What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage is one of the oldest and simplest forms of therapy, and is a system of stroking, kneading, and pressing different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate and tone the body. All cultures have their own versions and methods of working with the tissues of the body - from Lomi Lomi to Qigong to Swedish and Shiatsu. For more information on massage therapy I would recommend checking out the National Holistic Institutes's massage therapy blog: NIH Massage Blog. The use of essential oils in massage is a way to maximize the healing power of the massage itself. When combined with essential oils, a massage can have a powerful calming or energizing effect, depending on the oil chosen. In ancient Rome they used oil to cleanse the body instead of soap. We use it in our foods and diet and we are always excited to discover new uses or new health benefits of flax oil, olive oil, peppermint oil, pumpkinseed oil, fish oil, and etc. This new line in massage oil and all natural skin care products from Amega Global combines the best of both worlds of energetic medicine and natural botanical remedies.

Kids and Physical Therapy

There are many reasons as to why children may need physical therapy. It could be because they have cerebral palsy and they need physical therapy to help them move their bodies easier or perhaps they broke a leg, or they may have weak muscles somewhere in their body. Even those with brain injuries may need to see a physical therapist since the brain has a lot to do with the functioning of muscles and knowing how to do things such as sit, walk, and roll.

There are a number of different conditions and injuries that require physical therapy in children. There is even one such condition called Jumper's knee that becomes a problem for a lot of children and adolescents. If the child complains of tenderness and pain around the bottom of the kneecap, then this might be the problem. Kids who are involved in sports tend to have this problem during growth spurts. A physical therapist may use heat and ice as well as ultrasound to gain control over the pain and any inflammation. The physical therapist also works on strengthening the knee and creating a balance through exercises such as posture exercises.

However, children are always severely spraining ankles, breaking legs, arms, hands, and feet. They may pull something somewhere or tear a muscle during physical activity. All of these incidents call for some kind of physical therapy whether short-term or long-term. Physical therapy is important in children who have injured a part of their body because an injury can actually stunt growth, so it is important to make sure proper growth is inhibited by creating proper alignments and balances within the body.

Equipment

There are different types of equipment that may be used with children who are going through physical therapy. An example is a safety belt that prevents the child from falling down or stumbling when they are learning how to walk. Crutches may also be used and the child and parents will be instructed on how to use them when the child encounters such obstacles as stairs. Children may also be required to wear a safety belt while learning how to walk on crutches so they do not injure themselves further.

Other types of equipment include:

o Walkers made just for children that help them learn to walk.

o Toys such as balls, swings, benches, and slides. Toys are an important tool because it encourages the child to work their muscles through fun.

o Ultrasound devices that are used in controlling pain and inflammation.

o Therapy balls are kind of like exercise balls, but they are made in smaller sizes for children

o Therapy rolls are like long noodle type objects that the child can lean on, roll on, and simply have fun with.

o Steps, incline mats, and hurdles can create a great physical environment for a child because these objects encourage them to climb and jump.

Many of the different types of physical therapy equipment that is used promotes physical activity in some way. Then there are others types of equipment that is used in reducing pain and inflammation and helps restore a balance within the injured area. There seems to be a little something for every situation for every single age, whether it be devices to help a child walk or to rehabilitate a muscle that has been torn. With sports becoming so intense nowadays, sports injuries are very prevalent and a physical therapist is required for the healing process. Then again, children are born with conditions that physical therapy equipment can provide relief for. That is why it is important that the proper equipment be available to help these children.

Massage Therapist - Your Alternative Life Enhancer

This may seem like a tall order for massage therapists, but if you think about it, these people actually improve an individual's life not just physically, but in some ways, emotionally, and mentally as well. And when one is relieved of these problems, we can say that life is somehow enhanced.

A massage therapist undoubtedly relieves physical problems by finding the source of the pain and systematically kneading away the knots and tensions in the muscles. The massage therapist can also provide emotional healing in that through his hands, when the physical tensions are eliminated, a person's anxieties are likewise reduced.

Mental therapy would not necessarily refer to mental illness - instead, a massage therapist is more concerned with administering techniques that help enhance mental alertness. The massage therapist also aids the patient become more mentally productive because the latter gains from restful sleep after the relaxing massage.

They often work in consonance with specialists such as chiropractors, physiotherapists, and osteopaths. They can be known by different terms, such as Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) or Licensed Massage Practitioner (LMP).

A massage therapist is well-versed in the application of pressure on the parts of the body with the objective of nursing injuries, managing pain, improving blood circulation, and relieving psychological stress. Because of its many benefits, the ordinary massage came to be known as manipulative therapy or therapeutic massage.

Because of the growing popularity of massage therapists, many people often seek them out first prior to visiting their physicians - and for good reason. Due to a growing awareness of the importance of natural healing methods, many of us are now wary of taking medications that may cause countless side effects.

Massage therapists rarely dispense medication and if ever they do, those they recommend are organic balms, oils, or salves that are only topically applied. It should also be stressed that one must seek a massage therapist who is licensed. They may not be as informed as physicians, but they are educated in functional anatomy.

This is important to enable massage therapists to identify a client's pathological ailments. He needs to know the significant points in the body which are somehow connected to the root of the pain.

The massage therapist's trade is traced back to more than 3,000 years, and although this therapy is practiced the world over, it is said that the principal originator is ancient China. Today, there are many variations on the regular massage, and a massage therapist may specialize in any of the various techniques we know today.

The most popular of these are: Shiatsu massage, Thai massage, Persian massage, effleurage, and stone massage.

Massage Therapists - How to Get More Clients When You Say These Words

How many people have you spoken in casual interactions that have actually turned into clients? What did you say when someone at the party, grocery, school and public places asks you,"What do you do?" How do you answer? Do you say, "I'm a massage therapist"? Then they might reply, "Oh, where do you work?" And you go on to talk about where you work, blah, blah... Pretty boring! Pretty non-successful interaction if your goal is to get more clients and I'm guessing it's not productive.

It's really easy to get more clients if you know what to say when you meet them. We should know exactly how to respond. Get more clients when you say these words:

Now, imagine if you answered the question like this, "What do you do?" with a sentence and they responded with, "Wow! I was just thinking I needed to find a specialist like you to help me." How cool would that be?

What did you say to make the difference in their response?" Simple: How can this help me?" You responded with words that explain what problems you solve, NOT what your "title" is! Get it?

It's really amazing effect if the person you are speaking is interested with you. As we all know, people are always (consciously or subconsciously) thinking, "What in it for me?"

So when you respond with a problem-solving solution, thus, you provide people a solution to their problems, they perk up and think, hmmm... "Wow, I want to call you, may I have your card?"

To Be Able To Tell Them What Problems You Solve, You Must Create Your "Target Market Commercial":

Here is what you need to do to create your own, "Target Market Commercial". Note: Your Target Market Commercial should be no more than three sentences.

Your 1st Homework Assignment:

Determine your Target Market:

Write down your top-3 "conditions" or "problems" you most prefer to work with. Such as:

#1. Senior's Stiffness and insomnia
#2. Stress and Anxiety
#3. Pregnancy

Once you know your top 3 markets you want to target, you can now create your perfect commercial to the What do you "do" question that will appeal to these people.

Your 2nd Homework Assignment:

Write down:

#1. What each of these group's biggest "problems" are.
#2. What you do to help them with their "problem".
#3. What results they see after working with you.

