, this is not really the case. The increase in male enrolment at nursing schools in Canada pales in comparison to the increase in female enrolment in training programs for careers traditionally dominated by men, such as policing. Only six percent of the students enrolled in our nursing college programs are men. And yet, as Lunau explains, our country is facing a nursing shortage.

This begs the question: what can nursing schools in Canada do to attract and retain more male students?

Attracting male students to nursing college

A 2004 study by the Bernard Hodes Group on "Men in Nursing" identifies many barriers to men enrolling in nursing school, including:

- the perception that other professions are more male-appropriate

- lack of information on nursing college for male high school students

- lack of male role models in nursing schools

The study also identifies some advantages of being a nurse, which can be used to attract men to nursing schools in Canada and abroad, notably:

- stable career path (especially in the context of a looming nursing shortage)

- good salary

- flexible schedule

- good benefits

The same study also makes some concrete suggestions for selling nursing college to male youth, for example:

- organizing more field trips for high school students to hospitals and healthcare facilities

- making high school students aware of mentorship and scholarship possibilities

But there are many other ways to make men aware of the benefits of nursing college, including advertising the wide range of forms that nursing can take. Some nursing college programs have even increased attendance by raising their selection criteria. By becoming more selective, they make their programs more desirable, to both men and women applicants.

Retaining male students

Even once a nursing college has successfully attracted a male student, problems can still arise. According to one Australian study, male nursing school students are more likely to drop out than their female counterparts.

Why might the attrition rate be higher for men at nursing college? According to the same Australian study: feelings of isolation. Interview subjects reported that they sometimes felt:

- nervous about speaking up at nursing college

- excluded from certain fields of practice (maternity, pediatric... )

- concerned about the lack of male role models

Some solutions:

- make sure that male students enrolled at nursing college have a male mentor

- refrain from using gender-specific language (referring to nurses only as "she")

- control classroom dynamics to make sure that all students have a chance to speak up and be heard

- don't assume that male students are more comfortable with some things (e.g., taking off their shirt for a simulation) or less so with others (e.g., providing assistance to a labouring woman)

If nursing schools in Canada can find a way to bring up male enrollment in their programs, it just may stem the looming crisis in nursing.

How Does the Infrared Massage Bed Help Me?

Remember the last time you were sunbathing with sunscreen? Were you still hot? Of course you were because the sunscreen only stops the UV (Ultraviolet) light from hitting your skin. The far infrared waves penetrate your skin, giving you that wonderful natural warmth. Infrared light is part of the sun's invisible spectrum. One of far infrared light's characteristics is the ability to easily penetrate human tissue. When this happens, it creates a natural resonance, which has many beneficial properties.

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts. Today, the benefits of massage therapy are widely varied and broad. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions;arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, immunity suppression, infertility, low back pain, diabetes, depression and more. As millions can attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness.

For years, therapists and physicians have recommended the combination of heat and massage to ease chronic back pain, speed recovery from injuries, improve rest, concentration, and promote a general sense of well-being. The far infrared massage bed employs patented far-infrared heat strips that line the inside of the bed. The far infrared heat emitted from these strips will penetrate up to 3" into your muscles creating uniform warmth that can be felt for up to one hour after use. The bed provides a head-to-toe massage. Once you lay down on the heated massage bed, you can feel the heat travel throughout your entire body and feel it relieve all your built up tension and pain.