When you are crafting your Target Market Commercial, weave your answers to these three questions into your sentences. Sample Scripts: Here is an example Target Market Commercial for each of my three top Target Markets (from Homework assignment #1 above) You can use these exactly, or tweak them to more exactly fit your style and market.

#1. Target Market Commercial for Seniors: "I provide massage services to seniors who have a hard time bending and reaching so they can move more easily with less pain, and continue to live independently. The massage also helps them sleep more soundly at night."

#2.Target Market Commercial for Stress and Anxiety: "I help people who are under tremendous stress from work and home-life who feel they are being pulled in a thousand directions. I give them a way to relax and de-stress every week, to focus on only themselves, without any phones, computers, or kids interrupting them. Their "de-stress sessions" help them be more productive, calm and in control when they are faced with the stressors that come up."

#3. Target Market Commercial for Pregnancy: "I help pregnant women have the most comfortable pregnancy and easy labor. Their weekly pre-natal massages help them relax, get rid of pain and reduce leg swelling. It also of course benefits their baby in utero because as their mom gets massaged, the baby gets more nourishment, and oxygen and less stress hormones!"

What Do You Do Now?

1. To begin, start with only one Target Market Commercial.
2. Write it down.
3. Practice saying your commercial so the next time you are asked about what you "do", your response will just roll off your tongue and you will be on the road to more prospects turning into clients.
4. Once you feel comfortable with your first Target Market Commercial, create the other two. By having the three Target Market Commercials, you will be able to mix and match as needed, depending on to whom you are speaking.

Of course, you won't know what the person you are speaking with might most need, but you stand a better chance of turning this person (or someone they know) into a client when you present a solution to a problem. Obviously, you can base your Commercial on a guess and respond with the Target Market Commercial you feel most accurately reflects the person you are speaking with. Again, even if you don't know your prospect's "problem", by answering in this way, you at least stimulate the conversation more than giving a simple (and boring) answer of "I'm a massage therapist"...

Why Massage Education is Deteriorating

Just by studying the surveys and reading the comments and feedback from massage therapy trainees and patients alike, you cannot help but deduce that the quality of massage education in many, if not all, areas is fast deteriorating. One online poll showed that only less than 30 percent of the survey participants thought they underwent good, reliable and effective training in their respective massage schools. Another survey showed that more than 50 percent of the total number of participants believed that their instructors fed them with more textbook knowledge rather than practical, actual techniques. A patient in Chicago, USA has complained that during her most recent massage session, the therapist rubbed a lot of oil on her body, pinched, poked and kneaded areas of her body so hard that she was left sore all over. The experience was too traumatic for her that she has already sworn off massage therapy. Such negative comments do not at all help the profession, which is supposed to have an important effect on a person's emotional, spiritual and physiological state and functions.

Experts believe that the deterioration of massage education is due to a lot of factors. For one, there are a lot of shady massage therapy schools that do not have the proper certifications. In the USA, for instance, it is highly recommended that a certain massage school has accreditation from the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB). Secondly, there are also schools that do not have enough competent teachers, most probably because they want to save on costs, or hire many teachers but only at a low rate (and an instructor who "somehow knows a little" about massage is already considered good enough).

Thirdly, most incompetent schools only offer textbook knowledge and not many hands-on, on-patient methods and skills. Of course, hands-on training is more important since it will prepare the student cum would-be therapist on what to expect in real life situations. Fourthly, there are instructors out there who either do not have enough experience or are not exactly successful in their own private practices who try and teach the art of massage to others. Remember, massage requires a high level of expertise as well as a good understanding of the challenges involved and people who have "failed" or are not practiced enough may only convey limited knowledge.

The weakening of massage education is not only bad news for accredited massage therapy schools which try very hard to follow rules and accreditation requirements and give quality education and training but also for patients who now do not have the total guarantee that their therapists have been trained the proper way and have the right qualifications. Something should be done to address this problem, if only to protect the true essence of massage and its benefits.

School Uniforms Are Ineffective

A study done by David Brunsma from the University of Missouri and Kerry A. Rockquemore from Notre Dame measured the effects of uniforms on attendance, behavior, substance abuse, and academic achievement and concluded that uniforms did not improve any of these. In their report published in the The Journal of Education Research in September/October 1998, the authors contend that uniforms may even have the opposite effect on academic achievement. They state, "Here, contrary to the expected, student uniform use actually decreases, on average, the standardized test score of these tenth graders who wear them due to mandatory school policy." Although these assertions were contested by Ann Bodine in the November/December 2003 issue of The Journal of Educational Research, where she argued that the research methods were flawed, their results are often cited by school uniform opponents, and no other formal studies support claims for either side of the debate.

Perhaps more importantly, Brunsma and Rockquemore consider other reasons schools may see a correlation between uniforms and improved test results and other benefits. They state, "What is omitted from the discourse on school uniforms is the possibility that, instead of directly impacting specific outcomes, uniforms work as a catalyst for change and provide a highly visible window of opportunity. It is this window which allows additional programs to be implemented... Requiring students to wear uniforms is a change which not only effects students, but school faculty and parents. Instituting a mandatory uniform policy is a change which is immediate, highly visible, and shifts the environmental landscape of any particular school." Whether or not school uniforms directly improve attendance, behavior, and grades is still a matter of debate.

How to Spot a Good Ashiatsu Massage Spa

Ashiatsu is a popular form of massage therapy that uses a combination of shiatsu, Swedish massage and acupressure while using the foot instead of the hands. The therapy though famous for its foot pressure, still includes hand techniques as well as the use of the knees and elbows. This technique is focused in giving complete body rest and enlightenment on the emotional state of the patient.

The key to having a good ashiatsu massage therapy and in order to receive the best result is by searching for a good massage spa that offers quality services. There are many spas that have this in their list of offered types of therapeutic massage. The hunt for a good massage spa though is quite simple and can be done by following these simple guidelines on how to spot the best massage spa for you.

You can find below a list of what you must be looking for when searching for a public massage parlor and spa:

• Environment - for a relaxing experience, the environment of the massage spa should be pleasing and quiet in order for the body and soul to respond properly to the therapy. Choose a spa that offers serenity, peacefulness, and comfort for that soothing feeling during and after the massage therapy session.

• Massage Therapist - prior to the scheduling of any therapeutic massage type, the client should evaluate the experience, skill and check for the license of the massage therapists working in the massage spa. This not only ensures the quality of the service, but it also reduces the risks of miscalculations and accidents during the therapy. Well trained therapists are also prepared and more cautious during the massage sessions to avoid any problems. The client should feel security, trust, and confidence while the massage therapist performs her massage techniques.

• Facility - the client should be comfortable with the massage bed or floor mat. The bar suspended from the ceiling should be properly fixed to avoid accidents. It should not detach from the ceiling during the duration of the massage therapy and should be able to fully support the weight of the massage therapist.

• Honest Evaluation - Honest opinions and evaluation should be done prior to scheduling of the massage therapy. The therapist should be concerned of the patient and should never allow patients that have conditions with contradictions to the ashiatsu therapy for their safety.

• Quality Service - you can ask for the opinions and experiences of the other clients in the massage spa that are regular customers. Their experiences can give you information whether the service is satisfying or average.

If you spot a massage spa that has passed all these lists, then its time for scheduling your massage therapy session. Make sure that you avoid heavy meals an hour before your scheduled therapy. Arriving early at the massage spa can help you get comfortable with the environment and will give you enough time to be examined before starting your massage therapy session. You can expect great relaxing results right after your therapy session.

Massage Technique - Percussion Movements or Tapotement

Description

Percussion movements (tapotement) involve a series of light, brisk, striking actions applied with alternate hands in rapid succession. Two of the main percussion strokes are cupping and hacking; they may be performed on many areas of the body, although they are especially effective when used on fleshy and large muscular areas of the body such as the thighs. Other tapotement movements include flicking, beating and pounding. When performing tapotement movements the action originates from the wrists and not from the elbows or shoulders, which remain still throughout. Many beginners make the mistake of practising percussion movements from the elbows and shoulders, resulting in frustration and clumsiness.

Cupping is performed with your palms facing downwards, forming a hollow curve. It is sometimes known as 'clapping'. As you bring your cupped hands down on to the body in quick succession, a vacuum is created which is released when you bring your hands up. The sound should be hollow like a horse trotting. Listen for the sound.

Hacking is probably the best-known massage stroke since it is the movement almost always shown in films. It is achieved with the edge of the hands (the ulnar border). Hold your hands over body with the palms facing each other, the thumbs uppermost. Flick your hands rhythmically up and down in rapid succession. Use these movements at the end a massage to wake the person up! Obviously, if you are trying to relax someone totally hacking may be omitted altogether. If you are nervous about using these movements, practise them first on a cushion or a pillow placed on your lap.

Flicking is a movement similar to hacking and is often described as 'finger hacking'. To perform this movement flex your wrists slightly and bring only the sides of your little fingers into contact with the body (not the edge of the hands as well). Flicking is a much lighter, softer movement than the usual hacking movement.

Beating and pounding movements are both applied with your hands in a closed position with your fists lightly clenched. Beating is performed with the ulnar border (little finger side) of the closed fists, whereas in pounding the palmar surface of the hands are employed. The closed fists are applied to the body in quick succession.

Benefits

  • Percussion movements are very stimulating. Tapotement is extremely useful for athletes before an event.

  • As the blood is drawn to the surface the circulation is improved.

  • Cupping is beneficial when performed over the upper and middle back area as it loosens mucus in the lungs aiding expectoration.

  • Percussion movements are also valuable in inducing muscle tone as well as strengthening muscles since they stimulate the muscle to contract.

  • They are also useful in reducing fatty deposits and flabby muscle areas and are often used over the buttocks and thighs.

  • Gentle tapotement given over the abdomen increases peristalsis, thereby aiding conditions such as constipation.

Errors to avoid

  • Make sure that when cupping, your hands are really cupped - otherwise a smacking sound will be heard, which is stinging and painful.

  • When hacking do not tense up the fingers of your hands or the movement will feel like a karate chop.

  • Keep your hands relaxed and loose and ensure that the movements are coming from the wrist. Keep your elbows tucked closely in; if you use your elbows and shoulders you will be exhausted quickly.

  • These strokes must not be performed over the bony areas they will hurt.

  • Try not to concentrate on the strokes, otherwise you may lose the rhythm.

Massage Therapy

There are a wide variety of different massage styles available, including the widely known Swedish or Classic massage style, deep muscle therapy, and trigger point therapy, all of which are used therapeutically to promote circulation in the body, loosen tired and sore muscles, and to prevent or eliminate pain.

Often the terms "massage" and "massage therapy" are used interchangeably - however, the two are in fact somewhat different services according to practitioners of massage therapy. While "massage" may be aimed solely at relaxation, massage therapy tends to be approached from a more therapeutic position, as an augmentation or in some cases replacement for more invasive medical techniques in order to deal with chronic disorders or conditions of pain. There are a growing number of hospitals now either partnering with massage therapy centers or offering massage therapy directly within the facility - some sufferers from chronic pain feel that massage therapy is far more effective than therapeutic drug therapy.

Trigger point massage is used on very specific muscle groups which are believed to transmit pain to different areas, in some cases causing a misdiagnosed medical condition, or at least causing the sufferer to believe that the problem is located in a different area than is actually the case. In this type of massage, strong pressure is applied to specific areas, with many patients reporting excellent results up to and including immediate relief of back, neck, and joint pain.

Other types of massage include hot rock massages in which warmed stones are used to apply both heat and pressure a client's musculature as a way of dissolving muscular knots, providing relaxation, and promoting circulation which is known to have a variety of physiological benefits.

Over 50 million Americans will get at least one massage this year, with many companies now encouraging their employees to make use of massage therapy services as a way of boosting morale and improving productivity. Sufferers of chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome are increasingly encouraged by doctors and physiotherapists to explore the possibilities of massage therapy as a possible alternative to expensive surgery or prescription drug use. Massage therapy is a growing field with potential benefits for many people - if you experience back pain or headaches, massage may be great way to find relief and relaxation at the same time.

Opening Your PT Clinic: How Physical Therapy Software Can Help

If you've decided to stop simply dreaming about owning your own PT clinic and are ready to do something about it, congratulations! Few careers are as rewarding as working with patients who need your help to get back on their feet, relieve their pain or improve their mobility and good health. But before you throw open the doors and start seeing patients, you'll need to consider what kind of patients you want to focus on: athletes, accident victims, those who need post-operative or occupational rehabilitation...the list is a long one. Whether you want your practice to be general or specific, make a choice and stick with it so that you can establish your reputation in that area.

Private Practice Or Clinic?

Do you want to be a sole proprietor and work for yourself, or do you want to bring on some staff members? If you're going to be hiring employees, will they be office staff or will you bring on some additional therapists? If you're concerned about handling the bookkeeping for your staff, look into physical therapy software solutions that can automatically track schedules, payroll and other employee issues. These will make your life easier and document everything for referral in the future.

Fees & Insurance

The most successful PT clinics work closely with a group of referring physicians and most health insurance providers. Before opening your doors, you'll need to decide if you want to accept most health plans as well as major medical, and what other payments you'll take. If you have physical therapy billing software in place, you'll be able to accept a variety of payments, including cash, checks and major credit cards. Simplifying payments for your clients is essential, so consider investing in physical therapy billing software that lets you set up payment plans for those who need it. Most good PT programs can also prepare and print out required insurance submission forms and minimize the problem of incorrect billing codes.

Patient Tracking And Office Organization With Physical Therapy Software

Whether you're going to be a sole practitioner or you'll bring on therapists for various specializations, the right physical therapy documentation software is a must. It protects your staff, your patients and your clinic by clearly outlining protocols, medical evaluations, course of treatment and patient progress over time. Look into a complete physical therapy software package that can set you up from day one with a flexible, customizable scheduling system that allows you or your staff to seamlessly tie appointments and procedures to copays and insurance documentation and billing. You'll get paid more reliably and your patients will appreciate quick and accurate billing of copays.

There are also PT scheduling options that can give you a great overview of individual patient progress, how often they should be scheduled for future treatment, and what their treatment modalities are. Some physical therapy documentation and software programs will even alert you when clients fall away from the schedule, prompting you to follow up with them and their physicians in order to reassess their progress and encourage their return to your clinic as needed. Prescription reminder tools can also help.

Any PT clinic, large or small, will benefit from having the right physical therapy software in place before opening its doors to patients. By having a complete suite of billing and tracking services available, you'll minimize confusion and maximize your patients' outcome and satisfaction.

Massage School - Massage Therapy Training As a Vehicle For Spiritual Awakening

As a professional training school for massage therapists, we recognize the amazing spiritual potential inherent in the body and the potency of massage therapy as an arena for the transformation of the entire being. As we progress in our exploration of working with others, we discover the inseparability of physical, emotional and spiritual healing. As we coax the muscles to soften with massage, we allow more breath, life and energy to flow through the body.

Emotions that were suppressed by the contraction of the musculature resurface and become available to consciousness for transformation. Physical relaxation can be sustained and stabilized only with the corresponding emotional integration required to tolerate increased feeling.

Massage therapists can be trained to alleviate stress, tension and physical discomfort, as well as to elicit remembrance of the pristine, untouched essence of the individual residing within the body. Students can learn to help clients remember the sacredness of who they really are, beneath the pain, tension, thoughts, emotions and changing drama of their lives.

The first aspect of a Massage Therapist's training is to acquire skill. It is essential to thoroughly master a repertoire of bodywork techniques to adeptly address a variety of situations with creative expertise and confidence. A second and equally important component of education is the commitment to self -transformation on the part the practitioner.

Knowing that it's only possible to share with others that which one has integrated within oneself, we recognize massage as an ongoing spiritual journey. The practice of massage becomes an increasingly exquisite way to reconnect with the sacred.

Our intention is to teach massage therapists to tune the subtle instrument of themselves. Students learn to become unwaveringly present, bringing the power of the infinite through their hands. They learn to love compassion, acknowledging the essential Divinity and innocence of another without denying or "taking on" their discomfort.

They develop the intuition to catapult their skills beyond the limits of technique.

They transmit with their presence an invitation to a deeper encounter with life, a trust and delight in the sacred unknowable unfoldment of each moment, gleaned from the palpable integration of their own inner work. Ultimately, they cultivate the ability to just BE with another person. Not to fix, heal, alter, advise or rescue them, but simply to be present and provide a safe space in which they can rediscover themselves.

All of these qualities are cultivatable and indispensable in the training of a professional massage therapist. If you are considering a career in bodywork or healing, be sure your training provides you with a strong holistic foundation on which to build a lifetime of fulfilling work.

Shiatsu Massage Therapy With Car Seat Massager

Massage and acupressure therapies date back to 2000 BC when these techniques were used to relieve body pain. However, with the emergence of medical science and technology, these therapies were neglected for a prolonged period of time. In today's society, most doctors are in favor of massage therapy and are recommending a combination of massage therapy with medication to combat illness.

Shiatsu massage originates from Japan. This type of massage uses the palm, fingers, and thumb to stimulate the acupuncture points on the body. This stimulation leads to the secretion of internal body chemicals that can relieve body ache and pains and helps the body to relax and gain energy.

Back pain is a major burden because it limits your daily activities. If driving a car becomes an extremely painful experience due to nagging back pain, there are car seat massagers available on the market that will help reduce or manage your back pain.

The Car Seat Massager simulates a Shiatsu massage, which means the massager provides rotating massage action and intermittent pressure on your back to relieve pain and fatigue on your back

Pain may be experienced in the upper and lower back due to heavy lifting, bad posture, or sudden strain. A Car Seat Massager has small rollers that can massage the whole back. The roller can help reduce pain in the lower back muscles and soft tissue between the cervical disks.

Many chairs also provide heat therapy which is very effective in pain reduction. Look for all these elements when you decide to buy a Car Seat Massager.

Massage Therapy Career - Pay Scale

The pay scale of the massage therapy career depends on a lot of variables. Some of these variables include the type of practice massage therapists do and the location of their practice. In addition, the kinds of techniques used for the massage as also as the skills used are different for different therapists hence leading to the difference in income. Experience also plays an important role in determining the salary in a massage therapy career.

If a massage therapist owns a massage facility then that usually leads to a higher income as compared to other therapists who work for hourly rates. Owning a facility even increases responsibilities. You have to maintain the building and also the client list.

You can also opt to be an independent therapist. In this case you will work in a clinic. The fees are then split on the basis of percentage in order to pay for the provided services like equipment, supplies, receptionist and working space.

Salary varies on the place as well. In cities, charge will be higher as compared to rural areas. So while a massage therapy career in a city can earn you between $60 and $70 every hour, a practice in a rural set up will earn you no more than $35- $50.

In some ways, owning a private massage facility might be better because such therapists earn higher than those who earn hourly. But the second group of therapists does not have to pay for the extra expenses like building and they also do not have the problem of having to maintain clients.

A massage takes a lot from you emotionally and physically. So it is not possible for massage therapists to work for 35 hours every week. But even this capacity will vary from therapist to therapist. But maximum number of professionals practice not more than 15 hours in a week.

This profession is different from the usual corporate professions. It is not possible to aim for promotions and larger salaries in a linear manner. But it is possible to advance even in this field. To do this, a professional will have to do advanced courses on massage therapy and become more specialized. This will not only help increase her fees, it will also bring her a wide range of clientele.

To be a successful massage therapist, it might take somewhere between six and twelve months. During this period a lot of persistence and dedication is needed to be successful in the business. Good entrepreneurial skills are central to developing a successful business.

A Physical Therapy Program Can Help Educate Aspiring Physical Therapists

There comes a time when you're contemplating your college degree and you've got to look towards the future. After all, you're not going to be a student forever. Usually, the intention of getting a degree is to move you forward into a professional setting, where you can work at a job you love doing something you enjoy.

Ideally, you'll be able to take some time and brainstorm about what it is you want to do after you graduate long before you're even thinking about putting on a mortarboard. If you have a job in mind, you'll be able to pick a degree that closely resembles your future profession. Even better is the fact that you'll be able to take classes that will help expand the knowledge you'll need for your future.

Nowadays, many students are interested in professions involving the healthcare professions. However, not every student wants to become a doctor or a nurse. Fortunately, there are plenty of careers available to students who want to help others, but aren't looking to donning a white jacket to do so. One of the jobs that is rising in popularity is that of a physical therapist.

These types of therapists are healthcare professionals who work with people of all ages who are suffering from medical problems or other limiting, health-related injuries or illnesses. Usually these illnesses prevent patients from fully moving or performing activities as functionally as they would like to on a daily basis. They also work with patients to prevent the loss of mobility before it happens by promoting healthier lifestyles and habits.

Those who enter this field practice in a variety of locations, from hospitals to outpatient clinics to private offices. Most full-time therapists do work a 40-hour workweek, often including evenings and weekends to accommodate their patients' needs. Being a physical therapist does require physical strength - these professionals may have to stoop, kneel, crouch and stand for long periods while working. Sometimes they also move heavy equipment or help patients turn or walk.

Practicing physical therapy does require some time spent in school, as well as the applicable licensure required in the state where you choose to practice. The American Physical Therapy Association's accrediting body accredits entry-level academic programs specifically focused on this specialty. These programs include 12 master's degree programs and 200 doctorate programs. You will need to complete an undergraduate degree before you can move on to the graduate therapy programs.

Job employment for physical therapists is expected to grow by 30 percent within the next seven years, which is faster than average for all occupations. In 2008, those in this field held about 185,500 jobs, and as patient access to the services of physical therapists increase, so do jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for physical therapists were $72, 790 as of 2008.

The Ling Legacy - Swedish Massage Techniques

Swedish massage has been with us since the 18th century. Dr. Per Henrik Ling is regarded as the father of Swedish massage. The techniques he pioneered are still at the root of the practice today and serve as a wonderful way to relax while increasing oxygen flow within the bloodstream and releasing toxins from one's muscles.

This form of massage has survived for centuries because it works and because it's a very physically enjoyable experience for the recipient. If you've ever luxuriated in the pleasure of a Swedish massage and then basked in the afterglow of its consequences, you'll understand why Ling's legacy continues to be so extremely popular.

Swedish massage works (and feels so good) because it's much more than a simple rubdown. Practitioners utilize a number of specific techniques to produce an incomparable massage experience. Let's look at the six techniques that make up this long-lived massage sequence.

Effleurage. The massage begins with a serious of light strokes delivered via the fingertips, thumbs and palms of the masseuse. From the recipient's perspective, this serves as an introduction to the process, a warm-up that induces relaxation.

Petrissage. At this point, the massage increases in vigor. The gliding movements that marked the effleurage stage are replaced by a more intense kneading of the area being massaged.

Friction. The masseuse transitions from the strong kneading of petrissage to the application of circular pressure primarily utilizing the palms.

Vibration. During this stage of Swedish massage, the masseuse applies movements that quickly vibrate the body.

Percussion. At this point, the stroking and rubbing usually associated with massage are replaced by tapping and chopping movements. This portion of the sequence is the one most frequently associated with Swedish massage. When people think of the practice, they often conjure up mental images of a masseuse delivering a rapid series of "karate chop"-like hacks to the recipient's back. That the percussive portion of the massage.

Movement. The massage concludes with stretching and bending, facilitated by the practitioner.

Every true Swedish massage moves through this same six-step process. The combination of activities produces a unique overall experience that produces some wonderful results.

When one considers the information with which Dr. Ling had to work during the 1700s, the fact that he created a foundation for a form of massage that generates such positive results is nothing short of amazing. Whether he was a true genius visionary or just happened to accidentally stumble upon an approach that works, there's no doubt that he created something special.

Today we understand the body better than ever before. We've mapped our genetic codes, have equipment available to show us exactly what's happening within us, utilize amazing tests that can show even the slightest irregularities and continue to enjoy the benefits of new technologies designed to keep up healthier and to improve the quality of our lives. Still, there's room for a simple six-step massage that's continued through the centuries. Swedish massage is a perfect example of how some of the older strategies for improved well-being remain worthy of consideration, support and use

Physiotherapy - Good Or Bad Career Choice?

I've been a physiotherapist for 6 years in Australia. In Australia, physiotherapy is very difficult to get into through a university. For instance, the TER score (score after you finish your high school certificate) was 93 in 2000. That was the third highest score to apply for through university. Now, you may think that the higher the difficulty to apply, the higher the prestige, income and satisfaction the job will be. You think so right? Wrong!

Let me tell you, physiotherapy or physical therapist as a career choice is not what you think. I came to think when doing the course I expect a high income and high levels of satisfaction, but from my experience and others this is totally wrong. I have friends who have been doing physiotherapy for more than 5 years who have changed careers because they thought physiotherapy will get them nowhere. I've been told by one of the board members of the physiotherapy association that there is no physiotherapist working full time in a private practice above 45. So it seems many physiotherapists are not satisfied with their career.

So why is it that many physiotherapists aren't satisfied with their careers? I can give you three good reasons.

First is the income. Our income is around $60-70k year on average, but the ceiling for physiotherapist to get is around $100-110k a year (which is rare) if working for someone or in the public sector. Now in the private sector (working in your own practice) you can make considerably more, about $100k or greater. But setting up and working in the private sector cost money and it is very expensive. You have to pay rent, equipment, labor and many other expenses. So in the end, you might not make much because of all the expenses.

Second is the level of satisfaction. You may think helping people get better makes you happier, it does. But there are many more people who don't get better. Also, the job that you do in physiotherapy is very monotonous it's either doing assessment, electrotherapy, exercises or hands on work (which I basically call massage). People who work as a physiotherapist will most likely have hand, wrist or back pain because the job requires you to do repetitive movements or awkward postures most of the time. For instance bending down to treat a patient on a bed,

Third is security. If you do extra courses or have masters degree to specialize in physiotherapy, most likely that won't guarantee you extra income or status. There is a lack of differentiation between an experienced physiotherapist or an inexperienced physiotherapist in terms of pay. Also, the future of physiotherapy as a profession is overtaken by other health professionals such as chiropractors and even nurses.

This is due to incompetence of the physiotherapy board and association of pushing our status in government and general public opinion into insignificance. It seems that the physiotherapy association has no lobbyist in the government or insurance industry thereby cutting our status as a health professional. For instance, insurances are cutting physiotherapist rates and services (for example HBA in the UK) as they see physiotherapy as not important. In the long term, physiotherapy as a profession will die out and overtaken by other health professionals.

So is physiotherapy a good or bad career choice? I say most definitely not a good career choice. But this is my opinion. If you want to get another person's opinion, see your physiotherapist or a person who is working in your career.

Physical Therapy - Tracking Down Its History

Physical therapy is noted in history since ancient times. But, irrespective of the period, the main goals of physiotherapy have always remained the same- to restore the rehabilitation and mobility of the patient.

Physical therapy's first documented account is from the old master of medicines- Hippocrates. In the year 460 BC, Hippocrates introduced the idea of manual manipulation like hydrotherapy and massage for pain relief. From early time the advantages of such activities was understood and this understanding continues till date. But it wasn't until the nineteenth century that a cohesive group of physical therapy practitioners was formed. In England, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy established itself followed by other similar organizations dedicated to providing the best care to people who required it. Physical therapy in the United States is the same as physiotherapy in other countries. Irrespective of what term is used, the idea, procedure and practice are all the same.

While World War-I was going on, people trained in providing physical therapy (also called reconstruction aid), helped wounded and injured soldiers relieve their pain. but it wasn't till the year 1921 that first physical therapist organized group came into being. It was formed by the famous Mary Mcmillan, and was called the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association. Soon, the group turned into he American Physical Therapy Association which included even men. The name change brought about a curriculum change and physical therapists had to meet a different set of requirements. This occupation gained more professionalism and formality and the medical community began to recognize it as a viable treatment for pain and injury.

Another landmark in the history of physiotherapy was during the breakout of the polio epidemic. These physiotherapists did groundbreaking work in the rehabilitation and treatment of the polio patients. Although the primary procedures include massage and exercise during the time, physical therapy benefited the polio patients to a large extent. The focus on joints and use of manipulation started gaining popularity in the 1950's.

The first example of specialized practice by a group of physiotherapists happened in the 70's with the orthopedic practice being formed by the Association of American Physical Therapy. The history of physiotherapy has grown and changed a lot over time. By now therapists had begun practicing in different places including nursing homes, outpatient clinics and hospitals, where most modern day specialists practice today.

After the 80's, with the invention of the computer and different technologies, many advances were made in the field of physical therapy. Electric stimulators and ultra sounds became common technologies used in the medical field. New technologies dramatically changed the face of physical therapy and now therapists were able to use far more advanced machines and tools to help their patients.

The history behind physical therapy has grown and evolved a lot over the years and its evolution is an ongoing process. With each new innovation, technique and procedure, the capability of the craft that therapists use to treat t heir patients keeps getting better. Physical therapy has come a long way since its beginning and with a lot of success.

How to Get the Most Out of Massage School

Massage school will teach you how to do massage. It doesn't really teach you about becoming a successful massage therapist. You can learn how to get the most out of massage school and get through training easily when you know a few things about the massage profession.

The number of schools has been increasing for the most part until recently (2007). What this means to a massage student is that teachers are in low supply. Most teachers are right out of massage school themselves and may not have any teaching experience or any real work or massage business experience. There are also many very talented massage school teachers.

To get the most out of your training and education it is important to stay out of the drama and focus on learning and your studies. Get as many massages as you can. Work on as many clients as you can. If you find the classes and teaching to be less than you needed or find it to be overwhelming get the support you need. You can form a study group with other students or find a mentor to help you get through.

Find one of the really good massage teachers to help you. Have them work on you doing massage and work on them as often as you can to get more accurate feedback.

Part of the problem is that massage school requires that you yourself get massage. Massage can bring up many emotional issues that are often buried in your unconscious mind. Combine that with learning new things like anatomy and physiology as well as the massage itself and a massage student can easily become overwhelmed. Others will be in the same boat so don't worry.

The first thing you will learn as a successful massage therapist is how to take care of yourself first. You can start doing that right off the bat as a massage school student and just stay focused on your studies.

How Much Does Massage Therapy School Cost?

If you are thinking about becoming a massage therapist, you are probably wondering "how much does massage therapy school cost?" This is a reasonable question to ask considering the cost of higher education these days. The costs can vary, as do the lengths of the programs and the degree or certificate acquired, but the information below should help create a financial plan for massage therapy school.

Tuition

The tuition costs for an average massage therapy school range from $6 to $17 per hour. Some programs are shorter, especially in states where there are no licensing requirements, so you could theoretically pay as little as $1,000. It is more likely to expect to pay as much as $10,000 for a comprehensive program that provides a massage table, though.

Financial Aid

Fortunately, there is financial aid available for massage therapy school students. Loans and grants are available from the federal government as well as from the schools themselves. There are financial aid specialists at most schools that can help you plan a course of action to pay for your education there.

Financing Options

. Federal Student Aid
. No-Interest Payment Plans
. Veterans Assistance
. Private Loan Financing

By filling out a FAFSA you can see which types of financial aid you qualify for from the federal government. No interest payment plans might be available from the schools, and private loans are often available from banks and other financial institutions. And if you are a veteran, you should qualify for various veterans' assistance programs. Most of these financial aid options require that you are going to an accredited massage therapy school or program, though, so you will need to look into that before applying.

It may seem like a lot of information and a lot of money, but by simply visiting the school or schools of your choice and speaking with a financial aid expert, you can get through the process painlessly and get into a good program in no time. Then you will be well on your way to a rewarding career that is high in demand and has a great job outlook.

Creative Ideas For Family Christmas Gifts

Christmas is coming and many are looking for great gift ideas. You don't want to give just "anything" to your family this year...do you? We didn't think so! Try these fun and creative gift ideas for great Christmas gifts they'll be talking about all year. Your only problem? Coming up with something even better for next year!

Sending Mom to a spa for a massage or a facial can be pricey. A great bargain hunter's secret is to search for a massage school in your area to see if their graduate (or final year) students give massages. Often they do and at a discounted rate! This is a great way to give Mom the luxurious spa treatment without that expensive price tag.

Most people have enough "things." What they are really missing are things that intrigue them and teach them something they can enjoy and have fun with. For many family members consider giving the gift of a gift certificate for a class. There are many types of classes that aren't too expensive, try Continuing Education at your local college or high school for a wide variety of courses. Or the local craft or knitting store for crafts classes. A class can introduce them to a new hobby or activity - or help them deepen an interest they already have.

Plan a fun activity for the entire family to celebrate Christmas - instead of giving an "ordinary" gift. Try getting tickets to live theater or a dance performance. There are many Christmas themed performances available that are fun for families or couples. The Nutcracker is one of the most popular but there are many others.

Want to romance your husband or wife? Try getting them dance lessons to remind them of your courting days. Spend a few weeks learning to salsa or do the fox trot and you'll have so much fun it will be like going on your first date. Dance lessons can be private or group lessons, many dance programs have parties for their members.

Becoming a Massage Therapist

Massage therapy is a career field that is growing rapidly in recent years. If you take the time to think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Times have never been tougher; people are experiencing more stress than ever, so it only makes sense that a massage every now and again can make an intolerable situation a bit easier to take. However, in order to become a massage therapist, the proper route must be followed.

Students generally have two routes they can go in securing their training in this field. They can choose to attend one of the many massage therapy schools available, or they can attend some of the major beauty academies, as they will also offer this training. It really comes down to a matter of preference, tuition, and location. Take the time to research the different institutions available and pick the one that best fits all of your needs and resources.

While training, many students are offered the opportunity to practice their trade and get direct feedback from clients. They will also have direct supervision from supervisors to help improve their technique. This is an important factor to consider, as a masseur must be comfortable dealing with perfect strangers in a setting that can be awkward for some.

Upon graduation, the decision must be made to work for a spa, hospital or health care center, or perhaps start your own business. Spa's and health care facilities will offer the luxury of a guaranteed salary and benefits. However, many people go into this field because they do not want to work the typical 9-5 job. For those individuals, having their own business is probably the best option.

Opening up your own shop also presents a couple of options. Do you want to establish a storefront business or travel to the clients? For a new business owner, traveling from home to home is a very attractive option. Overhead is kept very low, as there is no rent or staff to pay. This is something to consider as having a storefront could put the business in the hole for thousands of dollars before a single massage is booked.

Traveling from home to home also makes it more convenient for the client. Think about this...would you really want to have to worry about getting dressed, get back into the car, and then drive home after an hour and a half massage? Clients will love the fact they are able to remain relaxed and allow the therapy to sink in. Once word gets out about the quality and convenience offered, expect that appointment book to be loaded with new clients.

Learn at Home Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a wonderful art that uses both hand works and scientific methods in improving the condition of the human body to achieve a healthy mind and body. This method of natural healing is done by licensed massage therapists who are trained and skilled in performing various massage strokes and techniques without injuring the patient.

There are many ways on how to become a licensed massage therapist although learning the art is the first thing to consider if you are planning on becoming one. There are many options when it comes to learning the trade. Studying at a massage school is probably the best thing to do if you want a complete and updated course on massage therapy. Interaction is also a great addition to the wonderful experience and knowledge you will attain from having your lessons at school. However, if you don't have the time to go to school or you just don't want to learn it at school, you can search for online accredited massage schools that offers such course in the internet. Make sure that the online school you are enrolling is accredited and has good standards in massage therapy.

It is also a good idea to contact your state's board of massage and bodywork therapy for you to have information regarding what are the requirements and needed to be learned in order to be a licensed massage therapist. You can either see them personally at their office or drop a call for your inquiries. Make sure that you ask all of the necessary questions and information you need as you will be studying and practicing massage therapy for a long time that is why it is important to know that what you are getting into is the real deal.

When you have your online school, check out which massage therapy methods you would like to take and specialize. Always remember that this course takes about two to four years time before you can actually complete it, which is why choosing what you really want is important. It is also vital that the massage therapy program you have chosen includes kinesiology, anatomy and physiology in its course as these are basically covered in the licensure exam of massage therapists.

You can also purchase books regarding your chosen massage therapy method as these materials have contents that are not available online. These can also be handy as they can be used as quick reference and can be taken with you anywhere you want to go.

Practice is the key to success in learning massage therapy at homes. Unlike when taking the course in school where the school provides an instructor and a test subject, home school requires you to do it on your own which means you will have to pay for a test subject. However, you don't need to do that as you can always practice with your family or friends. Before you can take the licensure exam, a minimum of 1,000 hours should be completed in order to pass the requirements and become a certified massage therapist.

Does Physical Therapy For Frozen Shoulder Work?

Most doctors will only attempt to treat the symptoms of frozen shoulder. To do this, they many try any number of different treatments, such as acupuncture or injections. Frozen shoulder symptoms, such as pain and stiffness, can usually be reduced or sometimes alleviated all together with the right combination of treatments.

Of the treatments available, physical therapy for frozen shoulder is the one that is most argued about. The effectiveness of the physical therapy is the question. Frozen shoulder, by nature, will heal itself with time and many physicians feel that they simply do not wish to expose their patient to any more pain and suffering than they are probably already going through.

Many, however, still believe that some amount of physical therapy for frozen shoulder can be beneficial if done at the right time in the progress of the condition. This physical therapy is aimed at relieving both pain and stiffness and will typically consist of both massage and stretching exercises. The massage part of the physical therapy may be a two step process that consists of either a manual massage or a manual manipulation (chiropractic), and a deep heat massage, usually done through ultrasound.

Physical therapy is done to stretch the muscles in the shoulder joint; however, most physicians will recommend that no exercises be done unless under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist. Because of the sticky nature of the condition, it is very easy to damage the joint further by overexerting or incorrectly performing an exercise.

Whatever the case, a patient should always remember that physical therapy for frozen shoulder can help to relieve the pain and stiffness, but it will probably only be effective if done during the first or last stage of the condition. There are three stages to frozen shoulder. The first stage is called the freezing stage. At this point, the stiffness is just starting to set in and there is still some sort of mobility in the joint.

The last stage is similar, except that the patient will gradually begin to realize a return in their range of motion. Either of these stages will benefit by some daily stretching exercises and massage to relieve the inflammation. During the frozen stage, the physical therapy will most likely be very limited in its effectiveness and will cause the patient unnecessary pain.

Which Schools of Massage Therapy Best Suit You?

Which would be the best place to work as massage therapist? It would be Hawaii. Being always known as a hot tourist destination makes Hawaii's massage therapy industry a requirement to making it a top tourist attraction to relax and unwind. And massage therapy always makes tourist relax and unwind. What would be a nice state to study massage therapy?

Again I say Hawaii. Hawaii's schools of massage have the advantage of having its Massage therapy industry booming making their faculty into top rate practicing professionals. Who better to teach the course than teachers who are both knowledgeable in theory and practice. Hawaii is also an accredited state making students who get their license instantly be nationally and internationally accredited. Giving the new licensed graduates more options to look for work. And of course, come on it's Hawaii, coming to school here would be like having a vacation without having to travel that far.

That's just an awesome reason to come study in Hawaii. So what would be the best school of massage that would suit you? This time the answer won't be Hawaii. Seriously though the answer would be to get into a massage school that offers you a general overview of all massage therapy styles and also teaching you the basic of all these styles. As you know there are a lot of massage therapy styles. A recently published article has even cited 80 styles. That's just too much to handle so it is important we begin with an overview and introduction to the basics.

Basic courses in massage schools would offer such massage therapy courses like massage tech, anatomy & physiology, shiatsu, lomi, jorei, hydrotherapy, assessment, reflexology, chair massage and aromatherapy. There are also basic courses for pre-natal, orthopedic massage, business tactics, ortho bionomy, neuro muscular therapy, treatment & pathology and clinical practice.

Then if you have taken up all the required basic courses, it is up to you to proceed to study in the specialization of a particular style of massage therapy or not. Which I would advise that you do. So that's it for now and I do hope you take my advice and study in a great school of massage in Hawaii. And if your parents wouldn't believe you that you really are going to study in Hawaii then let them read this article. They may even be convinced to come study with you. Is that a good thing or bad thing? Good luck, then. Aloha.

Massage Therapists: Be Your Own Body's Best Advocate

As a bodyworker, the most important title you have isn't CMT (Certified Massage Therapist) ~ it's "YOBBA" ~ Your Own Body's Best Advocate. Working as a bodyworker, the very essence of your job is to be an advocate for the health and well-being for other people's bodies. Your hands and your touch are literally advocates for your clients' bodies. In the process of doing your job, especially if you work in a resort setting, you are bombarded with exotic bugs from all over the world all through what is usually your busiest, and of course, most profitable part of your year ~ "High Season." Survival instinct and your boss urging you to work through it may be difficult to fight, but in my experience, the best thing you can do for yourself and your future is to be your own body's best advocate and stay in bed and drink plenty of fluids. There's a reason that that's the conventional wisdom ~ because it works.

There's nothing better than a new year. You get a fresh slate, a blank page on which to write your story ~ one that may not have gone as you'd planned the year before. I like a new year and I'm thankful that every twelve months we get an automatic re-do. For most of my life, the end of the year has usually meant some type of cold or flu, ruining the holidays or at least making them more stressful. Thankfully, though, by the time the new year comes around the annual cold or flu is a faint memory. For the last eight years or so I've been quite fortunate in that I've been spared from any type of plague, annual or otherwise. This new year, I'm afraid I've not been so lucky.

For two weeks now I have been battling an unfortunate case of influenza that morphed into bronchitis and is now an annoying, lingering cold. It's amazing to me how much snot a body can make in the process of an upper respiratory infection ~ I think I'm on my seventh or eighth box of tissue. For probably two or three weeks prior to that, I struggled with "something" trying to land on me. Tired of the just-on-the-edge feeling, I finally said out loud, "If you're going to get me, then just get me!" Naturally, as soon as I gave the flu permission to invade my body, it did ~ the very next day. I know better than to give my brain permission to let my body get sick. I'm thinking that's the last time I'm going to do that. Next time I'm going to say, "I'M NOT SICK!!"

As I've been battling this super bug ~ the first I've had in a very long time ~ I've been reminded of a very dark time in my bodywork career when I failed to do what was right for my body and allowed myself to succumb to pressure from my workplace and my bank account. I failed to advocate for my own health and I paid a steep price for my negligence.

Approximately eight years ago, I came home with a horrible bug I may have picked up during a weekend workshop in Arizona, or that I'd been exposed to before I went. Nonetheless, under extreme pressure to work as soon as I could and longer than I should in my busy spa, that bug soon turned into walking pneumonia and then horribly and inexplicably turned into a medical nightmare that nearly killed me in the process. I also ended up having to leave a job I loved, and lost all of my savings because I was unable to work full-time for nearly a year. I won't go into detail about my medical nightmare because it's a long story that needs to be told completely in order for the entire process to make sense. Long story, short, I'll just say that due to a combination of overwork, stress, and careless and arrogant doctors, I miraculously lived through something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

It's important that massage therapists and bodyworkers be their own bodies' best advocates for the health of their bodies. Whether it's saving your thumbs or hands, your elbows, your shoulders, your back or just staying in bed when you have a cold or flu, you are the best advocate your body has. No one else is going to care to protect your body more than you do. Too many spas or massage establishments, unfortunately, care about one thing and one thing only ~ their bottom line. They will push a therapist as hard as they're allowed ~ by the therapist ~ to produce, often far beyond what a therapist's body is capable.

In my case, not only did I have pressure from my spa to come to work before I should have and work on too many bodies each day, but I put pressure on myself as well. I was extremely fortunate to work in a situation where I made a lot of money ~ I mean a lot of money that all therapists dream of making ~ and worried that if I dared to take a few days off to get well I would lose too much money that week. So I and my spa contributed to my ultimate demise. By putting a week's pay and my spa's needs first, I lost far more than a week's pay. I lost nearly a full year of full-time work because my body was too weak to handle more than one or two sessions a day ~ a few times a week. I also calculated that combined with my lost savings and lost work, that week's pay I was so worried about cost me about $65,000 that year! What a lesson I learned, right? My own body's best advocate put her bottom line first.

It's very difficult for me to write about this experience in my life because it's a disturbing reminder of how a stupid and short-sighted decision on my part jeopardized my health and my livelihood. But it's important for me to remember and share with others as an example of what not to do when faced with a decision regarding your health and your body's well-being.

As I mentioned earlier, as a bodyworker, you're going to come into intimate contact with exotic bugs carried into your massage room by your clients. Sometimes they may just be unaware carriers, but too often they're sick themselves, selfishly putting their own comfort ahead of their therapist's health. In obvious situations you have the option of wearing a protective mask, or if your client is glassy-eyed and running a fever you have an obligation to them and yourself to cancel the session. I've worked through many sessions using a protective mask, telling my clients I cannot afford to get what they have. When I've suffered through allergy season I've also worn a mask even though I knew I wasn't contagious because I wanted my clients to know I cared about their health and well-being. It's possible to advocate for others' health while still being your own advocate.

When I was a new therapist, just starting out, I worked for an upscale hotel spa during the SARS scare. A group from Toronto came through and one of my guests had an obvious cold and a cough. I panicked because we didn't have masks available and I was afraid to cancel the session because I didn't want to lose my job. It was a very stressful session for me, not to mention the following weeks as I waited for SARS to strike me dead. That is an example of a spa putting their sick guest ahead of their therapist ~ and of a therapist putting something/anything ahead of their own body's safety. As I mentioned, I was a fairly new therapist and worried more about my job than my own body. I didn't fully understand my responsibility and obligation I had as an advocate to myself to protect my own health.

As I continue to battle my new year bug, I hope that by sharing my past experience I can make an impact on other bodyworkers and how they view their role as advocates for their own bodies. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for you to be your own body's best advocate. No one has a bigger stake in protecting your health and well-being than you, except, of course your family. If you're too sick to work, don't. If you're injured, don't work injured. Remember, the decisions you make today don't just affect tomorrow. If you are your own body's best and most insistent advocate, you can practically guarantee health and longevity in a tough but rewarding career where you can also continue to advocate for your clients' health and well-being.

Massage Schools Attract Nurses Wishing To Be More Active In Individual Care

It is becoming more common to see professional credentials that include the designations "RN, CMT." Apparently, many members of the nursing profession have taken the initiative to receive formal massage training and become certified as massage therapists. I spend a good deal of time participating in nursing forum discussions and I have noticed a marked increase in the number of discussions focused on massage therapy as an additional discipline for nurses.

So what would prompt a registered nurse, that is in such demand that he or she could nearly name their own salary, take on the additional challenge of attending massage school? An informal analysis of a variety of comments by nurses interested in massage reveals a good deal about both professions.

Nurses today face a variety of issues. Due to the chronic shortage of nurses, qualified RNs are aggressively recruited and well compensated. But the same shortage has resulted in working conditions that are quite demanding and very stressful. The ratio of patients to nurses keeps getting larger and the required overtime can be profitable but exhausting. As a result, many nurses experience burnout and leave the profession.

Other nurses express frustration with the inability to provide the level of care to seriously ill patients that they feel qualified to provide. Many doctors have little respect for the contribution of nurses and this dismissive attitude towards the primary caregiver in a hospital environment angers and demoralizes many nurses who know they are capable of providing a level of care the will significantly impact the health of individual patients.

While some nurses opt to become nurse practitioners to allow for more active involvement in patient care, others prefer a more hands-on approach. Elise Sorenson, formerly an R.N. at a busy Midwest medical center, is now operating her own massage therapy practice. "I loved being a nurse," says Elise as she prepares for a day of appointments with a growing list of clients. "But it got to the point where I was just treating patients, not people. There was no time to really get involved with individuals and feel like I was making a contribution."

Elise had been receiving massages from a qualified therapist on a regular basis for almost 2 years before she began giving serious thought to becoming a therapist herself. "I had always found massage to be very helpful with stress reduction but I also felt that it addressed both specific physical conditions and overall health. The more I investigated massage as a profession the more convinced I became that it was something I really wanted to do."

Elise received her certification after completing her training at an accredited massage school. "It was a slow go at first but I really believe that my experience as a nurse along with my massage training helped me provide a unique level of insight into both diagnosis and treatment. I have had more than one client mention that the 'R.N.' after my name gave them an increased level of confidence in my abilities."

While some nurses make a decision to leave the healthcare industry altogether, others are finding methods, like becoming a massage therapist, to make a more satisfying contribution to the health and well being of others.

What Are the Massage Therapist Requirements For Schools of Massage?

Due to its being a widely favored approach to health, massage therapy in has been one of the rapidly growing option in the health care industry. Massage clinics are not the only institutions that are benefiting from this growth. Many individuals have decided to take up a career in massage therapy as well, seeing that it is, in itself, a lucrative career. For this reason, massage schools are likewise mushrooming all over the world in an answer to the strong demand for licensed massage therapists. Working Hours

Massage therapists have a required number of hours of education. Here in the state of Hawaii, the average required number five hundred seventy hours, plus a state-commissioned written exam. Massage schools give a specific number of credited hours per course, so you may want to check first which one gives you more hours for less cost.

Good Massage School

While this one is not an official requirement, getting a good massage school is a practical move. For one looking to have a lasting and credible career in massage therapy, you need to look out for yourself, as a massage therapy service provider. The foundation of every good business, afterall, is based on the quality of service you can give to your target market. The world of massage therapy is no exception. So, while being on the look out for massage schools, read reviews and feedbacks for each one. Pick out the school where you can save money, without sacrificing quality.

Brush Up on Your Sciences

Again, this is not an official massage therapist requirement. But refreshing or revisiting your science background will give you a head start when you go to massage schools. As you know, there are some massage schools that require their students to have some Anatomy or Physiology background. This is perfectly understandable since health matters are no joke.

Bring That Smile

Hawaii is an island famous for its laidback and friendly atmosphere. There is no doubt why tourists and even the locals themselves prefer massage therapy in Hawaii. There is a certain quality of serenity and relaxation inherent to the island that makes it a prime option for leisure and relaxation. It would serve you best to adapt and harness an attitude that mirrors the island that is Hawaii. While on the lookout for massage schools, browse through communication/listening workshops or classes and work on those people skills. Such a little thing like this could go a long way for you.
